  1. take a 12 or 16 oz. bottle of TECHRON and put it in a full tank of gas and run the heck out of it for about 150 mi. bet that does the trick.

     

     

     

     

    Just bought a 2000 Venture with 24,500 miles on her. I drove the bike from Knoxville,Tn. to Williamsburg,va. about 540 miles and averaged 41 MPG.

    I like the comfort and "stuff" radio//cruise etc, and the performance etc.

    The bike had sat for 7 months and I ran 6oz each of seafoam through 2 tanks of gas which helped the low speed idle some but:

    THE BIKE WILL NOT IDLE OFF OF CHOKE.

     

    This gets hairy in traffic or slowing down on a ramp. Actually I am getting pretty good at left hand choke control (manually)--in seriousness this is dangrerous.

    The stealer says it just needs a fuel service check up which is $320.00 plus parts--thank you very much.

     

    I can wrench a little and from the threads I have read so far It sounds like I should do plugs 1st which I would do anyway.The owners manual looks a little vaque.

    The general condidtion of the bike is good but needs a real goof clean up.

    Out on the road at 70 she seemed in her element it just doen not want to idle off choke.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    This is my 10th Bike in 6 years I think I found a keeper.

  2. I'm 6'2" and wife 5'7" my 08 venture has the stock windshield, on a calm day, wife has almost no disconfort from the air movement. In a light rain both of us stay dry at speeds above 60mph. In a down pour or moderate rain it's suit up time. According to the wife the RSV is a much more confortable ride and more protection from the elements than the Gold Wing did.

    And see likes having a clearer view over my helment.

  3. I'm sure there is a store that sells letter jackets for the local high schools and sews on the patches. I use a local store here, she will even make patches or letters and charges $5 if you have one patch or more sewn on. Then i'll tip her a few bucks for doing it while I wait. Good luck

     

     

    I want to have some patches sewn on our vests, but do not want to have the pockets sewn shut. Anyone know where I can find someone in the San Antonio area that might possess such skills?
  4. many of your gun manufactures are building an assault style rifles in 9mm, 40mm and 45 calibers and there are hundreds of hand guns in the same. think your going to have a problem finding a hand gun in the hi power rifle calibers, that would be useful for personal protection. if you can check out the hi point 995ts in 9mm. not much on looks but fun to shoot and very, very reliable with a life time warranty. then find the 9mm pistol you like and ammo is reasonable.

     

     

    I'm not very gun savvy, and was wondering if there is a handgun and rifle other than a 22 that can use the same ammo. I'd like to get something before the right is taken away!

  5. I used to do dry wall work years ago but i don't think much has changed. Dry wall work is usually bid by the sq. ft. in the 70' it was around 18 cents a sq. ft. and 25 cents a sq ft if you also bed and textured. Today i would call a dry wall company and see what they charge to do the amount of sq. feet you had done. give you a guide to make an offer to your friend that would be reasonable. remember it cost more for small areas over doing a complete house.

    sure you will do fine if he is a friend.

     

    I hired a friend to do some dry wall for me this winter in his spare time. He is a rascal and will only give me his hours and not his hourly rate. He is an engineer who normally does large project management of hospitals colleges etc. but is between jobs right now. Its a little bit like hiring a doctor to give first aid. I'd like to pay him a fair amount but not engineer rates. What would a fair amount per hour be in a small town in Midwest Iowa?

  6. I did a 3 week trip on my 2008 RSV with 2 friends on HD Ultra's and at the end of each day if we went 300 or 600 miles I felt good and would look for local points of interest to visit. They were always making comments of how stiff and tired they were and often passed on visiting the POI's. All in all we had a great trip totaling 8000 miles.

    Don't think you will have any problems and I sure all of you will enjoy your trip. Nothing better than taking a trip like that on a motorcycle any motorcycle.

     

     

     

     

    I have a 99 RSV with 02 California sidecar, new to me as of April 2011

    The bike had 14,000 miles when I bought it, and only 16,000 now.

     

    Friends are planning a 2 week trip to Arizona this summer, about 5,000 +/- miles, and I would really like to join them. They are driving new HD's.

     

    I plan on making several trips before this to get used to distance driving. (more than the 1 to 3 hour jaunts I've been on so far)

     

    So the question is...........and I understand there are many variables..........do you think the bike will make it? :confused07:

  7. you will be spending a lot of money, more than you would to buy a go kart kit and build it with your son. There is so much on the lawn mower you won't use, if you want it to be like a go kart.

    The transmission usless unless you want to go slow.

    Frame is to heavy and bulky, changing the engine to the rear is major work.

    I turned a riding lawn mower into a dragster then to a racer for a while, wasn't as much fun so I gave it to a couple of neighbor kids a few years back.

    A friend of mine races go karts competivily and have ride a couple of his. Have to say nothing like doing 50, 60 mph 3 inches off the ground on dirt and sliding around the track. Really made me want one untill I realised it would cut a lot into my MC riding time. So I bought a 67 VW Bug and plan to build a Baja so I can still drive it on the street.

    Best thing about your project is the time you will spend with your son, inspiring him to

    build with his hands.

  8. Well, sent out an email to 30 local riders to join in on a New Years Day ride.

    Sunday moring 11 bikes showed up. Weather was great in the high 40's.

    Left Albuquerque and road to Santa Fe for lunch and conversation. Returned

    via The East side of the Sandia Mtns, through Cerrillos, Madrid (Wild Hogs Movie Fame)

    and Golden. Stopped several times to enjoy the New Year and great weather

    we are having after a couple of 1 and 2 foot snows. Glad to be able to start the new year

    off right as we try to get together at least one weekend a month to ride in the area.

    Can see a great riding season on the horizon this summer. Hope to post, up coming

    weekend trips, so anyone in the area can join in.

  9. Before i try to remove a phillips head screw, I try to see if I can tighten it a bit.

    If the screw moves at all tightening, the screw will usually break free as I go to loosen it.

    If it doesn't brake free, easily, I go for the impact driver right away so I don't damage the screw head. Don't know what it is with people that think tighter is better, then snap @#$%^&. When I was younger I thought tighter was better and got pretty good with extractors and left hand drill bits. LOL, when I think of the time I spent repairing stripped

    screws and twisted off bolts.

  10. The truth be known. Mine would like a full set of chrome or black metal speaker covers.

    Looked everywhere to no avail, so I might take it upon myself to make these a custom project. If you apply any pressure to the plastic speaker vent-ribs, they break or crack.

    I'd be happy.

     

    Mine wants a new air horn, vented wind screen and new mirrors. Letter sent to Santa last night!

  11. Another security alarm provider is the Brinks Company.

    Know several in the rural area I live that use them and are happy with their service.

    Like everything they do a little or a lot, and their prices vary. Would be another one to get a bid from and check out.

     

     

     

    I have a question for the masses, as I know we have a greatly diversified group of folks here. The new house that Lonna and I are moving into, has in the past been burglarized and they stole copper wire and such. We are going to install an alarm system as the owners of whom we are going to purchase it from in a couple of years, have agreed to split the install cost in half with us.

     

     

    We checked into ADT, and I guess they think their stuff and product is gold. Price was not what I would have thought and they were very pushy to have it installed immediately. There also was a quote from FrontPoint security, lots of the bells and whistles like ADT, but more reasonably priced.

     

    My question for y'all is, have any of you dealt with this FrontPoint and or other security companies, and what insight can you pass on to me about the industry for those of you in the know?

  12. Semis passing you. Simply...your speedometer is very optomistic.As with most bikes. But your mileage is good ...considering you are possibly overloading your bike. EX: Mine 85-90mph constant across Nebraska pulling a trailer w/gear=#200# = 28mpg. Crossed the state in about 7 hours w/stops.ALL Your MPGS are the same as mine. So we are both in the "same boat". But I have never seen 50mpg in the 20+ years I have owner this 87VR. Guess it's the bigger carbs and a true 90+hp at the rear wheel.:missingtooth:

    I sure it's the 30 to 50 mph speed limit for most of the national park roads and not being in a hurry that gets me that milage. It's the only time the RSV has been able to do it and has only happened a few times.

  13. I track my fuel quite a bite, and compare speed to fuel milage.

    Have found my 2008 RSV get 40 to 42 mpg at a average 65 mph two up on flat land or mountains.

    At 70 to 77 mph average my mpg drops to 37 to 39, 2 up flat or mountain.

    At 80 to 85 mph average my mpg drops to 35, 2 up flat or mountain.

    Now here is the puzzle, I have had to make a couple of long interstate runs of 1000 to 2000 miles and was cooking at between 80 and 90 mph and mpg dropped to and average 27 mpg.

    I thought running that fast I would be out in front of everyone on the interstate, but I still had semi's passing me and several like I was the one standing still.

    I do feel after 50,000 miles I have a good gauge for how far I'll get at the speeds I usually travel.

    Always keep the carbs tuned and this pattern continues to repeat it's self.

    Pulling my trailer with gear, total weight approx 350#, 2 up another 400#s I stay around 70 mph and get an average 39 mpg.

    Have gotten 50 mph riding the Blue Ridge Pkwy and a few other long senic runs.

    Wow, check this out. Maybe you have already seen this stuff, but I just now saw it for the first time. There are so many uses it could be used for in everyday motorcycling. This video shows using it on electronics, but other videos show using it on shoes and clothing, the possabilities seem endless. :cool10:

  15. I must agree with Freebird. Since joining I have met great indivuals here, gotten very helpful infornation on Yamaha MC's and other bikes. As an example, I ride with a group that rides just about every make and model motorcycle, it was the post ref. Harley Recall brake swith that comes to mind. I informed all the Harley riders of this recall and none of them were aware. Each has gotten the service work done and a couple were asked how they found out about the recall since they had not received a notice letter from Harley. To which the said, from a friend on the Venturerider forum. It should make everyone here FEEL GOOD that a motorcycle or more importantly a LIFE might be or have been saved from information found on this forum. All of us may move on to another brand MC at some time or another, but this forum is a place if you have a question you will more likely find the right answer. Not to mention the great people on here and the enjoyment of reading the daily post, even if you never say a thing. Good luck with your new ride.

    I've never ridden the Victory but I sat on one a few months back and it sure felt good. I also liked the style of the bike. I hope that it brings you many miles of happiness. I wish that you would stay with us though. You have been a long time supporter and friend of VentureRider.org and I would sure hate to see you go. It is always a dilemma that I struggle with when members move to other bikes and we lose their participation here. I have thought about it a lot over the years and just don't have a good solution for it. The fact is, this site was created to promote and support the Venture and Royal Stars and that is the strength of the site. When several members switched to the Goldwing, I finally created an area for it but it has been less than successful. The fact is, there are a number of good websites for the Goldwing where people can find much more information about that bike. I had hoped that there would be more input into that area and we could slowly build on that but it just hasn't happened. I know of other clubs that have started out dedicated to a certain make/model and then later tried to move to an "all bikes" format and it ended up hurting them in the end. The Venture Touring Society is a good example. When Yamaha discontinued the Venture in 1993, the VTS later changed their name to the Motorcycle Touring Association and tried to transition itself to an "all bikes" format. Though they are still around at this time, they are a shadow of their former self and though have tried a number of different things, they have just never regained the momentum to attract new members that they once had. I would be very hesitant to ever go down that path. I hope that you will stay and you know that we don't care what you ride but unless the membership here someday speaks very loudly that they want the format changed, this site will likely remain dedicated the the Venture and Royal Star bikes.

     

    OK...sorry...I know that I got long winded there but you just caused me to finally comment on an issue that I have struggled with for a long time.

     

    As usual, comments on this subject are welcome.

    have ordered a couple pairs from them.

    cheap so you really don't have to worry about breaking them.

    I have my good pair of dark and clear RX Okley's but don't like wearing them

    or carrying them on long trips, because I usually will loose or break a pair.

    So I invested in 3 aux. pairs from Zenni for my motorcycle travels and it works out great.

    Started using a pair at work si I don't break my good pair.

    They have an assortment of styles.

Have you hots ready and sit close, hold her hand and say, "Remember When" you won't get her to shut up but you will be reflecting on all the good things of the past 30, and there will be some funny stuff, I'm sure you don't want anyone else to here about. It dosesn't cost anything to be happy.

