  1. Where are you located in W KY? We are putting on a charity ride from Murray up through Cave in Rock and back May 20th if you'd like to join us. I'd be interested in going on some of your rides too. I'm just north of Murray.

    Ronnie Dawson.

ok now you're info is loading on my phone. I couldn't see it first time. We're not too far apart.

  2. We just had a local take a buzzard to the visor. It knocked him out and laid it down. Luckily no serious injuries. Be careful out there. I once took a quail in the face and ended up with a broken nose, can't imagine a buzzard. Oh the buzzard was declared dead at the scene according to local news.

  3. I would like to invite everyone to our first MPFA charity ride. The MPFA is a non profit organization to assist injured or sick firefighters and their families and other children's charities. We were looking at hosting the ride in the fall but have ratcheted up the date due to need. For example just in our department of 36 firefighters we've had firefighters off work for months at a time recently: a back surgery with complications, a child with a deadly blood disease (cured with marrow transplant), a child with a brain tumor that resulted in a stroke and blindness, and just last week one of our guys got a heart transplant. Kevin had to quit working due to needing the heart, he and his wife have 3 young children, a home and all the bills we all have. In addition he has to stay near the hospital for the next several months resulting in renting another place to live there.

We have planned a 200 mile ride that will take in a Harley dealership, the Sweet Water saloon, Cave in Rock state park and the cave itself, Land between the Lakes national wildlife refuge (north end), and more. In addition to the all day ride on Saturday anyone that wants to come in early we'll take a Friday afternoon informal ride, we can visit and tour Hannigan Motorsports trike shop, stop at Fort Donelson state park (civil war battle ground), eat some catfish, and hit the southern end of Land Between the Lakes. You'll see Paris Tn home of the worlds largest fish fry, Ky Lake one of the leading bass fishing lakes in the country, and some beautiful country. We are also looking into an informal Sunday ride back into Southern IL to Garden of the Gods state park.

May weather here is usually in the 70s with little rain.

We are working with local hotels to secure discounted rooms at this time.

The ride will take place Saturday May 20th in Murray KY.

Registration will be available early next week but I wanted to start getting the word out because of the short notice. Come ride with us, see some beautiful country, and help support the Murray Professional Firefighters Association.

    Thank you

  4. Mine was a "blond" when I got it. Looked ok but as I started to dig into it I found all kinds of "cosmetic" issues. Trunk and bags were cracked, shrouds inside fairing were loose and rattling, engine cases were showing their age, etc. I spent a winter tearing it down and fixing and polishing everything ... and what you see above is the end result. Loved that bike but after about 4 years I was itching for a newer version so I bought an '06 Midnight. FWIW, I preferred the '87.

It really looks good in the pic. I get what you mean with the itch, I keep thinking the same thing until I test ride something and get back on mine. I haven't found anything that compares. Maybe one of these days I can get it looking like yours.

  5. SilverT they do look a lot alike but I can see in your pic yours was taken care of better. Mine was rode hard and put up wet by previous owner. It's been down, bought and rebuilt by a Honda dealer of all people. Engine cases could really use some help from staining and oxidation and the right side dash panels are pretty rough. I bought it several years ago from Wilf over at Hannigans just for a rider. Since I can't find anything I like better I'm slowly trying to restore it before I retire in 4-1/2 years. Only 42k on the clock. Dave Hannigan had one in his collection I was pestering him to sell for months before I got this one.

  6. IMG_0212.JPGThe 86 VR is back on the road after a 1 1/2 year hiatus. I just want to say thanks to snyper316 for the tech help on the TCI issue. Skydoc's clutch mod gives it a great grab, almost too good test driving it on a wet road. Second and third gear got a little squirrely. Countless other member posts have helped me to keep her on the road. I hope to make it to one of the get togethers this year and meet some of the group if I can keep too much work from getting in the way.
  7. I found in another post with the 14-34 part number. Luckily it interchanges. The guy I bought this parts bike from hacked it to pieces when the price of scrap metal was high. He broke a lot of good body parts and cut the wiring harness out for the copper. Most electrical he cut past the plugs so the parts are useless, lucky he couldn't reach the TCI and cut it farther out. Hurt my feelings to see a 1st gen destroyed like that. I did get extra wheels and a seat with backrest with a few useful parts. Thanks again for the info.

  8. Thanks again. I ended up pulling the TCI from a parts bike and managed to shock myself testing the first plug wire. As bad as I hate getting shocked it felt pretty good knowing I found the problem (with help). I'm not sure the year of the parts bike 83-85 but now I'm trying to cross reference part numbers on the TCI to make sure it's compatible with my 86. Then on to carb synch and the road.

  9. Pretty sure I understood from the title "60 day trial". I would tell you what is said at the firehouse about cops but I might offend officers on here. I used tips on the site today in replacing my starter clutch and figured I owed at least $12 for the help. Thanks to all.
