Water in the saddlebags is not normal. Do you have the rubber gasket that fits into the rim of the lower bag? When the two latches are snapped into place they should compress the gasket and provide a waterproof closure.
No I dont. Where the aluminum trim that seals the bag with some what of a tongue and groove, there is no weather striping. Ill have to take a photo of it when I get home. Neither bag has it.

Does anyone else have water in their saddlebags after it rains? Is there a fix?
-
Great stuff. I will get to it when I get back from Tennessee. I ended up rented a bike from HD and doing the Gatlinburg Loop and Tail of the Dragon. Looking forward to getting the bike back on the road when I get home. Thanks again for the help. I will report back with my findings.

That's what I see too Rod. But that carb would have taken you home if you had, had an issue on the road; and likely you just might be that guy that figures a work around when in a jamb.
Cheers and if it were me I'd keep getting familiar with the bike systems before syncing carbs, say like a compression and coil voltage...
How do I check coil voltage? What am I looking for?
-
yea the one i repaired (bottom right) is hanging up or not performing the same as the others. I'm glad they are easy to swap out. I do have to sync the carbs. I'm sure that is a big problem.
-
Something like this will get a guy home! But would you leave for a long trip?
I think you did a very good job!
Try this this, stop the video at 0.11 / imagine a line between front left and rear right, do the same for the other 2 remaining.
If I may ask what else have you checked on the bike?
Electrical? Compression? Rear wheel lash? Filters...
The bike was running when I bought it. Obviously it wasn't running well with two stuck carb slides. Everyone on this form was saying how snappy the bike is and I wasn't getting that feeling so pulled it apart. I have changes the oil and oil filter, air filter is clean enough and new plugs. I have not done a compression test. I have been busy with fixing the cruise control and other minor things.

"Frankenslide" works! Can you tell which one it is?
-
So for the record/ that is completely wrong/ but looks very well accomplished! Now I'm not suggesting they'll stay together in symphony but,,, If you had painted them before taking the pic,, would be hard pressed to see the repair!
Not bad rookie, welcome to the club Rod.
Patch
Not celebrating yet.... but I believe it will work. But I am purchasing two from a fellow member.

The boots that the carbs sit on are steel with rubber molded over, it is common to have small cracks that do not and will not leak.
Good information. I will re-evaluate the intake boots once I get a replacement slide.
-
But I'm still scratching my head over why they were tight. I don't really know how they were when pulling them apart but sure noticed it putting them back together. Any of you guys ever had this problem?
-
I have several Carb slide, as to condition and such not 100% but I will check them I know 2 need diaphragms
Great. My boots are fine (i think). I really need the plastic part because the is what shattered. I have never swapped the rubber boot on the slides before but I am assuming its straight forward. Especially now the I have one in pieces in front of me.

I googled and found these but there are other vendors tha supply the diaphrams.
Sorry I guess I was not clear. Its the intake boots that are cracked. But I appreciate the effort. Im shocked at the cost of the slides $$$$$$$

So I just went back out to the garage because I was wondering if maybe I put the vent hole on the slide backwards (if it matters). So I found that the slide and diaphragm came apart in the carb which Ive never seen before. While trying to squeeze it back together, it shattered in my hand. Not happy. So I pulled apart the other one that was not working and found it to be loose as well. Even after squeezing it back together I could still spin the diaphragm around. Does anyone have two slides laying around?
-
So I just pulled the carbs of the bike today, cleaned them out and returned them back to the bike. When pulling them apart, I noticed that the rubber diaphragm on the carb slide was loose and spinning on the slide. Noticing that the metal insert was pulled out a bit, I pushed it back in, tightening the rubber again as it should be. Putting the carbs back together I noticed that the slides were rather tight. They would not drop right in as I'm used to on other bikes. I took a green scotch brite pad and polished the interior of the carb and wiped clean. This seems to do better and once all together the slide would go up and down. I wasn't thrilled will how it when together but it seemed like it would work. Got the bike running and two of the four slides stopped moving all together. While pulling the carbs, I notice that the boots have a tiny crack so theres that issues now but I believe the slide should not be affected by the small vacuum leak from the boots. Any one ever have this issue? Oil on the slide did not seem to help. I hope to post a video of it soon. Where should I get boots from?

The new steering bearings did noting for the pull to the left. They do make a special tool for adjusting the bearings but if you are creative you could do it without the special tool.
Were you able to solve the problem or is it something you just live with?
-
Mine never wobbled, but if I let go the bars it makes a hard left turn, regardless of side to side CG, for aft CG wind direction or road camber.
When my steering bearings were worn there was a slight wobble all the time. It does not take much looseness for the head to be to loose. With the front wheel off the ground flip the steering against the stops, there should be a bit of resistance, if it moves very freely tighten up the bearing a bit. Once you get the tightness correct then you can turn the steering from side to side slowly to feel if there is an indent, usually near center. if there is any detent then your bearings are shot and need to be replaced. You can easily have bad bearings and not feel any looseness or movement shaking the forks.
Oh ya, You are not supposed to let go of the handlebars.......
Mine does the same. When I let go of the handlebars it wants to turn left. Was the steering bearings the issue for you? Is there a special tool required to tighten the bearing?

Yeah I have 1I will double check to make sure and I'll get back to you
I appreciate it. Thanks

Well that's all good stuff. I have a much better understanding of system now. I just went out and played with it abit. I'm going to have to check out solenoid and connection at rear shock. Not an issue now, but when I start traveling I would like it to work proper. A few trips planned late summer/fall so I want to be ready. So much thanx to all of you. I'm sure I'm not done asking questions. Even though this bike is 30 years old, it has some pretty complicated features and I'm just not that savy. All of my bikes in the past, even though big, where very basic in technology. I can only imagine how techno the 2018 Venture is. Ride on to all.
Side bar; I'm looking for peeps to ride/travel with. Camp out weekends, trips to nowhere, that kinda stuff, so if you in the area or within a couple hundred miles of me, let's get together. Mostly HD riders around here. Bar to bar kinda riding. Not my thing. But we do have alot of awesome roads out around here. Anyway Happy 4th everyone.

Having the same issue with my rear suspension. The bike will not adjust while ride because the Class system (air ride) is not on while the key is in the ON position. Lot of guys will recommend taking apart the three solenoids in the controller to make sure there is no corrosion and giving them a good cleaning if there is. I did this and now my rear air leaks out quicker. I believe that one of the solenoids isn't seating properly when closed. Spray some soapy water around and see if you get lucky enough and find a leak. good luck.

I just checked mine and found that the bolt was tight but the stand (when extended) had a lot of up and down play. I think the clamp has widen from a loose bolt and the bike's weight leaning on it. Is that the play that this thread wants me to address??

1984 VR. I will check the lock to look for a seal. Just wanted to get a feel if I'm the only one experiencing this.
