Black Cherry went to the dark side today.

A new Nexen tire mounted and installed today. Thanks Ronnie! (he talked me into it without knowing it). For anyone out there who is mounting their own, spend the money on the NoMar mount/dismount tool. It's worth every penny. This was by far the easiest time I've had changing a tire, ever.

I also installed a rebuilt rear shock. Thanks Fitz!

And new rear brake pads. Thanks Earl!

And a new AGM battery. Thanks Amazon!

And fresh oil and filter. Thanks AutoZone!

And, she got her annual bath and wax job. Thanks ME!

I was also going to replace the stock rear brake rotor as it has well over 100k miles and is fairly worn, though not rough. Unfortunately, there were two mounting screws that refused to break loose. I ended up stripping the socket with the impact driver trying get them out. So, the old rotor stays another season at least.

The dark side maiden voyage was a tremendous success. With new(ish) rear shock and the Nexen tire, she rides like a brand  new bike. The rear shock has been dry since I got her, so I had gotten used to the bounce. Not going to miss it!

  3. Today I removed the rear wheel and rear shock in preparation to Darkside and send the shock off to Dave for rebuild. I'm sick of the bounce!

Unfortunately, in the process I manage to destroy one of the muffler gaskets and bust the Schrader valve off the air line to the shock.

I have a new battery and the Nexen rear tire on order for delivery by Friday. I'm not sure how big a deal the busted Schrader is...

I had my seat redone by Rick last summer, with my long legs and back issues it’s not working for me. I was thinking today of having it redone again back closer to original but thought if anyone wants it I’d swap for an original pillow top.

I might be interested in swapping. I love the pillow top, but it's just a little stretch for me to flat foot. What doe s the Buttler seat look like? Is it sill softer or is it hard like the Corbin?

BTW, did you like that Corbin?

  5. Does anyone know what this tripod would be used for?

The legs extend independently and the center shaft is a friction fit with a thumb screw clamp. The whole thing is much lighter than it looks like it would be.

This is a legacy item. It came with the "new" house.

Thanks Rich, long time no see. We need a northern get together soon, haven’t seen most of y’all since Covid started. Hope the wife is recovering well.

She's doing great. I have to tell her to slow down and not over do it all the time!

The rest of the ride up through Zion, Bryce Canyon Ut and the Million Dollar Hwy in CO then home to South Dakota gave me much better milage but a lot of that was under 70 and sometimes much less.  Overall the trip was around 2700 miles and I calculated an overall mpg of 36.7.  This was my 190lbs and about 100lbs of gear.

All went well other than my heal toe shifter's bolt falling out just as I rolled into Havasu City with 2 lanes of traffic behind me and stuck in high gear.  Managed to get across the intersection and hold the shifter in place till I found a hardware store for a new bolt and LockTite.  Also losing air in my rear shock.  Had to put air in every morning.  Filled to 37psi in the morning and by the next day was in the teens.  How hard are these shocks to rebuild?

For future reference; The dummy bolt on the center cover is the same bolt as the shifter bolt. It does nothing but fill a hole on the center cover.

  8. I have a set of these on my '06. My wife loves them, they look great, they work perfectly, the build quality and materials are top notch, and the WOLO Bad Boy tucks in on them nicely.

Not to mention, Cpl. Newkirk😉 is just a good guy all around.

Ho how did you replace the damage oring on the shock, looks like there s a clip but cant find a way to get it out ...

also do you have a CC oil quantity to suck in there ?

    Thnx

Fitz has a tool he built to pull the shaft out to access the O-Ring. I'm not sure about the clip removal. You could PM dfitzbiz about it.

I plan on pulling my rear shock here soon as well. It's been pogoing for a while.

Very nice.   Wish I had some wood working talent.

This kind of project doesn't take any kind of special talent or skill. The right tools make it easier, but it's more applied engineering than artistic.

  11. I finished the Garden Arbor that I started last weekend. I wanted to give Kris something to enjoy and get rid of the old, half rotten gate posts(sans gate) that had been spanning the brick path to the back grove.

    GardenArborcomplete.thumb.jpg.32302fdf8c33569314bbb6b14cf81905.jpg

    It's made from construction grade 2 x 4 and 2 x 6, with a couple 5/4 deck boards as well.

Ok I’m not trying to hijacker this thread but I’ll call it piggybacking…Many years ago I saw a smoking deal on a brand new (used) Remington  .223 heavy/bull from Cabela’s used rack for under $150 and always wanted a heavy for long range even if it was just to touch paper.  At that time I had a 300yd (in east PA) flat level target distance mostly 50% open into 50% woods or the opposite if I knew the house was empty. Anyway got divorced and moved so I’ve never shot this gun and need a scope.  I’m in Utah now so 300yd is peanuts in comparison.  Asking for scope recommendations. Out here I would love to do some long range varmint or just paper shooting.

The optics world has exploded in the last 20 years. My bench rest .308(I sold it to buy my '06 RSV) sported a Trijicon AccuPoint 5-20 x 50 and it was worth the discounted price I paid for a gun show display model. I'm not sure I'd pony up the $1600.00 they go for new at this time.

This Osprey Global 3-9 x 40 MD has a good reputation in the bargain level scopes and does seem, at first glance to be well made. The rings it came with are junk, at least it came with rings. The glass is very clear and the Mil Dot reticle is crisp. The windage/elevation adjustments are 1/4 MOA/click and the detent is distinct but not too aggressive. The knobs can be reset to show zero at your discretion. Only range time will tell if it's durable/reliable. The MSRP is $169.00, I paid $125.00 for it at a gun show in Birmingham. I've never seen them in any retail store but there is always an Osprey Global vender at every gun show I've been to. They have an elite series which have FFP available, but you are back into the $1,200.00 range for them.

Vortex glass has a spectacular reputation, though their prices have risen along with that reputation. I've never used anything but their red dots.

I had a Leapers(UTG) BugBuster on an AR15, 5.56 for a few years and it was actually quite nice. I just decided to stick with red dots on my ARs and gave the BB to my son in law.
