  1. Sorry I missed you, have been traveling to Scottsbluff several times the last 2 years to watch my Daugther on the WNCC Softball team. Many times rode my RSV. Last year was her last year there and now she's off to Northwestern Oklahoma. I still plan on attending a couple of games next year and visiting with Coach Winn. I'll make sure to remember to PM you with details of dates and times.

    Hello Everyone: I have made so many on line friends from this site in a very short time. If you ever find your way passing through Western Nebraska perhaps on the way to other destinations such as Colorado mountains, Yellowstone in Wyoming or the Black Hills of SD. Besure to let us know you are coming. I would love to meet some of my fellow owners and riders. We are planning our annual trip to the Black Hills of SD the week before Sturgis.   2. I plan on being in Durango, Colorado this weekend 6-19/20-2010.

    Going to the Bar D Chuckwagon Saturday evening for dinner.

    Will be riding a Silver '08 RSV, don't know where I will be staying in Durango.

    Riding up from Albuquerque on Saturday and returning on Sunday taking senic routes.

    If anyone is in the area I'll be looking.

    Hope to run into a Venture member.

  3. If your around Albuquerque the weekend of the 19th, I would like to meet up if I'm not working. Might be able to ride a distance with you. Really doesn't seem you will have a lot of time. Amarillo to the Grand canyon is a good hard day 600+ miles. Might be able to show you a nicer shorter route off the interstate. Give me a call when you are in Amarillo my # is on my profile. Not many Venture memebers around here, so the wife and I ride alot by ourselves, or a few Harley and Honda riders we know.

  4. Sorry, I missed you.

    Was there Sunday, and saw a few RSV's. Mostly parked.

    Rode up from Albuquerque to the Vietnam Memorial in Angel Fire to meet with a few Vet friends. Around noon I rode over to Red River and totally forgot about the rally until I was deceding into town. They estimated 10,000+ bikes and some nice venders.

    Great weather all day and the ride home, Sunday evening was warm.

    Hope you had a great time, I usually find that I am the only RSV rider showing up at events in New Mexico. Have been trying to get the word out, just don't see many.

  5. Having riden for many years across the country on many different brand bikes, I have found livining at 5000 feet and riding in higher elevations 86 to 88 octane provides excellent performance. Then at lower elevation around sea level the 86 to 88 octane (sometimes) I have noticed a drop in performance. So at lower elevations around sea level I use the higher octance 90 +, to achive the same performace. Gas milage stays around 40 mpg. Don't remember the theroy here, but know that at sea level there is a reason fuel needs higher octance to achive the same performance as lower octane fuel at higher elevations. If you notice the same vehicle in California requires high octance to keep from pinging, but if you live in a higher elevation with the same vehicle the a lower octance is recommended.

  6. HELP HELP I have a tri-wing trike kit and am having rear end problems..figure it would be cheaper to buy a rebuild than to have this one rebuilt...been on the web looking for one but no luck.....is there any out there anywhere???..Thank You for any advise...:crying:

     

    Look for an early 70's Ford Pinto they used a 7 1/2. If my memory serves me some of the 70's Ford mustang II's also had a 7 1/2. Junk Yard maybe, very popular rear end for dirt track racing out this way and getting hard to find in good shape. Good luck

  7. I'm just the opposite. Wife has been riding on the back since we meet 32 years ago.

    Our honeymoon was a 3 !/2 week trip around the country. She loves to ride and always aked to take the bike out to dinner, short evening rides. I do ride a little different when she's on the back, larger safety distances, little slowers speeds, but she has a very good since of how to be a passenger and just sit back and I'll do all the leaning with the bike. A very good partnership, that let's me go on too many to count 3 and 6 week rides as long as she can fly in some where and ride for her vacation time of 2 weeks and the fly back home. She also makes it easy when I can't find a buddy wanting to ride she is ready to go. She will do 600 mile days and if she gets tired she will nap like a baby in a car seat.

    Together we have enjoyed so much of this country on a bike, that I don't have to tell her about it causing any jealous thoughts. We have had some close calls, and I pray a lot to have safe rides for all on bikes.

    But I know what many of you are describing. The thought that your riding could hurt someone you care about very much, and we have talked about that. Her responce has always been she has confidence in my abilities and I have never done things with her that were careless to scare or impress her, just go responcible riding.

    Some of her confort comes from me having taken motorcycle safety courses, and having gone through police motorcycle training and ridden a few years on the city streets.

