replacement radio for 1st Gen

chocking

Recommended Posts

I've had it with my radio on my 83 VR.. I screwed with it non stop, cleaned it and and even replaced it with one I picked up that i know works. The brass pin connections are just too tricky.

I saw somewhere on here at one time where someone had retrofitted a marine radio into the same location as the original.... but I can't find the post again..

I know lots of people just use MP3's and i pods. those are great, but I still like the plain old radio for around town.

Any thoughts ideas or knowledge on how to put a marine radio in that location.

thanks

Clay

Thanks Rick, here what I did Clay

first i gutted it all out and cut and bent the mounting bracket for the stock tuner and amp to mount my new sony unit on http://www.crutchfield.com/S-0US9qvRNKo8/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=221050&tab=essential_info&i=158CDXR30M#Tab

here the sony mount is rivited to the yamaha bracket

Here it is mounted in place with the sony slide out mount

and here with the head unit in place

I did have to remove the duct work to make room but the air intake now blows air cooling the radio amp.

I also got the sony remote and mounted it on the dash. I had removed the dash display and fabricated some new black plastic to fill the space of the stock display and mounted the remote on it

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/Venture%20XVZ12/mvc_759s_416.jpg the remote controls all radio and cd funtions along with the XM satalite reciever sony has as an add on.

I didnt have a casset deck and had previously installed a I pod tranponder deck in the place the cassette would have been.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b22/MikeM8560/Venture%20XVZ12/MVC-588S.jpg the stereo has 52 watts per chanel ( 4 channel)

and installed Polk 4" 105 watt dash speakers http://www.crutchfield.com/S-C55VjcYspyv/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=51200&tab=essential_info&i=107DB400

the sound is great and alot better bass then stock. Heavy bass will distort if the volume is WAY up :confused24: but im planning to try some bass blocker when i have time

Thanks for the pics Mike. I too finally got fed up searching for a working factory amp that Ebayers didn't think was made of gold and instead found a Sony marine CD player with a wired remote. Now I get to play amatuer electrician this weekend and install it.

I love having a headset though and am going to try wiring the rear speakers into the DIN cable so I can switch back and forth from speakers to headset by using the fader.

Thanks again Mike for the motivation. :D I finally got mine installed and working. I was going to mount it internally like yours but decided to go external instead. I just couldn't give up what little air flows through the vents to my legs.

I had to order a new standard venture cover first (non stereo). Then drill out and put the key lock in. Next was a trip to the local stereo shop for a marine rotating cover. Had to dremel the heck out of the cover and the lips around the internal piece to get it to fit and to work.

moved the waterproof remote to the center cover. Found it easier for me to reach there to hit the controls. I also got a wireless remote with the deck from ebay.

The sony xplode deck sounds sooooooo much better than the factory unit and I have both speakers working again.

Next thing will be replacing the stock speakers for a better set that can handle the power. I spliced the rear speaker wires into a 2.5mm extension jack. I plan on a set of Tork X2 headset speakers to plug into that instead of the JM headset. So it's out of the helmet and probably put it up in the classifieds.
