  1. Hey! That sounds like the gremlin I had last year! I musta lost him in Cudahy and he found your bike. Uh Oh, you haven't sync'd your bike lately, have you? Maybe that's how he transfered from my bike to yours...:whistling:

I never did figure out what was causing the cut-out in my bike, it just stopped happening. I had cleaned/sprayed the kill switch, messed with the fuse box, starter relay, it would still kill off in mid-ride, only to be restarted in 30 minutes to 2 hours later. Then all of a sudden, it hasn't happened (knock on wood). I have had my bike partially disassembled, so maybe I move something unknowingly. I do have a new battery in it, running the new TCI, still have glass fuses (I know, I know), old starter relay, new starter, I did resolder the computer recently due to a headlight issue, and touched all the connections, maybe that fixed it?

  2. Sounds like some of us have already got the perfect touring bike in the First Gen:

    Fixed fairing (check)

    Room for floorboards (aftermarket)

Relaxed seating and foot position (Russell Day Long and highway pegs)

    Plenty of luggage space (check)

    Smooth running (check)

    Power adjustable windshield (OK, not)

    Air Ride (check)

ABS (I'll give you that one, but the linked brakes is nearly as effective)

FI (maybe, but a well tuned carb functions very well)

LED lights (many have converted the First Gen, right?)

HID (again, very doable and some have done so)

Dual Headlights (seen some dual HID projectors on a First Gen)

Mounting Space for GPS and Phone (check. Snagglestuds on mine give plenty of space for those items)

Radio/USB/SD card/aux in (check. Got them on my 1990)

    Cruise (Yep!, got it)

    Center Stand (Yep! Got it)

Reverse (As long as I have a co-rider, got it covered)

Intercom/CB (check. Once again the First Gen was ahead of it's time.)

Removable trunk (hmm, tough one there, you got me)

    Water Cooled (check)

Full Fairing Protection (check, with Air Wings)

    Heated Seat and Grips (aftermarket)

Vents for heat/cool (check, again with Air Wings)

As one can see the First Gen is nearly ideal with some user modifications. Can you tell I am very happy with mine?

And did I mention how inexpensively one can get this ideal touring motorcycle?

I know I am preaching to the choir, Andrew.

Yeah, I like my 1st gen (Mk1) too. And remember, the '83-85 trunks & saddlebags ARE removable. And most, if not all (eventually), of that list WILL be on my bike.

  3. It comes down to this:

How many times do you want to remove your engine from the frame?

If you pull your engine and rebuild it, and also check (and fix) to make sure you won't encounter the 2nd gear issue in another year or so? That would be one engine removal and your bike will probably last a long time.

If you swap out the parts engine (w/o opening it) you might get a gem or a problem waiting to be discovered. That would be either one engine swap or 2 (or more) if issues pop up.

Now if it was me (not a lot of money, limited free time, and the know-how to pull it myself), I'd run it as is until I could save up a few bucks and search the interweb for a great deal on a newer known good running motor (because of the fixed 2nd gear and the extra 100cc), which is what I did for mine. I don't want to go back inside my motor ever again, I'll get a 2nd gen before I pull or split my motor again.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

  4. Let's see, it would need a fixed fairing, room for floorboards, relaxed seating and foot position, plenty of baggage, smooth running, power adj windshield, air ride, ABS, FI, LED lights, HID, dual headlights, mounting space for GPS & phone, radio/USB/SD card/aux in (no CD or cassette players), cruise, center stand (with assist), reverse, intercom/CB, removable trunk, I can come up with more.

p.s. water cooled, full fairing protection, heated seat/grips, vents for heat or fresh (cool) air flow, etc.

  5. Jeff's tent makes Orlin's huge white shed look like a chicken coop.

Jeff, Ringling Bros called, they want their tent back.

Jeff needs a building permit to set-up his tent.

You can fit the Mall of America inside Jeff's tent.

Jeff's tent has it's own zip code.

Ok, enough of that. Can't wait Orlin, less than 2 weeks to go!

  6. ...I have tried to take apart ______ ...and after taking _____ apart there was no way I could see to put it back together.

How come that seems to happen a lot to many of my projects?!? (Just fill in the blanks with whatever I'm trying to fix.)

Alvald, if other offers of parts fall thru, I have a spare '83 dash, I don't know the condition of the speedo/odo, I could swap it out on my bike to test it out first. PM me if interested.

  7. I too say FI is nice. But I also know that FI has stumbled along the way too. I know of some vehicles that their FI system is poorly designed and has a tendency to fail, and often. But for the most part FI has come a long ways and is quite reliable.

After work in the parking lot, you know who has FI and who has to choke theirs. FI starts right up, no high revs as the engine warms up and you have to let in the choke, but not too much or it dies off. So my vote is in the FI box.

  8. Ok, if I'm gone on a long weekend and don't get to look at the site for a few days, there are numeous "new posts". I click on the "new posts" and up pop maybe 5-9 pages worth of new stuff for me to look at. But if I don't get thru all those pages within a hour or so, it then comes up with the search not found (or something like that). If I do "new posts" again, it shows only the few that have happened in that hour I've been on.

I know there is a "Today's Posts" button, but many are older than that so they don't show up. I don't want to search every forum for what I missed, and I can't find a setting that increases the time limit before it makes new posts to old posts.

Any buttons or search feature that I might have missed? Or am I doomed to search forums one-by-one to find the new stuff, a pennance for me not being on here daily?

  9. :sign yeah that: But inquiring minds want to know, will it make a 2nd gen faster?!?!?

I have an '83 (no indicator available) and I dropped in a '88 engine that had the gear indicator switch. I now have a '84 gauge cluster that I want to install so I can have the gear indicator. All I gotta do is re-wire the connectors (I got them with the gauges) and all should be good.

  10. I know what is needed! Spike strips! A fold-out parking lot space size rectangle that causes flats to anyone who pulls too close to your bike. Do some damage to those who try and damage your vehicle.

  11. Funny thing, I got a free e-mail address from Yahoo long before I got my own computer. Everyone always uses that e-mail, so I never set up microsoft outlook, nor do I use my dsl mail. Yahoo spam seems to always catch those DSL, UPS, FedEx, USPS scams so the only time I see them is when I check my spam to see if a legitimate e-mail got spammed accidentally.

  12. I did a Demo Day a year ago or so, the CC is a very nice ride, I'd get one. But I do like the Vision too, as the fixed fairing is what I prefer. Funny thing, as big as the Vision's bags look, they have a surprisingly smaller space than the CC's bags.

p.s. Only thing was when I tried to wind those V-twins out like a Yamaha, I bounced off the rev limiter...

  13. If I had to do it again, I would go with a whole engine swap. Less hassle, easier to do, and you don't have to worry if you forgot to put something back in and have to pop it open again . I'm not saying that it's overly difficult to replace 2nd gear, I'm just saying to me it's worth it to do a whole engine swap and skip most of the headache. Hindsight is 20/20.
