Seaking Posted June 3, 2010 #1 Posted June 3, 2010 hi folks.. On my recent 7400 mile trip we crossed into Oklahoma and onto a short portion of Route66.. neat.. then we looked at each other and decided that perhaps doing the Route66 run would be a good trip.. If I understand it correctly, the "route" starts in Santa Monica California and ends in Illinois? Has anyone done this trail before? If so, how many miles is it and how long does it approximately take to do it? We're not the type of riders who like to stop at all the tacky shops and tourist traps but like to ride and will pull over for what is worthwhile.. We're also not 'campers'.. being gentlemen of leisure, retired after 30 yrs of military commitment, we're happy to 'hotel' our way through road trips, thanks =) Nothing like a hot tub after 500 miles a day of slab riding.. If you've done the run and have any advice or suggestions, please drop me a line (email is fine).. we're starting to plan our next spring road trip early lol..
jlh3rd Posted June 3, 2010 #2 Posted June 3, 2010 the entire route is 2300 miles......the best, longest, continuous sections are in arizona and east california.....i have done the williams, az. to amboy,ca. section (it continues past amboy) and then picked it up in east la. to santa monica...that took us 14 hours.....and we had no rain.......the book i have says 8 days min. but if you do any type of sightseeing or late starter/ get lost ( and you will)..make it 16 days. for ex., it took me 5 plus hours to go just from east la. picking up 66 to santa monica.....and you will find that the road starts and stops, changes names, becomes frontage road, and goes thru lots of little and big towns...it ends in chicago...there isn't just one rt 66 either...there are older alignments scattered here and there........but half the fun is doing the research....so...get busy......you'll have a blast...
short-haul Posted June 3, 2010 #3 Posted June 3, 2010 I have run it from St Louis west to Santa Monica the best section I have been on is through Oklahoma Importation stops are blue wail, concrete totem poles,Darell Stare Birds Museum(claremore area), Round barn (OK City) 2 rout 66 Museum on the west side of the state. AZ: Petrified forest,Painted desert,Winslow(to see the girl in the flat bed Ford)on the east side of the state. The Grand canyon in the middle( stay is Williams and ride the train up if you have time). Pick up 66 outside of Williams and run to Kingman Stops at Grand Canon caves, Segulam,on the west side. There is also a 66 museum just out side of St Louis,MO. Texas has the Cadillac Ranch It is a great adventure trying to find the original road and lots of it is left, and if you look hard enough you will find the past.
Seaking Posted June 3, 2010 Author #4 Posted June 3, 2010 Sweet, thanks for the info.. it will sure be different for us as we tend to do a lot of slab riding.. but the back roads we did do on our recent trip were indeed quite enjoyable.. Cheers M8 We're looking at having the bikes flown from the east coast of Canada all the way down to California so we can ride back.. Harleys get trailered to and from.. Ventures go first class. =)
