traintrax Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 have an 88 royale pita, have done all normal things, cleaned carbs, new battery cables, cleaned starter, fixed oil leaks from stator and p/ucoil wires, had it running good on all 4,then after about 10 minutes tach started going up and down ,neutral light faded out, then it would drop no 2 cyl.then slowly die out.try to start back-up sometimes it will, and sometimes you have to play with all switches, clutch, sidestand, etc.then will start right up and run good for a few more minutes.charges at 13.6-13.8-goes to 13.1 when fan kicks on,it acts like its losing or shorting to ground, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Dano Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Sounds like the TCI is heating up and dropping out. You'll probably need to pull it out and re-solder the pins on there and possibly replace the diodes. Also relocate it to the top of the air box to keep that thing cool! Do a search under the 1st gen tech section on TCI and you'll find all the info you need.
traintrax Posted September 6, 2010 Author Posted September 6, 2010 Many thanks Dano, that was going to be in my future plans,if i decide to keep it,i have been working on this bike for almost 2 months now and have not been able to ride it yet.Thinking maybe i should just cut my loss:fishin:es and buy something ready to go.
Yammer Dan Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Dano could be right on this one. Are you capable enough with a iron to resolder those pins? Might be a fix. TCI's are getting hard to come by. There is a new one being made but I don't know price or what you need to make it work. It is not Original equipment. There is a thread here on it if you can figure it out.
