Valve clearance check and speedometer ?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this but thought I'ld give it a try. '09 venture owner on 2nd season, love it! bike has 27K on it and runs great, no problems just normal maintenance. Manual calls for valve clearance check at 26,700 miles. Not sure why so specific but got me thinking it might be important. A lot of work when I have no other reason to open it up and its running great. Want some feedback on how vitally important is it? Also electronic speedometer reads 5 to 7 mph slow (I know keeps me from getting tickets!) at highway speeds. any adjustment on that? Thanks for the help!

Valve clearance is kind of like Russian roulette with the engine. Many need no adjustment at the first check, but there are some that do need an adjustment. Do you feel lucky? Even if you open it up and all is good you at least have the peace of mind to know it is good for the next 27K miles.

The valve clearance gets tighter with wear, once it gets to zero the valve does not close and burns up.

As for the odd 26,700 that is the conversion from 43,000 KM.

The speedo can be re-calibrated with an external teeny weeny circuit board found here:

I did this on my VStar 950T and then calibrated it so it's dead on to the GPS.

You need model Y1 (if memory serves)
