In these pictures I show the new bracket mounted to the factory location and how the 2 into 1 pipes mount to it, I wanted to maintain the rubber vibration isolation like the originals are so I tapped the bracket on the bike so the bolt would go through the sleeve in the isolators on the factory brackets. That also allowed for me to use blue lock-tite on the bolts. Again, not sure if all this will be worth, but from the early stages I already like the look. So I have chosen to go with some HD street glide mufflers my local bike shop had and that created my next mod. I made some temp brackets out of aluminum that I will change to polished SS from flat stock. So Yamaha mounted the 06 muffler to the bag frame and HD mounted their mufflers to a rubber mount under the bags and their bags are deeper then mine so the brackets will show. So my ides here is to weld some flat bar to the bottom of the bag frame and have the SS muffler bracket meet it and use rubber grommets to do the final mount to maintain isolation. I have to finish that part and put her back together to make the next post. Here are a few pics of how it will turn out. I think it will be clean and I was able to maintain the height of my stock mufflers.
  2. Well I finally have my answer, the 06 RSTD 2 into 1 bolts right up with a few mods. I will try to describe how I went about it. As with any project with me I usually start on one thing and before I know it my bike is in pieces with multiple ideas taking shape. I keep telling myself this is one of the reasons I bought it to play with it . So it all started with doing some carb work and one thing lead to another, drivers back rest, exhaust system with some deeper sound, flashing LED brake lights, rear floor boards for my wife, and I hope It stops there. Here in the south I could be riding. I found my exhaust system on ebay and it looked good from the pictures. So I bought it in hopes it would work with out a ton of work and expense. My desire to change it was I wanted a cleaner look and deeper sound which meant with the original meant buying 4 mufflers and then there is the space limits under the bags. I am pleased with the purchase from Show time power sports, but I did have to buy one of the head to pipe connectors and the nut flange that holds it to the head. Also with the 06 they were parting out I was able to get a nice set of factory floor boards. One of the first of 2 mods was to fab a bracket for the 2 into 1 as the original was made for 2 separate pipes. The 06 has a different mount made for the saddle bags and also holds the mufflers. The factory mount location on the bike is the same so that gives me a sold place to start from. So the first step is to start with a bracket of some kind to to catch the 2 into 1 pipes before they go to the muffler where the factory bracket on them are. I started with a flat plate and 1"x1" square tubing and made a flag then cut and ground it to fit . There has to be a left and right version has the "flag" portion has to be to the back of the tubing. Continued
  3. I just changed my 97 RSTC exhaust from a 4 pipe to a 2 into1 from a 06 RSTD. I have the original mufflers that came with them. They have a few cosmetic dings but are good. I will be back to the shop later today and will send some pics of them if you want. My local bike shop guy had a set of mufflers off a Harley street glide that i picked up cheap and I'm still in the fab - modification - reassemble of it now, so I cant say what it will sound like. If you like I'll work out a deal for you.
  4. That is a nice looking bike. Mine has the brackets off the frame for the mufflers and separate brackets for the bags so I should be able to make something fit the factory brackets. I'll keep looking. I'm attaching 2 more pics and again 1 is 1/4 turn off which I have come to find out is an Apple problem. Funny thing it is intermittent. May freebird will see this and chime in.

  6. I have a 97 RSTD and want to install a 2 into 1 exhaust system on both sides without having to change jets if possible. While at my local bike shop he had a sweet bike in for a service, I believe it was an 06, and my question is would the stock exhaust system on his bolt right up to the heads and existing brackets on mine or would there need to be mods made? I have included some pics of both.
  7. Yea I figured the shield out, but the wire bracket was puzzling me. I was at my local bike shop tonight and they had a beautiful pearl white 06 RSTD and it had the same brackets on it. I figured it must be a lift bracket from the factory as the engine would be hanging from a hoist of some type before it was married to the frame so it seemed practical to have a bracket that they could just leave there so why not make it look good. Just my thoughts.

  9. I have dropped it once, grabbed it by the seat and the handle bars and pushed it back up. The handle theory seems legit, but there isn't a lot of room under it to get your fingers there and if was hot not sure.

