  1. I just talked with a service tech supervisor at yamaha.

He said that none of the items i have brought up are warranty issues.

He said it is not unusual to have to replace rotors at some time - 34,000 miles and a heavy rider -- normal wear and tear issues. it is my fault they have worn so much and are well below factory specifications. - not covered

lower farings - not a factory defect norrmal wear and tear not covered

    antenna - not covered

    rear-end whine not covered

they are replacing the trunk lock though.

I talked with two people at yamaha - Erika xt 7692 and her supervisor mark xt 7442 their attitude was so sorry to bad go away.

Yes, i am frustrated, i have tried to get the brake issue dealt with since the first months.

Anyone know of anyone else at yamaha i can call or deal with? please let me know if you do.

My antenna's were covered, but that was with the 99, and I think 2000, the design was bad which made them break, so they replace mind with 2003 antenna's.
  2. I too want to thank everyone for their replies and solutions...I had the exact same thing happen to me this past weekend so I was watching this post with interest..

I'd like to bypass the kill switch..has anyone out there done that? If so, how'd you do it...To me the kill switch is nothing more than a PIA

    Thanks

I remember those days back when I had my 83 1st gen. I had a bad miss and then every once and a while, it wouldn't start. Was up in arms and then decided to check the kill switch. Took it off and saw that it was caroded. Saw that you couldn't actually take it apart, so I just got out my can of electrical cleaner, gave it a good squirt and wala, problem fixed.:thumbsup2:
  3.

Actually they must have done more than that. This one has factory cruise on it like an '84. Missed that the first time around. I also haven't been able to get to the frame Vin yet to check to see if it matches the decal. The place that originally sold the bike to the PO used , was a parts salve shop, and after changing to a used bike retailer in the 80's, selling out to a new owner in early 2000, they finally went out of business last year.... They did a great job mounting my Avon for me the last time around... Anyway, They could have taken an '83 title, the side decal strut, lic. plate, put it on an '84 bike. The frame vin number stamped on the front fork tube will tell the tale...

The PO kept very good maintence records, and he first bought it in 1991 with 13K on the odo, and to muddy the waters even further the bike had an '86 1300cc motor put in it 11K ago.. And..... the serial number of the motor matches the vin on the tag, and on the '83 title. It's an inigma... conundrum.....head scratcher... :confused24:  :group cheers:

Never have enough JT. As long as I keep running into VR's cheap I'll keep buying them. :mo money:

He needs enough first gens. in order to be able to trade them all in for a good used 2nd gen. :whistling:
  4. The best I ever got was 54 MPG. A planned gas stop in the middle of no where was closed and I baby-ed it to the next town, coasted down hill, kept at 55mph and prayed. I put 5.8 gal. in the tank. Worst I got is 33MPG running 75+ with headwind to Tombstone AZ. Both on regular gas (no ethanol). Rod
The worst I ever got, and this is before I changed the mufflers to Baron Nasty Boys with K&N filters was 31 mpg. It was at 7,000 feet, going against a 20 mph headwind at 80 mph. The best I ever got was on the return trip from VWlll Susanville last year where I think I was the only one that bought gas from a gippo gas station, and my bike never ran so good. We went from Susanville to Marysville, took 2.6 gals. to go 145 miles which came out to 55 mpg. The RSV behind me took 3.8 gals. for 38 mpg. To this day, I've been wanting to go back up to that gas station in Susanville and ask the guy who's gas he's putting in his underground tanks ?:mustache::7_6_3[1]:
  5. I think it was buddyrich that said he took his 05 RSV up to 130 mph. At that time, we were questioning how fast the bike would go in each gear, and it was pretty close to the same speeds as my first gen did. The only difference is that the 2nd gen has a higher geared rear end as the engine turns much slower than a 1st gen.:whistling:Top end on the 83 1st gen though was 136 mph.

  6. Yup, somebody always tries to pass the blame. The one major accident I was in was the same way. I was in a semi-flatbed, and with ice on the road and poor visibility, I was out of control for several hundred feet, but going over the Altamont here in Livermore, then heading down the other side, I was out of control and skidded several hundred feet, and by the time I came to a stop, my tractor was facing up hill. The thing is, I didn't hit anybody. I was number 6 out of 31 vehicles, 7 trucks and 24 cars. But after I came to a stop, 3 vehicles ran into me of which on of them was a five ton truck loaded with paint. So facing up hill, he hit me head on, knocking my 18,000 lb. tractor around 180 degrees to where I was facing down hill again. And this is the thing, he sued me because he said I hit him?? Well, I ended up counter suing and won, because he was full of it. Being that there were so many vehicles involved, I had 14 other lawyers there besides my own, and after it was over, I never wanted to go through anything like that again. So it shouldn't be that bad with the fact that there was only one vehicle involved, so I guess just one lawyer??? But you just hang in there, I was coached also, and that helped alot.

