  1. You can be quickest in the west loosening the drain plug and then trying to get it back in but you are still going to have a mess. When I purchased my "other bike"; don't want to start a war here, it was quite a bit overfilled. Here's how I lowered the level without pulling the drain plug. I had a length of small id hose maybe 3/8 id. I simply opened the fill plug, lowered the hose down into the oil, placed a recovery can right next to the right side of the motor, and sucked the hose full almost to where it entered my mouth. Be careful here but oil doesn't taste that bad anyway. Once the hose was full or almost full, I placed the other end of the hose in the can and with my breath, forced the hose to drain out. I did that a few times and lowered the oil level in my ????? to an appropriate level. Worked for me.

     

    Might not be a bad idea to use a clear tube

  2. The opening title to this thread pretty much says it all..Installed leveling links....WOW, a new bike..

     

    I went to Home Depot and bought a 36" piece of 1 1/4W X 1/4 thick steel for $7.48. My retired neighbor used to build race engines and has every tool imaginable..When I told him what I was trying to do he was only too eager to help..After we cut the strap into two 7 15/16 pieces the rest was easy..( I have enough steel left over to do another set ) A couple of clamps, some measurement markings, a drill press and viola, it was done. I painted the two new links and when they dried I stuck them in. I had a little trouble getting the old bolts out and the new ones in but not that big a deal. I didn't remove any valves or tire and it was still easy to install..Getting the nut back on the upper bolt was the toughest challenge but after a few cuss words it threaded..

     

    I took the bike out for a test run and the difference is noticeable immediately...I'm with all the other testimonials, it makes steering a lot lot easier, especially a low speeds and in the twisties..

  3. I've been following this thread regarding leveling links. I never heard of them but couldn't ignore the many testimonials to their worthiness. I've ridden 1st gens for about 20 years and just recently purchased a new '09 RSV. That was the first thing I noticed with my new bike was the awkwardness in turns and at low speeds.

     

    After reading this thread I went out to my bike to look for those links which I quickly found. It looks real simple to remove and replace the links and to make them as well. A couple of metal straps and a drill should do it which kind of bothers me. Many a time when I thought something to be simple or easy its turned into a nightmare, but this MAY be different...Tomorrow I'm off to buy the metal straps and I'll report back on how it went..

  4. FWIW, my 55W fog lights would cause the voltage to drop way down as well at idle. It would come back up slowly, the quick fix was to turn the fogs of, watch the voltage come up to normal and turn them back on! (couple of seconds)

    Similiar to this situation, I wired an on/off switch to my headlight. You'd be surprised how much voltage it takes..Anytime I've shut off the headlight you can see the needle on the volt guage increase, especially at slower speeds.

  5. I need help dealing with my CLASS system....

     

    When I turn the bike on ACC the Class monitor shows 88, then it cycles to 0, then the E1 appears...it will stay on E1 for about 5 seconds then you'll hear a double "click" where the compressor is and the cycle will start over...back to 88 then to 0 then to E1..repeat etc..If I try to use the system it immediately goes to E1

     

    Any idea what it can be and how to fix...Thanks in advance

  6. I have an 85 Venture Royale I am having trouble with the rear brake. The calipers seem to be fine, but no matter how many times I pump the brake pedal I can get a hard pedal and the brakes to work. I have bleed the brakes thoroughly, but no stiff pedal or breaks. Don't see any leaks. Would this be the rear master cylinder? Thanks for any tips.

     

    When was the last time the rear caliper was rebuilt?

    Three daughters (with first wife)..45, 44 and my baby is 39. Married three times but been with my current wife for over 30 years..(We dated for 10 yrs and have been married for over 20..)

    Saying I've been married 3 times sounds bad so I like to say that I was married once with 2 upgrades....:crackup: That sounds better

  8. I've used Castrol GTX 20/50 for the last 20 years in both my motorcycles. I've never had a oil related issue..

    That being said, you'll get as many different oil suggestions as members that add to this post...There have been several of these oil and tire posts over the years and you'll be correct to come away thinking there are several good brands of just about anything involving motorcycles....(EG..some like Coke, some like Pepsi) myself, I prefer blondes.:innocent:

  9. Ok so I will make everyone feel old no matter how old you are. I am turning 27 next week and have owned my 2nd gen midnight 'Old No 7' Jack Daniels for almost 3 threes years come may. I love my bike every time I throw my leg over the saddle.

     

    Everyone Ride Safe and enjoy the freedom and wind in your hair (if y'all have it still, LOL :rotfl:)

     

    Good for you kid.....I'm 66 yrs old and unfortunately my motorcycle is the only thing I'm throwing a leg over these days...:hihi:

  10. I'm going to try to change the front tire myself on my 86VR....40 years ago I used to work part time at Sears changing tires so I'm no stranger to the process..

     

    Has anyone used a "C" clamp to break the bead and large screwdrivers to remove the tire from the rim?..It seems easy at face value but I'd like to hear from people that have actually done it...

     

    BTW: I figured diluted liquid soap and a paint brush ought to work when replacing the tire to get the bead slippery enough to fit the tire, with a little persuasion, over the rim...

  11. I have noticed a gas smell on my 84 Venture Royale and couldn;t figure out where it was coming from. I did notice that under the seat it looked like four overflow tubes? and while the bike was in idle gas was dripping from one of them? ANy ideas what could be causing that? I would sure appreciate any insight.

    That just happened to me..(gas dripping from an overflow tube)....I did what Dave and Mike suggested that you do, and the problem was fixed....