    Like many here can tell you a companion that likes or loves to ride as much as you do adds a lot to the biking or touring experience.

  8. you may want to take the front of the fairing off and check the audio plugs.

    there are several. I had the same problem with my '08 a few days after picking it up.

    found the plugs are like the multi-pin gannon plugs i was familiar with in the service, but these do not have a tighting ring. so i unplugged them and used a small amount of dielectric grease on the pins and pressed the sides a little with my fingers to tighten up the two end when plugged back together and wrapped the joint with a little electrical tape.

    everything was back to normal and have put 18,000 mi. with no more issues. Yamaha knows about the harness issue and was willing to order new ones to replace them. But so far happy with what worked.

  9. I use the ST7317 long filter so far I been very pleased with it. I have cut several open after each oil change so far everything inside held up really good, unlike fram which seems to split and fall apart over time... I used Wix 51358 & napa 1358 filter which are both the same filter just different labeling,good filter never had any problems using it on my cycles . But I stayed with ST7317 filter just as good and half the price too. cant beat that..

     

    I've been using, NAPA GOLD, CARQUEST BLUE, and WIX filters for years on everything I own. Motorcycles, Cars, Trucks, Heavy Equipment, Tractors, Compressors, Mowers, Hydraulics, you name it. Never had any problems with these as they are all made by Wix.

    It's all about being confortable with what I use if I'm not using the manufacture's filter.

    While under warranty I use what is recommended by the MFG, after that it's up to me.

    AS often as most of change oil we should never have an oil filter problem, I still remember

    using a roll of toilet paper as the filter for a 50 Chev. pickup.

  10. Don't know how much time you have, but see your on Interstate alot.

    If you have time, I would suggest staying on I-15 past Salt Lake, Utah and catching state hwy 17 at Anderson Junction, Utah to hwy 9 east at La Verkin, takes you through Zion NP and to hwy 89 at Carmel Junction. Ride 89 to Jacob Lake then hwy 67 the 45 miles in and out to see the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Lodge. Very nice ride through the forest. Leaving the North Rim catch hwy 89 again and go east through/to Marble Canyon drive down a paved road after crossing the suspension bridge to see where they launch the rafts for river trips down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. Anyway back to hwy 89 and it wraps around to Paige AZ and Lake Powell.

    On hwy 89 you will intersect with hwy 160 across and through the Indian Reservation and catch up to you origional route near Mesa Verde NP, also a should see, then a short

    ride to Durango. If you do dicide to cross the reservation from Paige AZ, keep your gas tank topped off. This area is beautiful in it's own desiclite way.

    Have ridden all these rodes and often go out of my way to ride then when I'm heading

    to the Northwest.

     

    Let me know the dates you will be around Durango, if it includes a weekend, my wife and I would ride up for some ice cream. Sorry I don't have a lot of time during the summer as I'm a one man operation at work and weekends is all I have Customers that make orders that have to be shipped same day during the week.   11. I must agree the Timberline is great. Riding and camping for 30 years. I started with the 4 man and in the last few years have been using the 6 man. Both tents can be set up free standing if you have to, and after a few uses takes less that 5 minutes. Two up, I like the extra room and I can stand inside and move around. Traveling, I pack two full size Cabela self inflating mats in a single roll bag, the tent and 2 medium weight sleeping bags. Granted not much room for extras without the trailer, but can do laundry often.

     

    I like the Eureka A-framed Timberline series but they aint cheap. Super easy to setup, and the less expensive ones ( not the Outfitters) use thinner floor material and pack small and light. They use hollow aluminum poles which are lighter than the fiberglass poles used in most tents under $100. Unless you think you will actually use it, I dont recommend the vestibule, just the simple included rainfly will do. I have the 2XT, which includes the vestibule, but I never use it. Two campers might be more likely to need it.

     

    Dome tents are ok, but you end up with some unused floor space, which is fine if your not packing that unused floor space on a bike. And most dome tents have screens that have no flaps to cover them, rendering them quite chilly on cool mornings. The Eurekas have solid but breathable sides and flaps that can close up completely and limit the cool air, if needed. But they also have screens at both ends that can be left open for airflow when you need that.

     

    The little 2 man Eureka packs down less than 6 pounds. If you and the guest are on the much larger side of average, this one wont be big enough, unless your both very friendly at night! Get the 4 man version in that case.

