What I learned about my ’89 VR this summer.

Went to the MTA Rally in Georgia last June and then to my BIL in Jacksonville, NC.

Rode the Tail of the Dragon, which is a bunch of hype.

Finally, after 25 years, I learned how to reset the cruise control.

Before, if it was set to a speed and engaged, I was having trouble resetting the speed, either up or down.

I found that I released it, (touched the brake or clutch), it would reset to whatever the new speed was.

 

I’ve been during a lot of reprogramming the IgniTech ignition I got from Dingy. I did some riding with a vacuum gauge noting vacuum readings at different rpms and throttle settings. Could not get a wide range of vacuum readings. Finally, I installed a check valve in each of the 4 hoses from the vacuum ports to the MAP sensor. Finally, a full range of values from 5 to 28 in/hg.

Using those readings, I reprogrammed the IgnTech.

I also dropped the needles a 1/16” in the carbs and checked float level.

During the trip I was getting around 35 mpg pulling a trailer at 70-75 mph and 45 mpg without the trailer.

 

Leaving NC to come home, I found I had a burned out stator.

Ordered one from Denis Kirk and had it overnighted in. They were the only ones who seemed to have it in stock so we didn’t have to wait very long, but cost me about twice as much. They even called me to verify the shipping address.

Luckly, my bil has an impact screwdriver which is almost a requirement for removing the stator screws. Even so, one of the short screws was damaged enough that I didn’t want it to come loose and bounce around inside the stator. Went to LOWES and found a metric allen head screw to replace it. Took the same allen wrench as the case screws.

Thinking ahead, I may start carrying a spare stator like some of my Goldwing friend do. By replacing the stator screws with allen head screws, I would have all the tools I need in my tool kit.

Not really, I tried all kinds of restrictors and wire inside the restrictor to make the orifice smaller.

The problem is, one intake cycle sucking and three cycles leaking the vacuum.

If you don't use a vacuum gauge, you don't see this.

If you look at the advance with your computer hooked up the IgnTech, you'll see it jumping all over the place.

I fixed that.
