I'll be darned...the exact same spot we had our picture taken in Lukenbach a month or so ago...
-
can you post a picture of the tire and the gash?
if so, place a coin to give a visual reference to the depth.
that will make it easier for comments to be given.
Me posting a picture is akin to the average person climbing Mt Hood.....if you catch my drift....
-
Sorry for not answering sooner. I have been running.
The "gash" is maybe 1" long. It is on the sidewall proper. It does say 3 ply sidewall.
I can pull the rubber back with a pick but it's real hard to tell exactly how deep it is. 3/16" is my best guess.
I had it on the lift and may just pull the tire to get a real good look at it.
Thanks for the responses. especially fond of the carnage and messy cleanup post. Always entertaining first thing in the morning:moon:

I know I can be annoying at times, but in general I kind of like me, so my answer to that one has to be "yes".
I really (secretly) know that but I keep thinking I can get rid of the wife....but I kinda like me too!
Of course I'm still waitng for the tire expert to say "heck no, it's fine."
I guess I can look at the bright side and get to try the C.T. sitting in my shop a little sooner.....

I had contacted him about a hitch a month or two ago and never heard back?

I had the bike on the lift to do some repairs and noticed a small 3/16" deep slice/gash in the sidewall. of my Elite II.
I recently replaced a virtually new Avon due to a nail that friends convinced me to replace...
Dang, this is getting old.
It says the sidewall is 3 plies.
Still lots of tread on this sucker.
I know I should probably replace it and be safe but are the wife and I really worth the expense?
I'm in a dither with this......thoughts!

I use one of those diesel/kerosene type rocket heaters....I love it cause I hate the cold.
It is a little noisy so I just sing to myself:Im not listening to

On mine, it's the tires. A result of too many straight roads. A hundred miles in the mountains at it'll go away.
I'll second that. Had an emergency road trip tire change and could only get a 404m (rear)......3200 miles later I had to buy new.
Too light a tire for sure.

I will see if any interest in making this an annual 4 day Mini Rally..there is just too much too see and do on a weekend trip. Mid November is about the best time to visit, cool mornings, upper 40s, highs in upper 60s,low 70s. If you are interested in riding out there I do it several times thru out the year but as I say IF there is interest I will start work on a yearly meet. Brian Mentioned earlier about Sturgis before the Sturgis rally BUT its just too far for alot of our folks here in Texas where Big Bend can be done easily in a days ride. ALL comments WELCOME AND this would hopefully draw in a few of our Canadian friends that want one last ride before "Winterizing" Tom
Ohhh, our youngest will be off to college and we will be free birds....
I agree with at least 4 days. There is a lot to see and do.
Really a cool place.
Thanks for your efforts Tom, I for one will be watching and planning.

I sure would be interested in a trip out there? Any thoughts on possible dates?
I have hiked and biked out there a number of times and always find the area fascinating.
The wife has missed all previous trips but seems eager to make one soon.
We sure would consider a trip out there!!

As sailor said, I have known a few that have complained of this after switching oils....
-
If my son is lurking here...I will ask him to take note.

Give a buzz if you get close to my area Blanco,Tx..Doorway to the hill country..We will be getting ready for our Texas Meet in Big Bend but will be at the house from about 2PM on Thursday till early Friday AM. Tom
I'll be darned. We did travel right through Blanco and down the River Road towards Lukenbach. Will keep a visit in mind for the next trip.

Oddly enough, mine broke about a year ago. I have ridden without them since.
Tomorrow I head to the 3 sisters for a ride with the newly repaired (at last) deflectors which I put on tonight.
I will be curious to feel the difference after so long without them.

Yeh, I am gonna suck it up and pay the $'s....like you, I don't have a lot of faith in the dealerships.....they swore they will have the bike ready for my trip. Maybe they'll give me a loaner if they don't:icon_smile_question

Yamaha wants $450-$550 for job...they even say they can have it done in time for my trip.....hmmm, this is getting interesting....
-
Great info and many thanks to you all.
Heres my big question...a week from Thursday we have planned a long awaited trip with my brother and son to west Texas.
Does anyone see a "real" concern with taking the bike on this trip? I don't see being able to get the work done by then.
-
Tire seems fine. I will take a closer look.
Is bearings the big messy and rotten job I have heard about?
Ouch.....not liking the sounds of this.

I couldn't find anything on this in the searches I did....so here goes.
I have noticed at slow speeds where my steering lightly locks. It is in the straight position and is a noticeable "slot" where it requires more pressure to turn it. It is getting to be annoying at slow speeds. Took a weekend trip and it seemed worse this past weekend.
I have tightened the steering head a while back and the bounce when it's in the air is still on the loose side.
Any info would be appreciated.

I have vacation rental homes and they are here too. They try every angle.

Rusty, congrats...which did you get. I almost ordered today but I ran out of time.
This isn't a bad looking unit for about the same price with the free shipping.

Yeh, I could see the back problems with a wider lift. This particular one has the removeable sides which go from 4' to 24" . "I think" that would be a relatively comfortable width for a Venture?
-
I would think with a 2' wide deck and a Venture on it you would not be required to bend too much?
I could be wrong? I had thought about that cause my lowerr back gets sore easily.
I figured the width plus being able to lower and raise would make standing comfortable????
Hmmm, good point though!

That thought ran through my mind too. I need to get to Alabama and pick up Ecks trailer and I could continue on from there....Heck, could go to Mass and visit the ex wife!!
Tire Change

Guess I'll revive an older thread with a question that is somewhat related.
I pulled my tire and had a new one mounted today. When taking the old tire off I noticed the nut on the gear side was fairly loose....okay. I installed the new tire and remounted and noticed if I torqued the nut down it would actually stop the tire from spinning....this seems real strage to me. I had to back it off.
There are no parts missing or left off.
Is this normal?