    Just a side note: Packing for 2 up and including camping gear, such as a tent, sleeping bags, air mattress and cooler, along with all the clothes and gear for 2, makes you realize just how valuable a trailer can be. At the very least, look in to a hitch-mount rack to carry some of it, down low behind you. Packing heavy items vertically on the RSV is asking for trouble.

  12. I have had luck on tight hoses, by pushing the hose on or towards the nipple which loosens the hose from the nipple then the hose can be twisted and removed. Pops the hose loose.

    Any tips on how to remove a stuck vacuum hose without damaging it?

     

    The rear vacuum hose (on the nipple to sync the carbs) is being really stubborn and doesn't want to come off. I tried rotating the hose on the nipple with a pair of pliers, which usually works to break hoses free, but the pliers started digging into the outside of the hose, and I don't want to damage the hose or put too much force and break off the nipple. I tried pushing it back (hard, which has also worked for me in the past on other vehicles) with a flat screwdriver levered on the fake cooling fins, but it just doesn't want to move.

     

    On larger hoses, like radiators, I can slide a thin object in and around the mating surfaces, but there's no room to do that here. I was thinking of trying to let wd40 penetrate for a while, but thought I'd throw it out here to see if there's a simple trick I'm missing.

     

    The vacuum cap came right off. Just the hose is being stubborn.

  13. FROM WHAT I REMEMBER THIS TRUCK HAS A REV. LIMITER THAT CAUSES THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN OR FIRE IRRATICALY TO KEEP THE ENGINE FROM BLOWING UP. I would talk to the dealer to locate this piece and see if there is a test to see if it is working properly.

    It may have shifted, gotten dirty, gotten loose, may be old and just wearing out, causing the engine to think it is running at too high an rpm causing to shut down.

     

    (Another thing you might check is the speed sensor pick up on the drive shaft may be out of time with the sensor give false info. to the computer causing this. Very rare for the speed sensor cause the problem you have described.

    Just a thought.

     

     

     

     

     

    Her is a new one that I can not figure out

     

    I have a 96 GMC K1500 P/U, pretty much loaded with all of the toys.

    Whenever the engine hits 4000 rpm the alternator shuts off. The voltage drops from the normal 14.2 down to 11.5 and all of the lights dim noticeably and the truck starts to run rough. As soon as the rpm drop back under 4K the voltage comes back, The voltage changes like you threw a switch, it does not come in and out gradually.

    This voltage drop is being measured on both the dash gauge and a separate digital voltmeter.

    It does not matter if I am driving or parked, it still does this right around 4K rpm.

    It has been doing this for a couple of years now. I have since replaced both the alternator and the battery (yes they were bad) but that had no effect on this problem.

     

    Any ideas???

     

    As long as I stay under 4k the charging system is fine.

    Typically the only time I do hit 4K is when I pull out to pass a slowpoke on the highway and the trans downshifts.

  14. Saturday we removed the tank badge from Roxie, my '06 RTSD. I like how sleek it made her look. Someone said she looks like a panther. Mysterious, menacing, and sexy, that's her.

    The most glaring thing to change now is the hinges. I know I can buy OEM chrome inserts, but I have restrained myself from adding flashy stuff. She is a midnight bike, and IMO is meant to be dark and threatening. Chrome there would be out of character.

    What are some options for replacing the hinge inserts with gloss black. Or better, like the original but saying Roxie instead of Tour Deluxe?

    I like the look, nice and clean.

    If it were mine I'd look for some place that does chrome and see if they can black chrome the hinges. Won't be as dark, but would look nice and custom.

  15. i realize this is subject to varied points of view, but perhaps there will be a consensus on a few states which are favorites for motorcycling in. Please explain why you think the states you chose are the best and include any evidence or photo's to support your valued opinions!

    I wonder if its the polarized sunglasses that work or just the tint?

    I can see where the polarizing would take the bouncing light away, just never ever thought of it.

    The glasses in the early mid 70's were just plain jane.

    Now I use perscription polarizing and it works very well.

    I've used the cheapest plastic safety glasses and they work.

  17. SEEING IN THE RAIN

    I have used this many times and it works well.

