  1. I currently own an 1100 Goldwing and I am looking to maybe sell it and get a Venture.

Am I going to like the Venture or is it the same as a Wing and I would not gain anything?

my 2 cents for someone that's usually asking advice rather than offering here.

Ran a 76 wing till 79 and tried again with an 84-1100 till 87. Had the same and only issue with both, quite uncomfortable seating and more so 2 up. At 6'-2 and wife 6-0 probably didn't help comfort level. Can't say anything else negative about my wings. (as member of couple of wing sites, still read many complaints about seat jamming and discomfort on later models)

Having said that, we've put 40mi/65k km. on the 87vr past 3 and half years with no complaints. Wife loves it. My understanding is the MK1 & MK11 have similar ergonomics. I did install a set of Longhorns which added leg room.

For a bike that was a one year stopgap in 2011, we hope to keep it on the road for many more years. hope that helps.

  2. Appreciate the detailed posts. I'll be keeping a closer eye on things. Definitely have to figure out sequential mileages at fuel gauge levels. Intend to keep the bike around a few more years. That also clears up a couple of misconceptions I had about the reserve tank and such. I'll try the run dry to reserve and check remaining mileage, on return. (and remember the gas can)

The only mileage I checked last summer over an 8500 mi. run, 2up, primarily interstates, averaging close to 45 US mpg.

  3. had the red flashing (led?) low fuel on the CM the first time and zero bars on the gauge. Ok, so we're cruising around Hershey PA, when the warning led comes on. Usually adamant about topping up, more so on marathon runs. Scenery slipped by, guess it was bound to happen. Didn't think anything of it at the time.

Have a couple of questions and not a lot of time to research at this point. The reserve petcock on. Is the 1.06g/4L reserve tank separated from the 5.3g/20L main tank capacity for a total of 24L? Does the LED normally operate at the point where the main tank is nearly empty and requires switchover to reserve?

While on topic, also noticed since day one, the ratio of gas gauge level bars isn't anywhere close to the actual amount of fuel in the tank. Gotta live with that I guess.

You'd think an owner should know these things. :confused24:

  4. all time favorite, 69' Stang babyblue 289 V8 slowback got me nicely thru high school.

least favorite, inherited 70' red Pinto later in life from motherinlaw. Might have come in second last if the 1st Gen AM/FM cassette had been an option :grandma:.

  5. My first ride of the year totalled 160 FEET on 4 bikes. Sure hope this season gets better.

    :mustache:

hear ya, haven't moved a foot yet. yesterday and today's 70*F over this way, shoulda been right on it. Got caught up in winterizing/dewinterizing stuff, you know how that goes.

Calling for mid 50's later this week, itching to get out for a first run.

  6. I'm looking for a Biker friendly Motel/Hotel for about 12 - 30 of us in Nashville. (Not sure yet how many are going to head to Nashville for sure at this point.)(Cheap but clean would be nice!)

Wife and I stayed a couple of nights at the Comfort Inn on 1501 Demonbreun Street two years ago enroute to Memphis.

It was one of the only hotels we found at the time under 100 buks, pool, ok rooms, within 20 min. walk close proximity to downtown.

safe for us & the bikes

No prob with bike parking for that time frame and there were a few other bikes around the lot.

I've never had issues with safety over 40 years,, but then again, a lot of dumb luck has probably gone a long way.

  7. the Honda/Michael Bolton commercials.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am so tired of these commercials. Surely these "Holiday" commercials are about over. I am so tired of either muting the sound or switching channels, but I have had enough. :bang head:

second that, one more reason to shop for a PVR. :smash2:

  8. :snow2::cold:

Oh yea,,,, at least we dont die by the droves from being eaten by bears, run over by mooses (should that be meese?) or eaten alive by black flies/mosquitoes n noo-seee-ums!! Dieing is dieing but at least our way involves something really fun!! :backinmyday:

    :rotf::rotf:

    Double LMAO

no problem with our meeses over this way as long as they're not moving, the good drivers usually run right thru them.

  9. In my research, I've come across a notice that motorcycles are not permitted in the old city part of Quebec City. True?

PS - first entry in this section of the forum. I feel special. :)

I've never had any issues running around old QC on the 87' recent as late summer 2011. Can't find any substantial regulations online banning motorcycles specifically.

A heads up if you decide to bike old QC., curbside parking is at premium during the day. Usually no problems sliding into a parking spot before 8-9AM.

We've always had a blast visiting old & new QC. Looking forward to returning next summer on route to east coast.

  10. :sign Rock On:

However, would make a great day trip for some of the southern folks, :scorched: its still sometimes cooler up here in the summer.

Bert, we're taking the 87' to The Rock for a few weeks next summer. Be in touch on our way thru N.B. .. :sign Rock On:

  11. picked up a new 79' XS1100 because the dealer in Parry Sound at the time told me the front wheel could catch air in 3rd... had to have it... and traded the 76' Wing.

Can't remember what I paid for it. I do remember running it extremely hard for the 3 years. Stock tires were fairly decent, cornered like any overpowered 'muscle' bike,

ok, but not great on northern Ontario side roads.

In the 3 years I never had a problem or repair. Would have kept it longer but the second year I installed drop bars and an aftermarket cafe type fairing. That was a mistake,

it never handled the same. (never did lift that front wheel off the ground in 3rd) It was a great fun factor bike if you knew it`s limitations.

  12. Here's a c&p from one of my previous posts past weeks. In hindsight had I known, would have done more research for a driver that fit.

However after grinding off enough metal on the driver edges to fit, it only took about 5 min to seat both seals.

"Picked up a 41mm Motion Pro seal driver on Utube '1984 Venture Seal Replacement, Part 2'. (spec is 40mm).

As it turns out this driver wouldn't quite fit inside my 87' tubes. Had to grind off 1/2 mm circumferance on the driver where the seams meet.

Could be the difference between MK1 and MK2 tolerances."

  13. I feel your pain brother. Here are my findings replacing the washers (26H-23149) below the seal a few weeks ago.

From the 'daily driven 87' forks one washer was conical (as you described) and the other one was flat.

From the 'spare parts 87' forks both washers were flat.

The 2 OEM replacement washers I received were flat.

Till I read your previous post I thought the one found conical washer was unique to my situation.

Presumed the conical washer was a factory installation or bent by previous owner during installation.

Judging by the black sludge that drained out I'd lean towards factory installation.

Installed the OEM flat washers and no problems at 1300 mi.

  14. Hope it works out for you sys. With my limited experience, any questions fire away.

Well, with about 1k miles under the new seals everything appears to be holding..... but,

not quite ready to move on just yet, the rest of the story..

I also had a leaky seal on the 87 'spare parts' bike and decided to repair it at the same time with the 1 good seal from the original.

Pleasant surprise, the 'spare parts' forks had progressives.. good deal eh.

Swapped them out with the OEM's. Over the past week, found the progressives a little tight with 2 up, no air pressure, 10wt synthetic and the 5.5 " oil level.

Yesterday morning replaced the 1-3/8" PVC spacer with 5/8" and siphoned off 1" of oil to 6.5" oil level. Had a chance to chase

a few rainclouds yesterday afternoon a few hours and found this made a substatial difference for the better. I think we're finally dialed in.
