My eldest nephew recently bought a house a few blocks from where his folks live. A nice 4 bedroom house. The front flowerbed had the "Southwest Motif" as far as selected vegetation was concerned. There was a selection of cactus, Yucca and three large Agave plants. Herein lies the problem he had with these. He has a 3-year old son and a 7-year old daughter. Having been a kid at one time myself, I know it'll be just a matter of time before one of the kids comes running in screamingly because of a bad encounter with something pointy. Nephew wanted the plants gone and I needed an Agave for my flowerbed to put an end to some neighborhood stray dogs from bedding down in my flowerbed. So we had a break in the weather today and we made arrangements to perform an Agave transplant today. The plan was for nephew to leave a garden hose on overnight slowly trickling in order to loosen up the roots. We'd then wrap a chain around the trunks and pull 'em out with my truck. Everything went as planned except for us destroying the roots on the smallest of the Agave plants. No problem. Between the two others, there ought to be one that was the right size to fill the spot in my flowerbed and the remaining plants were going to have to be either disposed or given away. We loaded the three plants up, threw a strap across the back and with the tailgate down and topper lid up we headed home. I had concerns that I probably should have placed a sign on the back that said "Do not tailgate!" as the largest of the plants was at the back with the spines pointing out like a porcupine. Got home and got to measuring. The largest of the three was going to be the one getting planted at my house. Got the hole dug in the flowerbed, fashioned a rope harness so I could lift the thing by myself without getting harpooned in the process and stuck it in the ground. I then called one of my brothers up and his wife wanted the other plant that had the good root structure. I ran that over to him, made her happy and then dropped the bad one off at the shrub shredding place. To all us Canadians, have a safe and enjoyable Thanks Giving especially with the great summer weather we are having in Ontario. We are off to Boston for the weekend on the bike to visit my nephew and his very expectant wife(due on the 7th) hopefully Savanna will be born while we are there. Hal and Gayle
