Gen 1 rear shock question

I still have the oem class system on my 84, but I do have progressive front springs I got from Skydoc. I have been toying with the idea of getting a Progressive 465 Rear Shock & eliminating the air system altogether but the $400 price tag has been slowing me down.

 

Has anyone replaced the rear shock with a Progressive 465 Rear Shock & was it worth it?

I mean did it make a significant improvement like the front progressives do?

I replaced, mine with a Progressive, about two years ago. My sidecar puts more loading on the rear than most any passenger. The canister, that contains the air over oil cushion, is pressurized to 400 psi, if my recollection is correct. I needed to buy a high pressure pump to even check for the proper inflation. The pump has to be of a zero pressure loss design as there is such a small amount of air in the canister. The Progressive spring, that is available separately, probably has more positive effect than the shock. It is much stiffer and brings the bike up to a level position, with the car attached. I do not believe that the dampening ability of the shock is any better than an OEM in good condition.

Is that rear shock an air adjustable one, or set it and live with it? I wish there was an aftermarket shock that would enable you to tune the shock with air, but I dont know of any that do?

 

The unit that I have has an adjustment knob on the canister to change the dampening effect of the shock. The spring is held in place with a large nut that can be moved to increase or decrease the tension.

No there is no air at all

 

These are the specs from Progressive:

 

Completely new for 2009, the 465 Series represents state of the art high pressure gas monotube shock design.

It utilizes a large 46mm bore and deflective disc piston for precise damping.

The beefy 16mm hard chrome shaft rides on custom viton seals for low friction and leak free life.

The 465 is custom tuned for each application and is completely optimized for each bike, from the damping and spring rate all the way down to the jounce bumper.

I have noticed that "USED", there seems to be 2 types of air shocks for the MK1

Does anyone know why the difference on the same year bike??

The 1st pic leads me to believe that one is a MKI as it has a manual schrader valve on the shock. A lot more MKI's didn't have the CLASS and were standard models, Royales had to be ordered as such. The 2nd pic is probably from a MKII, these are just educated guesses, your mileage may vary....
