  1. Cimmer, Thank you for the part numbers. I will post how they worked. Blackwing, I found the source, and it is a leaking hose going into the rear cylinder
  2. Thanks all. Saw no oil in coolant no coolant in oil started back up and found a leak in coolant hose just.above where it enters the engine. Now to figure out how to replace it. Again this is a great site with outstanding people helping others.
  3. Always like to ask the experts before starting. 89 VR out for a ride today, started missing only when starting from a dead stop. Once over 2000 rpms no miss. Did not happen under load in any other gear. Stopped at the store and started dumping coolant. I noted the fan was not running when the engine was stopped. Rode home noted coolant trail down the driveway and again dumped more coolant. This time the fan was running when the engine was stopped. Air temp in the high 80s, temperature gauge never went past halfway and has always worked. Coolant level was checked two days ago and was good. Will have time to look at it later tonight, just looking for ideas where to start. Thanks for looking and offering suggestions, you all are the BEST!!
  4. 9Here is what I came up with and is working well! You need 1/4inch threaded rod, two feet is plenty. In HD electrical department get 1/2 inch EMT one hole strap, package of 1/4inch threaded rod connectors and tie wraps. Also the original JB Weld.. See picture. Not a Utopia back rest but total cost was under $10 Put black friction tape on chrome on the passenger handle. Also sand the connectors before applying the JB weld. You have to close the one whole strap using channel locks to make it snug on the backrest bar. Any suggestions to make this better are welcome.
  5. Looking for any tips or tricks to adjust my stock backrest. I already modified the pad mounting bracket to be able to lower the pad by cutting the plastic on top the same as the bottom. The pad now goes lower which helps some. When I put the bar in the front hole it is to close for me. When I put the bar in the middle hole it is ok but could be better. What I need to do is leave the bar mounted in the second hole but have it pushed foward some. Also I can't figure how to remove the plastic covers. Working out some ideas to move the bar forward, while at the same time making it not move, forwards or backwards as my second seater would like it to not move also. But would like it to fold forward to get into passenger seat. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Phil

  8. Good day all. I have a new to me 89 VR that I obtained last September. I leave it in storage in PA while teaching in FL for 9 months out of the year. Last year I put a new battery in it had it running prepped it for storage and put covered her up. I took an ohm meter test at 11.5 volts, pulled the battery, put it in a cool, dark room for the winter. Plan was to have daughter slow charge it every month. Didn't work out due to military commitments. Today I pulled it out, took an ohm meter test at 6.5 v been slow charging it and now reading 10.4 volts. When I try and start it, I get a clicking noise in front of the battery, and no turning of the motor. I am going to let the slow charge on for the night, and if that doesn't work, maybe try a new battery. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Just by reading this forum I have LEARNED A LOT, and have already figured somethings out to help me along with this bike. THANKS ALL.... Phil
  9. New owner of 89 VR and have been using this forum to learn a LOT. Sometimes it is better to just ask. See attached photo. On the rear audio control I found the two wires and have figured out the one works the intercom. What happens when I plug the wire with the silver tip into the passenger controls? Also where to store the intercome wire when not using? Thanks. Phil
