M61A1MECH Posted June 5, 2013 #1 Posted June 5, 2013 This is not on a Venture but on a Stratoliner. I made up a harness complete with a powered Isolated and harness from seat area to rear fender tip for a fellow that is riding a Strat. He has just installed an audio system on he bike and claims that after he had he trailer harness installed he stated to hear engine ignition type noises in his headset. I am not sure how one would affect the other and was hoping that some electronic guru here could ofer suggestions about what may be going on or how to troubleshoot and fix the issue. I would like to help him, but I am lost as to what to tell him. Thanks for any ideas.
frankd Posted June 5, 2013 #2 Posted June 5, 2013 On my MKII First Gen., I had what sounded like ignition noise, but then I noticed when I stepped on the brakes, or turned on my driving lights, it went away and only came back when I brought the revs. up a bit. Then I noticed that when I used the turn signal, it would be there when the lamps were off, but gone when the lamps were on. I found that it really wasn't ignition noise even though it sounded like it was, but noise from the voltage regulator. Our voltage regulators work by firing what is called a triac that is connected across the stator windings, shorting out the stator when the battery voltage is high enough. This was making the noise. Now I'm not saying that this is definitely the problem, but that it's a possibility. Also, if the noise is there when playing a CD, it probably isn't ignition noise. Usually FM radio isn't affected by ignition noise either. See if your noise is possibly coming from the regulator instead of the ignition.
MiCarl Posted June 5, 2013 #3 Posted June 5, 2013 The isolator may be putting noise on the electrical system. When I installed a fancy license plate frame on SWMBO's Shadow it flooded the CB with noise. A filter on the power supply to the audio system is the answer. You can order from Sierra or get one from a car audio shop.
M61A1MECH Posted June 6, 2013 Author #4 Posted June 6, 2013 Frank Thanks for the input. MiCarl I had a similar thought, also suggested to the owner to stop by a good local Automotive type electrical shop for input on the noise and possible filters. Thanks I will pass both comments on to the owner.
