Yes there are trees in West Texas but they are either scrub trees or imported for east Texas or "deposited by a migrant bird" if you get my drift! Shade is only under artificial means. The upside is it warm and dry here most of the time, Sorry Yankees. Born in Mich but lived here 25 years so I'm almost considered a native.
