  1. Planning a trip to New England in mid July and want to take the bikes. Not interested in riding there from Florida ( the wife certainly isn't) plus prefer to maximize time in New England area. Have looked into the Amtrak Autotrain, but that is getting expensive with a sleeper room for our dates to the point that airfare and MC shipping would/may be close the same money. Plus with the Amtrak still need to drive the bike from DC to NH (and Back).

Anyone here shipped their bikes from Florida to NE or thereabouts or can otherwise recommend a good MC shipping company? Would be shipping two bikes there and back, my RSTD and my buddy's LC1500.

    Thank You in Advance,

  2. I found it got expensive to pay Manuel to hold the throttle for me plus having to bring him with me everywhere I go. I got an RSTD with the electronic cruise control and now the wife can go with me instead.

    Sorry, couldn't pass that up.....

  3. LA Pryor "wildhair" is in springfield, which is pretty close to Joplin. If he's feeling well he may make a run over there for you. Send him a PM.

Thank You, If the guy ever responds I will do that. Don't understand people who want to sell things, then 1. Don't post a phone number and 2. Don't respond to email.

Hope to find one closer, still looking.

  4. I thought I might might post this here in case someone owns one or knows someone who does. I'm looking for a 2006 Vento V-Thunder XL Touring motorcycle. Been doing the Nationwide craigslist search on google, etc. Ideally need a black 2006, another color may be ok, but it must have the hard bags, backrest, crash, bar and windshield. The only one I have found so far with all of these except the color is this one.

    http://joplin.craigslist.org/mcy/1975237746.html

It is however, a little far from me. I can't get a reply from the guy on email, and if I start talking about shipping it that sends off the scam alert and some people just want a local deal. If I can ever get a reply from the guy and you live near near Joplin (Groveland), Oklahoma and can check that bike out, let me know.

So if you have one, or know of one, Please PM me or call (number in profile) and I can give you all the details.

    Thank You,

  5. Union already made concessions to keep HD jobs in Milwaukee from going to Mexico. I think that article was posted up here a while back. Its a publicly traded company, shareholders want ROI and that means improving the bottom line.

Besides there is already a trained work force is India. They have been building Royal Enfields there for about the last 30 odd years, and since Harley's and the Royal Enfield are technologically similar, no significant retraining or education of the work force will be necessary.....

  6. It is sickening to click on Texas and see NO real gas within hundreds of miles from Houston. I hope it isn't a comprehensive list, but I fear it is.

Check Marina's around you, that where most of it is distributed. There are no "on road" pumps at regular fuel stations around here with non-ethanol, but a couple of the marina's have pumps you can pull up to. $3.50 gallon for fuel labeled 90 Octane Recreational. So I wonder if its for boats, is it free of road taxes like Ag diesel? All the one's on the list for my area are Marina's.

So as not to Hijack. I use the Stabil Blue on a regular basis in my bike. If anything to protect from any moisture the alcohol in the fuel absorbs between rides. Probably adds some lubricity to the fuel which can't hurt either. And if for some reason, 1 week turns into three or four of not riding, the fuel is stabilized.

  7. ddog was nickname growing up in LA (Lower Alabama=Pensacola, Fl). We were using first initial (d for Derrek) + dog or dog as a nickname suffix long before it became popular with the rap crowd. ddog was taken when I was signing up, a name I used on another forum I was active in for a number of years when I had a diesel, So RSTDdog it was.

Both ddog and RSTDdog were taken when I tried to get a FL personalized tag for the motorcycle, so others have thought of it as well.

  8. Cold front coming this weekend. Going to be 65 degrees when I get up in the morning. Might have to put the windshield on to go to breakfast. Have finally been able to start wearing my spiffy leather jacket again... Actually just starting to be nice riding weather here. Not a fan of June, July, August riding down here.

  9. captjoe,

You can file a small notch or drill a small hole in the metal frame large enough to push the float pin through with out splitting the carbs off the rack. Whoever worked on mine before me that put the float bowls on backwards had done that, but only on one side (left same side bowls were switched on),

You definitely want to pull and inspect all four.

I had some of the green o rings that came with a large R134A set for the last car I worked on the AC. There were some in there just larger than the original, but made for a snug fit. Not sure what they are made of.

Replacing those orings and resetting the float heights cured a pop on decel issue I was having. Runs good and I haven't even checked the carb sync since having it apart.

  10. Without knowing the composition of, and performance specifications met by, "motorcycle oils", it is not possible to compare the ROTELLA T products performance to them.