But great hearing from you Sherry, hope everything turns out all right and I'll be praying for you.

  7. Rich,ya got me by a few years.I 've been driving semi for 28 years.Every thing from 28'pups to 13 axle superloads...Currently pulling a reefer.(hate it) but it has good insurance.

PS...Have you seen the video of the oversize load that tried to go thru the I-90 tunnel in Boston..I guess it happened within the last 2 weeks.

I've seen many other ones that tried to make it and didn't, mostly under over-passes. We've had one hit here a half dozen times, and with all the technology we have with lasers and such, I just don't see how this can keep happening???:confused24:
  8. Thanks for telling it like it is up front Jack; so sorry, in that case, I'll just replace the battery I have when I think it's about that time. So please don't worry about ordering a battery for me and I'll take my chances. It's too bad that we have to put up with somebody saying one thing and doing another that confuses the issue. Thanks again, and see you at the next M&E for discussing the day trip to Lake Tahoe. Hope the knee is in shape to make the trip by then, take care and have a nice day.:mustache:

  9. Hadn't gotten use to the bike yet (the fact that it was top heavy), was pretty tired when I pulled into a restaurant parking lot at one in the morning. The parking lot had an angle to it and when I slowed down making a right hand turn (which is harder for most people), I lost my balance and over she went. Tried to hold it up as it went down and out my back went, this was the eleventh time. The bike wasn't damaged, but felt like an idiot because of my back going out and couldn't lift the bike back up. So it took about 5 to 10 minutes before a pickup drove in, saw my delema, and two guys got out and asked if they could help. So got it back up, went into the cafe for a cup of Joe, and my trip to L.A. was over with my back out. Was 70 miles from home at the time, and driving home was very painful for every bump I hit on the way. Seems that trying to make a sharp turn on an uneven surface is not the way to go on the RSV. :buttkick:

  10. Okay, looks like somebody started something and it probably won't end here. One thread asked how many (Active/Retired LEO's in the group) and after this one, somebody will probably ask how many mechanics, etc, etc. But anyway, have had my Class A license for 43 years and have driven just about everything there is right up to 80,000 lbs. I won't tell you about the real overweight trucks I've driven. But did it for 33 years and took a long rest (retired, of which I only drove half a dozen trucks in 10 years of retirement. Went back to work after financial problems, so went back to what I know best and have been driving big rigs again for almost 3 years now. Cadillac's to what I ever drove back in the old days with much more power. :>)

  11. Man, if I were heavier, I'd go stand in line. Seems I saw this program the other day on TV, and the people that get Gastric By-pass surgery, everyone of them that got it, their diabetes went away with-in 4 to 7 days after surgery, also including Sleep Apnia. I've had diabeties for 13 years, and I've really not gotten use to the fact that I can't live like I was use to. Yes, I've managed to keep my A1C below 7, but it involves not eating the foods I've been so accustom to. The problem with the operation is that it is still a dangerous one. One out of every one thousand people that gets it, dies from complications. But heres the big catch, you have to be morbidly obese. I guess 100+ lbs. overweight, I'm around 70 lbs. over. If you choose to do it the right way, then its the old diet and extercise which worked for me until my doctor added more perscription pills which caused me to gain 20 lbs., and therefore the numbers started to climb. I did stop walking though, and now I'm thinking of going back to doing so in order to keep my numbers in check. So good luck to anybody that gets this disease, it's 60% controlable if you follow the doctors orders. :thumbsup2:

  12. Hi Jack,

This is just an idea, was just wondering if you could put me on the list and order a battery for my scoot, probably won't need it for awhile, but thought maybe the next time we get together, just pick up the battery from you and give you cash :mo money:. Saw how slow this thing was getting off the ground, so decided to jump in to get you close to that 10 orders you were looking for. If this doesn't work for you, then I'll just go ahead and do the PayPal thing, thanks much.

  13. My dad had both done when he was in his 70's and his vision was much improved to the point that all he needed was reading glasses if the print was small. He also wore glasses all the time, but after both surgeries, he only needed them for reading some of the time.

Good luck, we will keep you in our prayers.............

