  1. Thank you Puc for mentioning my mom. I'm coping better now. okay, so I turn kill switch on then turn ignition and don't hit start button? If that's correct I will try it. It does have original plug wires but I did replace the caps with oem since others were toast.
  2. I always use Stabil in my gas which should prevent this.
  3. Had a heck of a time starting up my bike today. Had battery on a trickle charger for a month now which I believe is last time I started it. I've also had it resting on the side stand . After I finally got her going , and warned up she didn't appear to run very well, maybe only on 3 . Anyway, maybe I should put her on the centerstand. I also left the petcock open while she was parked.
  4. It's been 2weeks since my mom's passing and I have decided to start work on my 1965 Honda. This is keeping my mind busy and helping with the grieving process.
  5. Update. It's been 2 weeks and I am doing better. In terms of cause of death, this is interesting, so let me back up a few years. Each year, my wife and I would travel from Oklahoma to South Carolina to see my mom. About 2 years ago upon visiting we noticed her abdomen had suddenly distended and it was quite noticeable! I chalked it off to overeating but she had always been very petite so this didn't make sense. I urged her to see a doctor but my mother was not the type to do that, claiming she was fine. She was an avid smoker and enjoyed her wine(she started drinking regularly after my dad's passing 25 years ago) Evidently her liver had become diseased and contributed to ascites ( fluid in abdomen). This in turn caused cardiac arrest. This all sounds horrible, since modern medicine could have helped ( liver transplant, etc) but......that would not have mattered since she was nearing 80 and the likelihood of an intervention was minimal if not impossible. I remember 20 years ago talking to her about her drinking and it obviously did no good. With all this being said, my mother was the most caring person I've ever known. She lived a good life and had a good relationship with God. Please take care of your bodies. After all, it is a temple that should not be defiled. Well, that's what I believe. Thanks again for your prayers . I've started restoring my 1965 Honda which is helping me with the grieving process.
  6. My mother was cremated today. I'm feeling very weird right now!! It's messing with my mind!
  7. Thank you to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. This is tough!! I should hop on my bike and head to South Carolina (where she is) instead of flying!!
  8. So my wife and I were headed to Wichita , Ks today to attend a family member's funeral on her side (cousin, only 48) When I received a phone call (while on the road ) from my brother. He informed me that our mother just passed ! I live in Oklahoma and my mother in South Carolina. I just visited her this last summer. I am very upset and in shock. Writing this is keeping my mind busy but I'm still in shock. My mom was my brother's life and I am flying out to be with him! Life is short and families (like ours) who quarrel and don't speak to each other in over 20 yrs should learn from this. I really don't know what else to say but I miss my mom already and can't believe she is gone. I will know tomorrow what the cause was. She was 77.
  9. I have delinked the brakes already and put in a new master cylinder in the rear. My rear caliper is slightly dragging on the brake disk so was just wanting to put a new generic caliper on the back, otherwise i will have to rebuild the caliper and i don't want to do that. When the bike is on the center stand, i can turn the rear wheel but its not spinning freely, like i said it catches a little but not too much. is that normal?
  10. Is there a REAR brake caliper that I can upgrade too. Maybe even one from a newer bike. thanks
  11. Fuel tank is completed. I went ahead and used RED- KOTE liner , now just waiting to cure. I'm glad i went this route as the tank had some rust in it even after i cleaned it really well the first time round. Must have had some water in the fuel, anyway, I've used rk on many goldwing tanks and its always worked really well. Later
  12. i will say this, starting from scratch gave me the "know how" or insight to some areas of this bike. I had the sub frame and attached parts off in 5 min, then the tank is exposed and simply lifts off after detaching hoses. I really should have put a tank liner in it since these old tanks are prone to pinholes and such. Oh well, I really enjoyed my last ride even though it was only around 50 miles but I like the way the bike handles and the fact that she is back on the road is really cool to me. I'm going to quickly but properly fix this tank so I can head back out again soon!!
  13. Well, walked into garage yesterday morning and smelled gas fumes. stream of gas under bike coming from some portion of the tank. I pulled the sub frame yesterday and will remove tank this weekend. I will probably put RED KOTE tank liner in to fix this once and for all! I just left all the parts on the sub frame and it slipped off nicely all in one piece. Will keep you updated!
