A Note From Yamaha - 2018 SV Infotainment System

Got this in my inbox today. Rather than trying to copy/paste the whole thing, here's the link to "view email in web page":

Star Venture Infotainment Update and FAQs

Key quotes in my opinion:

  • Software updates for the infotainment system will be available again shortly as direct downloads from our website, found at: Infotainment System Update.
  • Did you know that Yamaha has a dedicated Customer Service number staffed to answer questions and concerns related to Star Venture and Star Eluder? This number is (800) 656-7695, with Yamaha specialists available Monday through Friday, from 5:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
  • Finally, to ensure we are providing you with the tools you need to keep your Star Eluder up to date, we will be sending you a small care package in the near future containing a USB flash drive selected for maximum compatibility with your Yamaha Touring infotainment system. This USB flash drive will make it easier to update your infotainment system without having to source your own formatted USB flash drive.

I just got that same email a little while ago. My bike came with an 8mb stick already formatted.

I doubt that 8mb thumb drive is what they are sending as 8 mb is nothing these days and updates are likely to be up to a gigabyte in size as according to the manual updates may take as long as 45 minutes and have the bike on a charger so you don't run the battery down during the update, or they say have the bike running, not sure I want to let it idle for up to 45 minutes and third they say take it to a dealer for the the update.

I hope the notify me, I have not received any emails from Yamaha on this. I wonder how they know who bought each bike are they getting the information from each selling dealer?

I signed up for the whole "My Yamaha" thing, and when you create your profile you specify which bike you own. I thought there would be folks here who bought the bike but didn't sign up, which is why I decided to share the email.

For those of us who have not can you tell us where this site is so we can register? Is it on the Yamaha home page?

I downloaded the Yamaha ToolBox but I did not know of another place I could sign up for more.

When I did the R12.0.5 update in January, It only took about 5 minutes to load up. Don’t know why they say 45?

The statement was, "may take up to 45 minutes". Probably a hedge. My update took about 10 minutes.

I had seen that email and quickly read through it. Thanks for posting this because I foolishly had deleted it and then this week I experienced the "Navigation not ready" /.

error. I too saw an email regarding Yamaha sending out thumb drives, I have not received one. I am curious though. the video to correct this error mentioned that the error had been remedied in software version 12. the Yamaha toolbox downloaded and update of some sort but when I performed the "fix" the software version on my bike still shows version 11.8.9. I tried to select software update with the thumb drive plugged in, the selection was not greyed out but did nothing?

The toolbox utility is just for navigation updates (i.e., maps), not updates to the entire infotainment system. You can download that update and find a walk-through on how to apply it here:

Good evening, I followed the software update instructions and the screen did reach the "Completed" screen. I have a new issue. the GPS thinks I'm in San Antonio TX. I am in South Georgia. It is frozen in San Antonio on the same location. Anyone else experience this?

I have a question about the Nav setup . . . I just purchased the SVTC . . . yesterday . . . and I'm trying the instructions on the nav set up since the dealer didn't do it and I'm not seeing where I need to format the thumb drive a certain format. is that info somewhere on here that I missed?

Thanks

Congrats on your new bike! Once you get a few things ironed out, you’re gonna LOVE it!

Yamaha recently sent everyone a formatted 8GB unit to use with all updates. As far as formatting goes, I think Yamaha’s site has some info on that. I have my own 8GB thumb drive that my dealership gave me at purchase. I’m not super savvy on this stuff but I think you need to keep your drive to 8 or 16GB just because it works better and I think the bigger ones are differently formatted which creates an issue.

Let me ask if you’ve ordered your Service Manual for the bike? HIGHLY recommended! Both your owners manual & the service manual have detailed instructions on performing software updates. Sad to hear that the dealership didn’t do that as part of delivery prep BEFORE giving you the bike. I’m hearing way too many stories like that but it makes me appreciate my dealership ALL the more! Thank ChiefGunner . . . I have yet to order the service manual, I plan on doing that asap. I have been more concerned with getting the loan/paperwork/etc out of the way to be able to pick up the bike that I still need to do that. Tomorrow is going to be the last good riding day in Ohio, so I get to put it away for the winter . . . so i'll have time to get it and then get the software squared away. Thanks again for the response.

I would be demanding that the dealership deliver the bike in PROPER working order. All of the software updates DONE up to the current one. The NAV system registered and WORKING. This is all part of “dealer prep” that THEY CHARGE YOU FOR. I’d MAKE them do it!

On another note, even if your baby sits in the garage for a while, this is a good opportunity for you to sit on it with the manual and familiarize yourself with all the functions. Get all your settings for infotainment where you want them and get your home screens setup with the info you want displayed. Then learn how to use the handlebar controls to access what you want without having to study the screen. It’ll make changing stuff while your riding much easier & safer.

Theres a LOT to learn. As you’ve probably already noticed, the manual for the Infotainment System is 118 pages!

Advice, read it then RE-READ it again, then go play with controls then RE-READ it again!
