What's up guys! I usually read instead of posting. Everyone that chimes in usually post something I'd reply myself. In all the great info here, I haven't seen this posted yet. I just found out I have a California CARB (8th character in my VIN is "Y". "E" is 49 states) & I ordered it from a dealer in WI. My SVTC was the 331st unit. I received it April 30th. I called the Yamaha hotline and they told me there were both 49 state and CA. CARB makes. I was wondering who has the 49 state and who has CA. CARB they received outside of CA.? Is there a difference? If so what are they? I'll call the hotline again this morn to get more info and relay what info I received (had me on hold too long last time I called).

Mine was bought in Florida and it meets the California emmissions, I don't think Yamaha is building so called 49 state bike as there are about 5 to 7 other states that follow the California requirements.

Harley is the only manufacture that sells a bike without the California emissions garbage on them but if you live in one of the states that require the California emissions then you pay another I think it is $299 dollars for the bike.

I don't know how any manufacture can claim the 49 state bike deal anymore because there are 5 to 7 liberal states who follow California when it comes to emissions standards.

Harley does not even call theirs 49 state, they just add $299 to the price of the bike when CARB emissions are required. In Florida you don't have to pay for the CARB emissions garbage so the Harley does not come with the canister that is part of the CARB emissions.

My 2018 Yamaha Star Venture Transcontinental does have that evaporative emissions canister on the bike.

Even car manufactures quit trying to do a California emissions package and now everyone has to live with the CARB crap in their cars because it was not cost effective to have to build two different versions of the emissions for their cars. I see nothing in the service manual showing a none CARB certified emission system so that leads me to believe Yamaha has done the same as the vehicle manufactures and just build all their bikes to meet CARB emissions. Only one certification test has to be done that way saving money.

Just remember you are going to be talking to some person sitting behind a desk somewhere, I highly doubt you will be patched through to an actual engineer.

The only thing I can find is bike manufactures are calling bikes without the charcoal evaporative emissions canister 49 state bikes as California requires that canister.

Outside of that that there is no difference and like I said the Star Venture Transcontinental I bought in Florida has that charcoal evaporative emissions canister so it would be considered a California bike but I am think Yamaha has just simplified their assembly line and build them all with the canister now.

Maybe the Bike manufactures still make smaller bikes without a canister for states outside of California to keep cost down due to lower profit margins on the cheaper bikes but from what I can find in the service manual every Star Venture has the charcoal evaporative emissions canister making it meet CARB requirements.

I just thumbed through the manual again and I can't find anything showing a California emissions standard vs a 49 state emissions standard.

I bet you on every Star Venture the eighth digit in the VIN number is a Y.

That E in the VIN breakdown document that states: "E = 49 state Over 50cc w/Emissions" may be nothing more than for older bikes over 50cc that did not conform to California CARB emissions which means those bikes could not be sold new in California.

Remember that VIN breakdown chart covers a lot of years worth of Yamaha motorcycles as well as other vehicles and watercraft Yamaha makes.