  14. any chance i can get these pics restored: the first post on this link: https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?78228-Crankcase-Vent-Tube
  15. Okay, here is what i'm going to try first. I will snake a line to rear with small filter on end, if this creates too much of an oily mess then i will go back to stock mod with t fitting.
  16. From what i have read, the oil will still contaminate the airbox filter, this is why some have gone with the mod. would this work? https://cdn.thumpertalk.com/uploads/monthly_11_2015/post-421708-0-65566300-1448245554.jpg
  17. Okay, need some answers here. The oil level in crankcase is just below half as suggested by the forum. I still have the crankcase vent tube (with little filter on end) going into the right side of cowling and upon coming back from a ride I had some oil leaking from the filter down the cowling which splattered onto my pants. This is not going to work for me! I also smell the gases from this hose. Here is my question. Does the breather tube have to be facing up or can i get a longer tube and snake it back and under towards the rear shock ( but maybe that's not a good idea since oil might get on the rear tire) I think with this engine being so old, I'm going to have some blow -by no matter what the oil level is. I don't know what to do but i do know that i don't want to go back to stock setup. Any ideas? Skydocs method seems too tricky and tedious to do.
  18. Where are the pics for this thread? https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?32356-Crank-Case-Vent-Upgrade!
  19. WOW!! This very topic caused some ruffled feathers back in 09. Found this written by Skydoc. When a brother VentureRider.Org member starts a thread asking for help with their bike, I have NEVER refused them ANY information I have on the few subjects that I have knowledge about. As it was for me when I first joined this group. A portion of the members took a liken' to me and shared the information they had, walked me thru the fixes, and shared in the pride of knowing that between the two (or more) of us we were able to repair my bike or upgrade an issue that was causing me trouble. For anyone who thinks that their 98 horse power MOTORCYCLE isn't putting enough hydro-carbons out of the tailpipes to kill off more than a few trees, or their car or truck for that matter, should live in a state where they "smog check" every vehicle, then you would get an idea just how bad vehicle pollution is. I'm sure we ALL do our fair share of destroying the ozone with the vehicles we drive/ride, the places we work, the trash we throw away, etc. This old saying comes to mind, and it goes like this: "People that live in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones!" So unless you live in a mud hut, WALK everywhere you go, wear animal skins for clothes, and of course NEVER ride your motorcycle anywhere, perhaps you might consider confining your "politically correct" comments to some other forum and leave the repair and upgrading of motorcycles to the people who are interested in repairing and upgrading their motorcycles! I apologize to Ken for hijacking this thread, after all the man said he had a problem with his bike, I had the same problem and told him what I did to fix it, Isn't that what we are all here for? If I wanted to "hug trees" I'd join the Sierra Club.org, not VentureRider.Org. My name is Earl Harrell (skydoc_17) and that's how I feel about this subject. Interesting! I couldn't find any pics of skydocs mod though.
  20. I just found this: "For those of you with early Ventures that had the air box drain hose that went to the ground, Yamaha did a design change and issued a tech bulletin. Basically to tee the drain hose back into the breather hose so that oil could eventually drip back down the breather to the crankcase. Here is the fix... The bulletin its M84-017 issued 4/6/84. On the breather hose from crankcase to air box, cut the hose 35 mm from the crankcase end. Install a tee fitting Yamaha part # 90413-12017-00 between the 35 mm hose and the remaining breather hose, and use 2 clips Yamaha part #90467-14015-00. Shorten your air box drain hose to 360 mm, by cutting off the bottom end and discarding the inline filter., Reuse one of the clips from your inline filter on the drain hose to install it into the tee you installed on the breather hose."
  21. Okay, Can anyone clarify the crankcase breather mod? I'm thinking the setup I have is not helping my gas mileage. Here is my setup which the po did. Both holes capped on airbox. A clear tube running from crankase with a small air filter on end of tube. This tube runs into the cowling on right side where it is not getting much air since the air vent (one facing forward) is blocked off with cardboard. I read somewhere that skydoc had a kit for this. Any thoughts on this and should the little filter at end be exposed to outside to get sufficient air to breath?
  22. What should my gas mileage be? I get around town would be less but what about highway mileage?
  23. Okay,, I think everything is tweaked nicely now. Bike running way smoother and way faster!!! I also leaned her out a bit and much better . Went for numerous rides today and all went well! Now, time to resurface windshield.
