@circa1968,,, I am almost positive that one of our club members actually offers a carb swap (you send him your carb bank and he sends you a completely rebuilt set ready to go) thing for club members here.  I cant imagine his prices being much lower than that 300 dollar range though as I know it is not cheap, just for parts, to go through for carbs BUT,, you might dig around and see if you could locate him just to find out if his service is still out there and the costs thereof. I am not sure if @skydoc_17 is the person I am thinking of,, for some reason I dont think so, but even if it is not Earl, he probably knows of whom I speak.  Also, @eusa1, the diamond cut guy just popped into my head, maybe he is who I am thinking of.. Either way,, I am sure one of these lop eared va,, fine gentlemen will be able to help you with my forgetful brain!!

I do know that buying used carbs off the internet can be a risky business and I would rather buy a rebuilt from a known source that risk a used one with the potential of having more problems that those you already have,, just a though..

Thanks for the plug, yes he reached out to me, my carbs are still available.

  2. Does anyone have the point to point measurements on the rear shock for a 2005 RSTD. I am trying to see if I can find a cheap shock to replace the old one anyone have any suggestion?

You would be the first of many that have searched.

I don’t have any used at the moment, but I know a member that does have.

send me a email at the address below.

  3. yamaha logo between the motorcycles and the musical item may appear the same, however there is a slight difference. see if you can figure out what it is .?

and Mitsubishi still makes fuel pumps for yamaha and did make every 1st and 2nd gen pump along with most every street bike pump in the yamaha lineup.

  4. the part numbers are for the same part, the number has been superseded and the price increase accordingly. there is no design change and as Mike G has stated they were cut on a different production lines.

Now that the rsv is no longer in production, we don't have the luxury of getting one pulled off the line to obtain the certain letter.

they produce them on an as needed back order basis now and the only way your going to locate a certain letter now, is to have a parts warehouse guy open each and every box and have a look at the backside of each gear ring or learn Japanese and find better contacts than i have .

    or find a used one.

  6. Good reason to use the petcock!

True as that may be, more times than not the crankcase being full of fuel upon trying to start can warn you of pending catastrophe and the same thing can happen while in flight going down the road and there is no warning other than the bang and the oil slick in front of the rear tire.

my 2003 rsv has 236,000 miles on it with no end in sight, i took it to Canada last July pulling a trailer at above average speeds and the deepest the motor has seen maintenance is valve cover gaskets and valve inspection with no adjustments.

i did not put as many miles on it this past year due to the purchase of 3 more royal stars. it's a sickness i know.

btw i have never shut my fuel off unless removing the tank for maintenance.

my advise would be to replace the needle and seats about every 7-10 years if it has regular use, and if it sits for long periods of time to use plenty of seafoam before you park it so it can get to the carbs and do some good.

all of the fuel that is in the carburetor can still leak into the cylinder while parked with the fuel turned off....

  7. i am to say the least a bit of a parts and bike collector of royal stars. and in all of the years i have been buying and selling 2nd gen royal stars the only reason i have sold/replaced the engines have all been for the same failure and the count is 6 and none while i have owned them.

they have all failed due to leaking needle & seat o-rings in the carbs letting fuel run into the cylinder and seeping past the rings into the crank case while parked in most cases.

then the owner finds it hard to start and ignores this if they do get it started and the motor hydro locks with fuel in an over full crank case and sometimes with fuel full on both sides of the piston.

look at your oil level and see if it grows to a higher level and buy new needles and seats or send me your carbs and i have two sets rebuilt and ready to swap.

  8. I'm working on a friend's 99 Royal Star XVZ13AT. I've checked for similar posts, but no answers found. The bike sat for a year and the carbs got clogged up so he asked me to clean them, it ran fine before he let it sit. I disassembled carbs and cleaned all the clogged ports and blew out all passages with air, replaced fuel inlet needles and reassembled with no problem. Spraying carb cleaner into carbs doesn't help it get past the stumble. Diaphrams all operate normal. Air filter is new, slides just start to flutter as throttle goes past 1/4. Any insight to similar problems would be appreciated. I'm going to start all over with cleaning the carbs. I've never seen a carb with O-rings under a main jet before. I have surely missed something but a little help would be nice. Thanks

While you have it apart... replace the needles and seats part #4km-14107-15 you will need 4.

The o rings and the needle tip dry out and are the death of this engine.

while you had the rack apart to get one of the float pins out, it is very likely that you got the throttle position sensor out of proper position. $.02

    report back with 12 bucks