He's 83, had one done, then the other one done about 2 months later, and he said he can see as good as when he did when he was 20 years old. I'd like to do the same thing if I ever get the problem, but with diabetes, their afraid of infection of which gets pretty serious when you have this disease. My prayers are with you, and my dad said the same thing though, it was a piece of cake with no pain what so ever.:thumbsup2:
  14. My prayers go out for a speedy recovery Jack and Bev. I guess we'll be talking about this a little when VWIV comes along. Hope you guys are all healed up by then, and then you should have that new scoot for us to look at. I had my turn T-boning a car in a parking lot at around 10 mph, she backed out so fast, I didn't even have time to hit the brakes. (Get this, she's blonde of course), she told the police officer she saw me coming, and said she speeded up to try and get out of my way so I wouldn't hit her. I was thrown off the bike and bruised up, $4,000.00 damage to the bike, she had no insurance and all I had was liability, so rather than fight it, (estimate was excesive) and I didn't want to spend that much :mo money:, so I took it home and did the work myself, and only spent $700.00.

  15. Well I found out this afternoon on my way home from work just how easy it is to pick up this tank of a bike. I was 1 1/2 blocks from home when i was at the last stop before pulling in to the drive. I started the left turn and noticed something in the road. I was still in the friction zone but needed to cut harder to the left to miss it. Well I did not have enough throttle and she died and just laid right over. I backed up in to her, just like on Ride like a pro and picked her right up. I hated tipping over but I'm glad I know how easy it is to get back up.
but this was two o'clock in the morning, so I had the luck of nobody seeing it happen. :whistling:
  16. I have the original 404s on my RSV. Just turned 10,000 miles as I got home from work. I do not ride aggressively and expect ot get another 4000 to 5000 miles out of the rear tire. No unusual wear and they seem just fine.

On my VStar 650, the rear 404 lasted about 8200 miles, the front is still original at 9200 miles. I replaced the rear with another 404 to keep them matched and the price was right.

From what I have read here about tires, it really sounds like Dunlop has quality control issues.

This is probably about the tenth time I've put this story on. The quality tire they had lasted about about 20 years until they stopped making it. With my 1st gen., I was getting 20k out of the rear tire, a 404. I sold it and bought a 99-RSV. I got 21k out of the first rear tire, and the most I ever got was out of the 3rd 404 I bought which was 24k. That's when they decided to stop making such a good lasting tire, and that was the 150-90B15. That number was switched to 150-9015, and I only got 8,000 miles out of that tire, needless to say, I was mad as a hornet. They found out the gas companies were making a lot of money, so they decided to follow suit and make a softer rubber tire, so I have to buy a new tire every 8 months now, instead of every two years. (Guess what), they seem to find one of the 150-90B15 tires in the archives the last time I ordered a tire, and the hard rubber tire hasn't shown any wear at almost 6,000 miles. I guess this will be the last time I get my moneys worth out of a D404 tire that wears. Expensive tires and gas don't mix, I wanted to keep using the B tire in order to save :mo money:, but Dunlop had other ideas. :crying:
  17. Ain't that the truth. Baking up Vic on our Yosemite trip, I guess I missed the stations he saw those prices, but the one we stopped at in Mariposa was the first time I've ever payed over $4.00 a gallon. I use 89 which was $4.10 a gal., and I knew they were going to get us as it's the last stop for gas before going into the valley. Next thing you know, they'll be putting bike trails into the valley because nobody can afford to drive. Highest I saw diesel was $4.60, and was glad I don't own any cars or pick-ups that run on diesel. :mo money:

  18. I won't buy another CAUSE I really like the one I have. Best all around bike for the price and I am into Cadillacs and Luxury cars/bikes at this stage in my life. My hot rod days are long gone. I no longer feel the need to go blindly fast. But I do like going ALL day if I have to. And 16 hours on a Venture is a lot easier than most other bikes. Now there's nothing wrong with pulling the front wheel off the ground once in a while . No, it ain't the fastest in the world but I really don't need to do that any more. It is certainly fast enough for my blood these days. Just wanna get there in one piece now.
    What he said! :mustache:
  19. I have seen a few tweaked Ventures beat crotch rockets

    :)

Thats what I liked about my 1st gen Brad, I do miss that extra power my 83 had compared to the 2nd gen. but got to say since my age has caught up with me, the 2nd gen. is fast enough now. I'm out to enjoy just the ride and the scenery now and see if I can get 24,000 miles out of the rear tire like I did the time before last. Got over 5,000 miles on it now, and it doesn't look like it's even started to wear yet. I really got spoiled getting a new tire every two years instead of every 8 months until Dunlop decided to only make a soft rubber tire instead of making both a soft and a hard one tire. Greed finally set in, and their like everybody else now, only wanting to make more money and the heck with us poor people wanting to get a good long lasting tire now. :crying:
