  1. Good find Man's... I for one would LOVE to find a car tire that would fit my 1st Gens as I tend to go thru tires fairly quickly.. I have tried numerous times to locate one and have some comments to make about what you have found here.. I think you should repost this thread or I will copy/paste your thread over to the Water Hole in an effort to draw more attention to it and see if we cant get more knowledgeable input there then I can offer... O.K.?
It would be fantastic if you were to copy it. I just knew that sidecar riders would be interested

  2. From experience tires are ok to be put on a narrower rim. My 31/10.5r16 inch tires on my truck recommend a 10x16 rim but I have them mounted on 9x16 stock rims. I worked out according to 6.496 inch section width with factory tire is about 5.51 inch wide leaving a diff of .986 inch or .493 inch per side. If someone who has there bike handy would check clearance from factory to swingarm that would be fantastic. I am really sick of burning through a tire over 9k on my sidecar.

  3. So I did a bit of searching and I found out that that it actually has a section width of 6.495" where as stock tires are 5.51" so that's 0.986" wider or about 0.493 per side. Dose anyone know what the drive shaft clearance is? My bike is sitting in a garage about 30 miles away.

  4. Well I dont know if there is any difference between first and second gen kits. But I believe my second gen kit had a spark plug socket that you could put the screw driver shaft thru to break loose. A flip screw driver, probably a 8-10, 9-11, 12-13 open end wrenches. None of the tools are very good quality. A pair of joke pliers. I think if you had a flip screw driver, a couple of choice allens and 8-10-11-13 mm wrench youd have it covered. On my Victory I have my leatherman tool I carry on my belt, a roll of electrical tape in the bag, a cell phone and credit card. Truth is I dont think your going to be able to fix a hole lot on the side of the road anymore. Unless your Cowpuc.
Just about all of my repairs are on the side of the road or in the auto zone parking lot.

  5. Fuel injection has been discussed here before, and a while back there was a guy machining injection systems that slid in where the diaphragms go, but he went out of business. A member here, Flying Fool, has the drawings. There's another member here that had a company from New York design a fuel injection system using a specially fabricated intake manifold and that system did use a sensor for ignition control. So, there's been actual projects using both sequential and batch injection. Both projects are going to cost you a lot of time and money, so you need to decide is it really worth it on a 25 to 30+ year-old bike...
That's just the thing I already have time and money in the bike with a sidecar mounted and new forks going on. I am considering doing a hybrid build with a vmx1200 head and cam for a bit more pulling power. And the efi has a cople of reasons behind it. One is to make cold starts easer when it's below freezing, 2nd part is that I have to have a project at all times. I would be making a custom manifold with bungs welded on the runners and a single throttle body.

  6. This is way above my pay grade, but here's a stab at it just because. The RSV ignition does have a wasted spark, and I imagine it fires on the exhaust stroke at the same degree as the power stroke. There'll be a few others that will blow this theory apart, but that OK..... :-) I don't know nuttin'.....
Thanks that's what I needed to know. Looks like I will be going with batch injection unless I can workout a cam angle sensor.

  7. looking at the wiring diagram it looks like each plug is fired interdependently. Is there still a wasted spark firing on the exhaust stroke or can I time valve events off of the ignition signal? I am wanting to install fuel injection and i will need a signal that can be tied directly to a cam event if I want to use sequential injection instead of batch injection.

  8. Glad to see you are on the way back.

With the battery in the stock location it is a common upgrade to use #4 AWG welding cables for the starter. If you are moving the battery to the rear, or even to the side car I would consider going up to #2 AWG welding wire.

OK silly side car question, I have often heard people refer to "flying the car". I have seen photos of the side car up off the ground in both right hand and left hand turns. Which if either is "correct" and is either considered the safe or proper way to take a fast corner?

My plan was to run a heavy cable from the right saddle bag to a stud where the battery is now then just a big frame ground for both.

It's not a stupid question "flying the chair" happens in turns towards the sidecar. The proper way to deal with this is accelerate gently and lean your body over the sidecar to help bring it down.

  9. Getting smooth airflow through the manifold in that small of space is the hard part. My guess is that you will loose some top end power.

But by all means go for it, Who knows your way might just be way better than my way? I am by no means an expert on fueling an engine.

If you do it please post progress pics.

Well first draft will be a single carb swap but make a 2nd so that I can get started on the efi version. The part that I am having issues with is that the math tells me I need between a 40mm and 41mm throttle body. I will be heading to the junk yard with a caliper at some point to get some ideas of what to pull off of.

  11. I bought my venture after a motorcycle wreck that almost took my leg and had me in physical therapy for almost a year. Even with all the PT I was not strong enough to ride the monster with my bum leg. Being in my early 20s I couldn't justify building a trike, this was my chance to build a sidecar. This year I put up the bike for the winter and was thinking I would do some of the upgrades I have been planing. This year I hope to build a new front end to make steering easier. I also want to give a single carb swap. There are also a few electric upgrades I would like to preform such as a new stereo and clean up the wiring.b1ecb1a3575a3e919265141a6042a832.jpg
