GolfVenture Posted September 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 15, 2011 Whats the proper way of removing the 4 retangular engine side covers. They are the ones that go right on the outside of each Cylinders. I have one of those hand held impact drivers but am a bit concerned about the transfer of the impact from the hammer to the cylinder walls. Yammer Dan Posted September 15, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 15, 2011 I broke one on a 84 using the impact. But I don't know what else you would do. Spray them good night before you try to remove them but I don't think much would get in there. Air impact would probally work better. The one I broke was with hammer and impact driver. GaryZ Posted September 15, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 15, 2011 My hammer-type impact worked on two different engines. Maybe Yammer used a bigger hammer . . .
MiCarl Posted September 15, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 15, 2011 The idea is to give the driver a few sharp strikes - not to hit it hard enough to drive it into the engine. I use a plastic mallet. You need to twist the thing so the body climbs up the ramp and hold it there. Then most of the impact goes into turning - not driving. If you bottom the body of the driver all the impact goes to pushing, not turning.
GolfVenture Posted September 15, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted September 15, 2011 Well I sprayed some penetrating spray and couldn't wait till tomorrow. I Taped lightly one way then taped lightly the other way. Kind of like doing head bolts. About the 3rd cycle I felt the screw give oh so slightly. I got them off. Thanks everyone.
