  1. Hey all, just received a new dunlop e3 that I ordered from riders domain. The manufacturer date is 3 years old...according to them Dunlop says it's still ....Would you run it or ship it back?

I would have no problem running them. I go through a set or 2 every year.

  2. About 3 weeks ago, I spent a week in Minnesota at our semi-annual sales meeting. I didn't want to go because I had to leave the day after the funeral services for my brother in law and I really felt that I needed to stay home with Eileen. It was not really an option though. I got to Minnesota on Monday and then on Tuesday night, I finally made the decision that I had been struggling with for a while. I tendered my resignation on Tuesday night and told them that I would work until the first of March. I have been with the company for 14 years and they truly are a great company to work for. After 25 years of constant travel though, I had just lost my excitement for the job. As most of you know, I had been running my brother in laws stairlift business for a little over a year so have a good idea about the potential of the business.

So, I am now self-employed. It was a big and scary step but I feel that I made the right decision. I have never been a person that wanted to own my own business but I think I am going to enjoy it. Though I am technically still working for my old company until March 2nd, I have a little over 3 weeks vacation coming so am starting it next Friday so I'm pretty much done with it. Eileen was encouraging me to resign and her first question was "why are you staying until March?"

The last year has been brutal trying to juggle two full-time jobs and to be honest, I'm so business right now with the stairlift business that I don't know how I managed to do anything else. So I would like to say that I have semi-retired but I don't think that is going to be the case. I guess I've just changed jobs. The only thing that is a bit scary is that I am giving up the company's contribution to my medical insurance. I will stay on it for the next 18 months through the Cobra plan but it's expensive and I can only keep it for 18 months. Then I will have to find something else. Except for that, I feel pretty comfortable with my decision.

Congratulations and best wishes for you Freebird!

  3. How many miles did you get out of the 230's?

Back in 2012 I ran some 230's on my 06 RSTD and got only 5400 miles out of the rear tire. Most of them were riding 2 up. Sometime after that I went to the dark side and had over 18000 miles on that tire ($50) that still looked new when I sold the bike. I've moved away from the dark side with my "new" 2012 RSV but who knows when I might go back...

  4. Gotta spoon another tire before,, Lord willing and the creek over at Orlins that stands betweens us and Minnesota dont rise, hitting the trail to Sturgis.. I REALLY like these Shinko 230's that @videoarizona turned us all onto = great tires and I just wore out my second one.. Started the season back in June with a new Kenda pre-Americade and now having thoughts of testing out one of the Shinko 777's as also mentioned by Vaz just for giggles.. Just jumped on Ebay,, as with the 230's I purchased on there = no load rating stated.. The 230's are 77 rated and speed rated to to 149 (V). I noticed the 777's have the lower speed rating of 130 mph (H) as most of the tires for our 1st Gens are.. Not a problem at all except I am wondering if they have lower load rating too? Anyone spooned on the 777 yet,, David?

Thanks ya bunch a lop eared varmints - in advance..

  5. Has anyone put 3.5" or larger risers on a 2nd Gen RSV? The 1 1/2" risers just aren't doing it for me. I am not sure how my plan wll work, but I am considering adding some 3.5" or 4.5" risers turned up toward the dash. I know I will need to replace my hoses and wires. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to find the extended wires and hoses?

I am 6'5" and want my arms more level instead of going so far down to the grips. I had planned on keeping the stock bars.

Thanks in advance for any and all info.

I am considering 1 1/2 inch risers for my 2nd gen if you decide to sell yours. I'm 6' 3" and am not quite where I want to be with the handlebars. I rode an RSTD for over 6 years before I got this bike and loved the bars on it. Not sure how the RSTD bars would work on the RSV...

  6. I'll have a look around, I'm using 7 now on my desktop and it rocks. XP was a good OS as I recall. I'm fairly sure I have a copy but doesnt it have some online reg/activation hassle you have to go through?

I just bought a laptop with win10 on it and I lack the English words to describe how much I dislike that and how alarming the lack of privacy is, even after locking it down. I'm planning to do a duel boot system with Linux, which is probably a good option for you, and it's free. There are several different distributions, some very similar to windows I understand.