  12. So I got the new and improved clutch from skydoc_17 installed and the bike back together then took it out for a test ride. Wow I thought it ran good when I got it, but now it can put the power the ground and it has plenty of it. I will say this to any one needing a clutch for this type of bike it is the way to go. I let mine go to far and had to hard shift it to much so I’m pretty sure that is what caused the shifter to break. It was an easy fix and the extra attention to maintenance has given me that peace of mind I like when on the road. The clutch handle is nice and firm plus when you shift it only takes just a lite touch to move it. There are a couple of things during the install that you will need to work out. Make sure to install all the parts in the direction it came apart. I did as it said in the instruction sheet he sends making sure all the dots lined up and one thing is the clutch throw out bearing will likely push out due to gravity pushing fluid into the slave cylinder. Push it in with the butt of a hammer until flush with the nut on the end of the shaft. It makes installing the diaphragm spring a little easier. Over all for the DIY guy this is an easy fix. I’ll share a few pics during the repairs and the last few of why I do this.

Update: Got the bike tore down to see what was happeing and I found that 1of the dowel pins that the shifter forks grabs to rotate the drum shifter found its way out of the side plate that holds them in the segment. I would have found better names, but I didnt invent this assembly. I needed to see an exploded view to understand the parts. I knew I needed a clutch so I was prepared to fix that, but didn't intended to go this far. It was good to have to wait on parts as I keep taking things apart to see how it works and do full maintenance on her. I had an issue with the shifter shaft moving around so I decided to make a bracket to support it at the end where the movement was bad enough to make some slop in the shifter. After looking back, it had a clutch slipping and my heavy foot more than likely caused the damage to the shifter. Shout out to Skydoc_17 for taking his time and helping me understand the mechanics of the clutch system. I upgraded to his clutch spring with the factory discs and plates so when it gets here and installed it should be a lot stronger.
  14. Update. Got home to take the bike to a local motorcycle shop that specializes in older bikes and as I was getting it out of the shop i noticed it shifted in to 1st. Took it out for a quick ride and it shifted fine but no 4th or 5th. The mechanic at the shop checked and seems to think the clutch is smoked or worst case drum shifter may not be in the proper position. Clutch and cage will have to come out for a visual of the shifting mechanism. Any body had something like this happen?
  15. So I figured this would be good to add to this to this post as it is sort of a continuation. I have about 1500 miles on it since I asked this question and have noticed at times when I shoot the gas to it, say to pass someone, I noticed it slipping, but as soon as you back off grab another gear it moves on. Today on the way home I was tuning and downshifting on to a side road and as I powered up I noticed more then usual slipping. I pulled in the clutch and it seamed to shift before I hit the shifter with a ugly noise, but I continued trough 4 and 5 with no issue. When I got to the next stop sign I down shifted and noticed no 1st gear. After messing with the shifter I managed to get it in 2nd and moved on. Went to shift to 3rd and no 3rd. Fortunately I was a mile from the house. When I got it to the shop I was able to get it in neutral or 2nd. Not sure if the clutch took a dump or the tranny gave up. No oil under it so if anyone has a suggestion please chime in. Plan to pull the clutch cover and start investigating.
  16. I have a 97 RSTC with 53k miles on it and just got through changing the clutch slave cylinder and may I say a few post on here made it a simple job. So I noticed there was a fair amount of play in the shifter shaft and possible a leak around the seal. Is it normal to have play where the shaft comes out of the tranny and if so how much? Mine has about 1/16" in any direction. Took her for a test spin and it shifted fine .

  18. Nice use of space 👌 Shop was too small when I built it. Wife pointed out the other day some stuff on the shelves has been there for at least 10 years and I told her as soon as I can it I'll need it.
  19. A little DIY. I ordered a air/hydrulic table to play with the my new toy and just couldnt wait for it to come in so I made me a temp stand to keep it up right for oilchanges and such. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this idea but it did work well. Wife was able to sit on it and help bleed the front brakes. Added a rachet strap and 2 eye bolts around the forks just in case. Hope this helps someone.
  20. Hey, I know Im late to the party I just joined. Beautiful bike! I just picked up a 97 and would like to have the mufflers that turn out the side. Any idea on where to get them? By the way if you havent got your carbs fixed I just pulled mine and took them to and old bike shop here. They had green goo inside. Rebuilt all 4 and cleaned tank. Went back with 93 non ethonol and she crisp on and off the throttle. Thanks in advance.
  21. Thanks to all. Hopefully I can chat with some guys with late ninteys Royal Star's. I take it from what I have found, my 1300 is the same or similiar to a good many models and years. Mine is a 97 V 4 with 52k on it. runs well and in good shape.