     

    Man I got our 30 year wedding anniversary coming up in a few days. This economy sucks been a lousy year. Does anybody know how to put the Romantic touches on a Hot Dog dinner for two?:fingers-crossed-emo
  18. I like the way the shifter looks, cut down.

    I do use the heel shifter about 50% of the time.

    I wouldn't cut it down even if I didn't use it.

    Had a HD years ago and the toe shifter broke and was glad it had a heel shifter.

    I was able to flip it over the shifter, heel to front and continue my trip with the heel pad as the toe pad.

    Haven't had my RSV off but, looks like it would work the same.

  19. My wife and I travel quite a bit mc camping, short over night and long rides of weeks at a time.

    over night to a week I carry enough to get by, bags and a tent, change of clothes, couple extra shirts. If needed I will do laundry.

    On my extented trips I take clothes that I will be replacing. old socks, underware, shirts pants, whatever that is needed. As I travel I just throw away the old which lightens my load and gives me a little room for collecting shirts as I travel. For underware and socks, I stop and buy a new pack as needed.

    I usually eat at mom and pops, but when I know I'm going to a remote camp, I'll pick up a sub sandwick and a drink to enjoy the evening in camp. Always have an extra few bottles of water to brush my teeth and get a GI bath. Look for camps that have faculities to shower daily, but have had to go a day without.

    I have found this works well for me, as I like to ride and sight see, not setting and breaking down camp.

    Love to ride and stay around small towns( not tourist traps), walking main street in the evening can be interesting as people are very friendly. I'll stop and do the tourist traps during the day as I'm passing through.

    These things have worked for us since the 1970's

     

     

    So, I've learned what to pack and how to pack from the great posts on this site, but the better half is still looking for a little more area. On one of my rides I saw a HD with a small strap on piece of luggage that hooked to the saddlebag rails. It was about a 16x6X4 high.

    I thought it might be a nice place to put glasses, gloves, sun tan lotion and such.

    Any body seen such a thing, or know where to find it?

  20. Have ridden that hwy twice this summer. Beautiful ride along the Gunnison and just before you get to Montrose (15 miles east) you need to take a hour or two and ride into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Very impressive views of a smaller verison of the Grand Canyon. For sure if you ride to Montrose go south through Quray, and Silverton Colorado. I spend most of my free weekends rideing in Colorado and there are not any bad roads except the Interstates.

  21. I have a use the traveler. Have had it 2 yrs. and still holds up. Like it for the coverage, I can have a bag on the luggage rack and put my helments on the seats and no one knows anthing is there. After it has been used in the sun it discolors a bit. I use scotch guard once in awhile to keep it water repellant.

     

    Looking at M/C 1/2 covers and have my eye on these two so far

    Both are sold by Motorcycle Super Store. The price looks not bad and the reviews are pretty positive. Has any one had any experience with these or the store itself. Have any Canadian members purchased from this company and what was your experience in dealing with them with regards to cross border shipping.

  22. if all is in parallel, sounds like it might be a bad ground or bad connection going to ground. easy to check and correct.

     

     

     

     

    The 5 wire to 4 wire adapter that I installed has been working fine with the H/F LED light kit I put on the H/F tag along, earlier this year. This week end I added red LEDs high on the rear of the trailer for additional tail/turn/brake lights. I also added red and amber LEDs on the corners. They are hooked up with the tail light circuit and work fine. My problem is with the brake/turn circuit. The new red tail/brake/turn LEDs are wired in parallel to the original tail lights. When I turn the ignition on, the low intensity for the original tail lights and the new addition tail lights come on low intensity as they should. If I press either brake pedal, the existing tail lights go to high intensity and the new ones do to. If I turn on either turn signal the proper original turn signal blinks as it is suppose to, but the "added" light does not. If while the turn signal is blinking I press either brake, both original brake lights go to high intensity and the blinking stops, although there is a slight intensity oscillation in both sides.

    The converter I have is not a "Hoppy" brand. I'm wonder if The additional LEDs have exceeded the capacity of the adapter? I got this one at Ace Hardware. Where have any of you found a "Hoppy"? I need to get this fixed BEFORE Thursday, as that is when we need to head out for Vogel. And if this wasn't enough, while changing the oil this afternoon I noticed an oil drop on the bottom of the rear shock!!!:headache:
