BigBear Posted March 15, 2012 Share #1 Posted March 15, 2012 I'm contemplating adding an amp to an 08 RSV, and I'm considering the following two amps: Poly-Planar ME60 - 4 Channel, 120 watt Amplifier: http://www.polyplanar.com/product/me60-4-channel-120-watt-amplifier-volume-control and Poly-Planar ME400D - Class D Power Amplifier (125w x 4 ch) http://www.polyplanar.com/sites/default/files/documentation_pdfs/me-400d.pdf Anyone have any experience with either? What amplifier did you install on your bike? Happy with it? Thanks for any and all comments/suggestions.
Cougar Posted March 15, 2012 Share #2 Posted March 15, 2012 I installed a 240 amp into my rear trunk about 5 years ago..from crutchfields. it is a lot of work , and still to this day am not sure it is really worth the trouble. I did however help with my GPS speech I can hear it louder now If you are thinking it will give you BETTER sound , It will not. just a little bit better boost. I did have a write-up in the tech section a long time ago. not sure if it is still there or not. good luck on what ever you decide. EDIT:: Found it... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=487 Jeff
BuddyRich Posted March 15, 2012 Share #3 Posted March 15, 2012 Speaker enclosure is like 60 % of the sound quality. Ours stink as far as that's concerned .
Cougar Posted March 15, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 15, 2012 Correct , That is why the rears sound so much better
BigBear Posted March 15, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted March 15, 2012 Don't spend the money on an amp UNTIL I do something about the ports/baffles behind the speakers! I know that some have put the foam weatherproof baffles behind the speakers and get somewhat better sound. If I wanted to take the baffle cone a step further...would a rigid plastic cone (instead of foam) provide more "life" to the inidividual speakers? Or are the foam baffles as good as it's gonna get? Reason I'm asking...I was over a Daytona Bike week last weekend, and HEARD a custom stereo installation on a custom bike...and it sounded GREAT! May have to ask the question "how did you do that"??? Cougar Posted March 15, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 15, 2012 (edited) I did the foam myself.. not sure about the plastic.. not sure the plastic will have enough give for the rear speakers tho. Trust me when I say I have used EVERYTHING to try and make the sound system better on the 2nd Gen RSV.. for the past 8 years bass blockers. foam, yadda, yadda.. matter fact I have everything removed now except the AMP. And when I do remove the body off my trike I will most likely remove the AMP as well , to conserve on power. IF you ever find a way. PLEASE let me know... Heck I even had placed narrow high output 12x4's (3 speakers each) into the front fairing. and the sound was no better. In a way I have surrendered to this project There is also a few pics of me adding the foam in the tech section as well for the rear. Bottom line is it is not the amps problem. it is what your running it off of... I am very sure those amps would work great if you had a correct source to run them from. EDIT :: Rear Speaker http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18228 Good Luck! Jeff Edited March 15, 2012 by Cougar
Cougar Posted March 15, 2012 Share #7 Posted March 15, 2012 How did they do that? Well my guess is like I say in my above post is from start to finish they used the proper equipment to start with.. we have a mess when we start this project .. make since? Me I am just a fiddler and love to play with things like this.. and I will only go 8 years on a project then give up Jeff
BigBear Posted March 15, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted March 15, 2012 that the head unit on the RSVs are junk!?!?!?! What I dont understand is...even after amplification, the speakers still sound like crap... Why is that? As you can tell...I'm not an audiophile by ANY stretch of the imagination....so put it in small words! :)
Cougar Posted March 15, 2012 Share #9 Posted March 15, 2012 Well, It kinda like why did they add the cassette player it will sound just a TINY bit better. but is it worth the messing around with it? up to you yes and the head is not the best. but they wanted it just good enough to make that cassette player sound really awesome! Put a tape in there and check it out..
flb_78 Posted March 15, 2012 Share #10 Posted March 15, 2012 Your best bet is to buy a RSTD and add a batwing fairing and use quality components throughout.

Richie R Posted March 16, 2012 Share #17 Posted March 16, 2012 hello here is what i did sounds better bumble bee kevin wisor What size are those speakers? Besides making the hole larger did you do anything else? Thanks Richie R
kwisor Posted March 16, 2012 Share #18 Posted March 16, 2012 hello richie thay are 5.5 i took the timplate and cut the hole then i used fiberglass renforced filler to shape the housing. the only thing i did wrong was not tilt the speakers back like the 4". the trunk will not open all the way but i have no problem with it. after i got the shape i used body filler to smooth prime and panted. works great the fiberglass filler is strong enough to hole screws with out any hardware . if i didn't have the corbin passanger back rest it may open. becouse it is longer bumble bee 1999 rsv lexington sc
