Venturous Randy Posted July 30, 2013 Share #2 Posted July 30, 2013 My 83 has 162,000+ miles and has a slight whine sometimes, which is typical of square cut gears. I do believe that by going to Shell Rotella T oil that it is noticeably quieter. RandyA
MiCarl Posted July 30, 2013 Share #3 Posted July 30, 2013 Primary gear noise is not speed dependent, it's RPM dependent. If it's the primary gear noise it'll do it in neutral. If the bike has to be in gear it'll be something in the drive line.
KIC Posted July 31, 2013 Share #4 Posted July 31, 2013 It might just be trying to imitate a 2nd Gen owner.... whine..whine..whine...usually at lower speeds since they don't go that fast to begin with...

easternrider Posted July 31, 2013 Share #6 Posted July 31, 2013 Not sure if it the same kind of "whine", but mine does it too. Mine is what I refer to a a "whistle trill". It sounds like someone is blowing lightly on a whistle, and no matter what gear I am in, it does it at 3000rpm.
KIC Posted July 31, 2013 Share #7 Posted July 31, 2013 One thing that I have had on several bikes is a "whine" that is caused by the tires. If you "swerve" back and forth, to where the tire is off of the center, the noise momentarily goes a way until you are back straight. Long shot, but mine does it now with the tires I have.
