See parts diagram - 29:Fuel Tank (I've attached a screen shot)

 

 

The actual part number for the fuel cock assembly (number 24 in the screen shot above) has been changed from 2GU-24500-01 in that screen shot image to the updated part number of 2GU-24500-02-00

Also, if changing out the assembly, you should also change out the two plate washers that seal the mounting screws to the tank. Mine were so brittle they would have disintegrated if I had tried to pry them from the old assembly for reuse. That part number is 90202-05187-00 and was number 29 in the screen shot given.

I finally drained my tank today and pulled the petcock off and sure enough,

the long stand pipe ("ON" position) was missing.

 

I took the tank off and tried to rattle the pipe to the filler hole but....it's like

it's not in there...so either it dissolved or it's stuck to the tank inside somewhere. lol

 

Anyway, my el cheapo fix was a trip to the hardware store for 3" of 1/4" copper tube,

which I flared slightly and squeezed into the hole. They sold the stuff by the foot and

just gave the tube to me because it wasn't worth ringing up. Woohoo!

The two part numbers you need to pick up are:

3AJ-24534-01 SEAL COCK and 3AC-24523-00 VALVE PACKING

There's also a base gasket 4X8-24512-00, but it may not be needed. Check the original first. They should run around $10 bucks total.

All the rubber was still in good shape. (bike has 15,000 miles on it)

 

Thanks for the part numbers though, I need to get a copy of the manual yet.

This is a good idea, but be careful as piecing it out can become spendy. Know that for less than $10 bucks more than the parts listed above, I bought new washer plates and the new petcock assembly. No plastic parts, now all metal.

Hi,

Just found out the hard way about no reserve on my 1996 Royal Star. Just bought it the other day and when the engine started to sputter, I just switched it to reserve.....guess what? So I noticed on the odometer it said 156 miles. So from now on when I see 125 miles, this old sailor will find the nearest gas station. Thanks for all the comments, they really opened my eyes to what is going on.

I got 170 out of mine (35.4mpg), you're super safe getting fuel at 125.