    As a young patrolman, one night it was raining so hard you couldn't make out the front of the car I was driving. I was riding with an Old Salt 35 yrs. ago and he suggested I put on my sunglasses. WHOW! All of the sudden the visibilty in front of my windshield was perfectly clear. Almost as if there was no rain. You can see the rain bouncing off the road, it even works with the spray or kickup from semi's and cars. You will see the drops of rain on the windshield but NOT the sheet of rain falling. I have worn my sunglasses even at night to see in the rain and disperse the blinding headlights of people that drive in the rain with their brights on. It works, but you do loose some visibility. Ever since being told, I've always carried dark glasses when I travel, now I use a pair of flip-ups. Any dark glasses will work, just try it. REMEMBER DRIVING AT NIGHT WITH SUNGLASSES IS AGAINST THE LAW IN MOST STATES, BUT THIS MAY SAVE YOU FROM PULLING OVER AND GETTING HIT BY SOMEONE ELSE THAT CAN NOT SEE IN THE RAIN UNTIL YOU GET TO A SAFE PLACE TO STOP.

    REMEMBER TO NEVER RIDE IN THE RAIN USING YOUR CRUISE CONTROL MC OR CAGE.

    Pass this on to all your friends and family, IT SHOULD BE TAUGHT IN DRIVER'S ED CLASSES.

  18. Thats cool. I though about making a single person sleeper, so, I can stop anywhere. on the road. 4' wide and 8 ft', long with a crank up, top, to expand the height.

    I have been looking at several car top carriers that are for carrying ski's or long items to make a single sleeper. Searching the web, there are several from $200 to $600 and weight approx. 30#+. Would work great for single sleepers.

  19. It's a theft if the bike taken was not used as collateral for the loan on the Venture.

    She needs to call the Police and report what happened. The Police will not persue criminal charges if the bike is returned but need too have this documented. There maybe an opportunity for the friend to pressure the the loan company to back off awhile since their agent the repo man stole his property. These things can be quite up setting and stressful. An attorney might be able to do wonders with this in a civil suit.$$ It wouldn't bring alot of $ but could help in srinking his loan.

  20. In all my travels I also carry and extra key around my neck. The lonely credit card and a few bucks are kept locked up hidden in one of my saddle bags or trunk. If I loose my main key the spare from around my neck will give me access to my card and cash. This way I don't have to ever worry about something happening to my card or spare cash. Only thing is on my 2 and 3 week trips the spare cash usually disapears by the time I get back home.

  21. check out www.zcoil.com these are great shoes once you get used to them. A little different and take getting used to the way they position your walk, stance. Can be a little hazardous if you are up and down a latter alot or have to lift items from the floor.

    I have several pairs and they are great, been using them for 15+ yrs. They look strange but there are covered heel versions. I'm 6'2' 280# on concrete 10 to 15 hrs. a day in a warehouse and they sure help me. It took me about 2 to 3 weeks to get used to the stance but I forced myself not to throw them away untill I gave them a day for every dollar they cost. Before I knew it, I never wanted to take them off.

  22. I'm checking it breakfast, lunch and before I leave work, then maybe 3 or 4 more times during the day on average. Though I haven't met anyone on here personally, I feel like I have from this site. Like reading about other's difficulties makes mine seem trivial. Also I can see the smiling face of a new Venture owner, and feel the excitment of their travels though these posts. But most importantly even after riding for 40 yrs. I learn from those that post questions and those that post answers.

  23. Take a 150 mile radius from Durango and you have some of the best motorcycle Mtn riding in the US. The reason they call it the Million Dollar Hwy is, during construction they used tailings from the mines in the area as road base and they estimates the tailings still had a million dollars of un-collected ore. To really see the beauty of this area you need to get off road on the jeep and dirt bike trails, traveling to some of the old mining sites that still stand.

  24. If you haven't yet talked to an attorney, look in the phone book for a workman's comp. attorney. They are usually paid through workmans comp. and it should not cost you anything when it is a legitimate claim with doctors involved. In NM the attorney fees do not decrease the anoumt of settlement. Results can still take time, but an attorney may be able to get your workman comp. payments started again. Remember, workmans comp. insurance cost to an employeer are figured yr. to yr. based on the inheriat work dangers and then the claims filed. Employer's workmans comp. insurers play had ball to keep the cost/payments down to be competive and not loose business. Sorry you having such a had time, Good Luck, and don't let them ware you out.

  25. take 1/2" ribbon about 10" long tape them all around and under the faring, around the side covers and crank it up to hiway speed. You'll see where the buffetting is coming from. This works. It could be the visor on your helmet is catching the air and making it seem worse. I have done this on a lot of my bikes before I start modifying or cutting up good parts.