I'll have a peek for my XP disk and if I find it you can have it. I'll update this evening.

Stardock Software makes a Windows 10 start menu program that will give you the old familiar Windows 7 GUI on Windows 10. You can try it for free and if you like it's only $4.95. I tried it for 5 minutes before I made the purchase! Link here http://www.stardock.com/products/start10/. It makes a world of difference for an old guy trying to run a new OS.😃

  7. Went for a short ride to visit mom and dad. Got home and removed the trunk lid, sanded and am repainting it. Had a nasty scratch right in the middle of it that's driving me bonkers😃 2 coats on now and gonna apply at least one more before I lay some clear. This is my first attempt at something like this so wish me luck!

  8. Well, I got it working but I'm not pleased how I did it...

Will have to do later as I'm headed to Colorado Saturday morning and don't have time to fool with it anymore...

Hooked it up the way It should be and was getting feed back with no brake lights and the running lights were actually the brake lights:

    Bike - Converter - Device

battery ground - white - Ground

Blue - Brown - Tail light

Brown - Yellow - Left turn

    Yellow - Red - Brake

Green - Green - Right turn

Hooked it up like this and it worked:

    Bike - Converter - Device

battery ground - white - Ground

Blue - Red - Tail light

Brown - Yellow - Left turn

    Yellow - Brown - Brake

Green - Green - Right turn

Believe the converter is either wired wrong internally or shorted, but it work this way...

Works perfectly on bunkhouse camper that Jeff wired up a couple years ago.

works on the luggage rack I built.

Will hook bunkhouse up to the Toyota tomorrow...:whistling:

Pretty confident it will work on the Toyota...

May get a powered converter as I believe its a better fix.

Your modification worked perfectly for me. I was about to pull my hair out because the "right" way would not work. Thanks!

  9. Hey Tommy,

    Wonderful!....look forward to the pictures

When you say an RSV bracket, are you talking about the support system that connects to the bike itself and then the trunk attaches to it?

I have the quick release back rest and luggage rack....so you didn't cut the back rest off and then mount the trunk to the luggage rack?

I had considered just cutting the back rest off at the luggage rack and attempting to mount the trunk to the luggage rack...but I think that would put the trunk up too high....plus I don't want to destroy the back rest.

Also, who did your painting?....maybe I should just bring my bike to you and let you make mine match???

    Thanks,

    Phil

I thought about cutting the back rest but I ended up just buying the RSV trunk mount and selling my backrest to help off set expenses. Don Ray in Boaz painted the trunk and fairing. Did a great job too. Pricey! About $1100... Looks just like factory though.

  10. Hi Phil,

I'll get you some pictures together soon. For my trunk I bought the trunk bracket for a RSV from Pinwall Cycles on eBay and also some trunk lights from another vendor. I bought the RSV seat and pillion from Pinwall and I got a bracket/adapter to allow me to mount RSV pillion to RSTD. I bought a third party HD style trunk and then bought HD passenger backrest and luggage rack for it. I bought a Wide Open Customs fairing and had it all painted and striped OEM... Looks pretty nice I think. I found some first gen RoyalStar badges and centered one on the front of the fairing and the rear of the trunk which gave it a nice "OEM" look. I've gotten many compliments ranging from little old ladies to die hard HD folk telling me what a beautiful machine it is. I've got 60,000 miles on it right now and am looking to get to 100,000 in the not to distant future. Still runs great with no major problems. I'll try to get some pictures up later today or this evening.

  11. Thanks for the comments. The bike is pretty much finished now but I really don't have any really good pictures of the finished product. I've got one that I made last summer but since this was made I've put my stock pipes back on. I had forgotten how nice they sound. When I was a kid I had a 66 Chevy II SS with a custom built 327... White of course. The first time I rode this RSTD I felt like I was sitting on the hood of that ol' Chevy II, just enjoying the breeze and the responsiveness... The sound of the exhaust, the power... AWESOME! Anyway, here's a pic. I'll try to get a few more when the weather breaks.
