I had my 1st service done a few hundred miles ago. we went up to PA. over the weekend. About half way up there i started hearing what sounded like a whining gear grinding sound. It only seems to happen in 5th gear, when throttle on but not under a load (like pulling a hill). when coming down a hill if its coasting theres no noiose unless you ease on the throtle slightly. Is this the norm for the engine whine i have been reading about? I hadd all the oils changed at 600 miles and everything is synth. It only happens after the engine is warmed up.

Well, I took my bike into the dealer to have the clutch whine checked out and hopefully have it covered under warranty. After the dealer had it for 5 days they called me back and told me that Yamaha won't replace the clutch basket. Hearing this and reading the prior threads on the forum I called Yamaha customer service. In short, they are doing NOTHING to help me out. I even said to them, "So let me get this right, Yamaha's position is to do nothing in this situation - even though the company has paid to have this situation addressed previously." The customer service person agreed with my statement. Between the clutch whine and the HORRIBLE wobble in the front end (the dealer stated everything was tight and up to specs - even the tire balanced out perfectly) my enjoyment of riding this bike is going south very fast. Just a B*%&H sesstion here. Hope everyone's Venture is whine and wobble free.

Before I purchased my RSTD I did a lot of reading here. I test rode my bike for 20 miles before I purchased it. No whine. I test rode an 07 that whined like crazy and I got a great deal on the leftover 06 I actually purchase. The bike was great. Right around 700 miles, the whine began. It was pretty bad, but, in all honesty, I got used to it. Today my dealer installed the I basket for me (just for the record, as soon as I mentioned the whine the service manager at my dealership said he would order the I basket...he knew about it). Well all I can say is that in my first 60 miles, it seems like a new bike. The whine is still there but so much lower in volume that I cannot believe it.at 45 mph in 4th gear it would make your ears ring. Now...it is barely noticable. I am cautiously optimistic that the I basket has made a big difference; however, since the whine did not start on the original basket for almost 700 miles, I will not say it is a done deal until I have racked up a few hundred more miles. In any event, I just thought I would share my I basket experience with you all. Rick