Coming from the "Shell Tech Expert", this statement bothers me a little. I guess the "expert" doesn't know what JASO MA means and that its printed right on the Rotella bottle (Syn and Dino). You would think he would know that....I'm guessing this is the Shell Marketing Expert.

I'm using the Synthetic Rotella T 5w 40. Seems to be fine. Didn't notice any substantive difference between that and the Valvoline Motorcycle Specific 20w50 Dino which coincidentally also says JASO MA on the bottle. But with out knowing the composition of, and performance specifications met by , "motorcycle oils", its not possible to compare the Rotella T products performance to the Valvoline. But since they both meet JASO MA, they must have some additives in common......

  11. Just curious, but when you had the carbs apart did you pull out the float valve seat (the brass part) and inspect the o-rings around the float seat??

When I had mine apart to put the float bowls back in the right spot the result of someone else being in there before me (be sure you pay attention to this detail since the bowls will interchange, but you won't be able to access the drains after the carbs are back on), I noticed on the two left side carbs, white residue and oxidation on the aluminum of the carburetor where the float seat goes and some pitting deterioration of the orings corresponding to the oxidation. I replaced all four of the orings on the brass seat, and polished the aluminum in the carb body where the float seat installs and put it all back together.

You can adjust the floats all you want, but if the o-rings around the float seat are compromised, fuel will seep past that point overfilling the carburetor. Something to check while your in there. You can clean the screens for the float valve at the same time.

  12. I see that you "topped it off", If the fluid was low, check the pads, might be time for that as well.

Mighty vac method should work fine. A couple things to remember is the mighty vac will suck air in around the bleeder threads. While this will create bubbles in the mighty vac line, it does not mean you have air in the system.

When using a mighty vac you want to open the valve pretty good 1/2-3/4 turn from seated and keep a steady vacuum on it. Always close the bleeder while there is still vacuum on it.

After I get the fluid nice and clear with the mighty vac, I always give it a couple of old school pump and bleeds with the pedal.

  13. Unfortunately, the use of ethanol fuel blends have little to do with energy independence or air quality. If those were the goals, why not E100. Dragsters run well on it, wouldn't be hard to engineer autos to do the same.

The MTBE replacement argument is interesting since the MTBE that pollutes groundwater (as well as benzene, xylene, naphthalene and other petroleum constituents still present in gasoline) is from Leaking Underground Storage Tanks. So ethanol leaking from a UST doesn't pollute groundwater? Its been shown to cause problems/deterioration in custom built in Fiberglass fuel tanks in boats. It won't cause problems in Fiberglass USTs?

    I have to stop now.

  14. Now how about some help with where to get engine gaurds and how to post the pix.

    :farmer:

For Pictures, when you reply to this post or start a new thread

1.scroll down past the box where you type and the smiley Icons, past the submit button and under that is the Box for Additional Options.

2.You'll see a smaller box that says attach files with a gray button that says Manage Attachments. Click the Manage Attachments button and you get a pop up window (be sure your pop up blocker allows pop ups from Venturerider.org) >the pop up window has boxes with a Browse button next to them.

3.Click the browse button to navigate to the folder on your computer where your new bike pictures are, select the image from the browse window and click open. You can browse and click in 10 pictures at a time.

4.Then click the upload button in the bottom right of the Manage Attachments window. It will upload the picture(s). Once its uploaded you will see the file name or names in the Manage Attachments under Current attachments You may need to reduce the image sizes, if its too big it wont go.

If you did it right your posts will have pictures in it like this.

Good luck with the new bike. Viragos are nice.

  15. Went on line to look up the part and it still didn't tell me the size.

With "most" yamaha fastener part numbers like the one below (this is not the Shifter Bolt part number BTW) you can get the diameter and length form the part number.

97024-06020-00 BOLT, the middle 5 digits give you the diameter and length, in this instance the its 6mm by 20mm long. This happens to be the part number for the pinch bolt for the shifter linkage.

The part number for the bolt you lost however doesn't appear to follow the same convention as "most"

90149-06280-00 SCREW This is the part number for the shifter bolt that falls out. You can still tell from the first two of the middle 5 digits that its 6mm diameter, but its clearly NOT 280mm long. 28mm is also too long I think from what I can remember.

There is however an extra one of these on your bike. Each side cover has two similar (but not identical based on part number) fasteners. The one toward the rear holds the side cover on but the forward fastener is there just for decoration but un-threads out of the cover. Others have posted this before as an on road fix.I figured it was worth repeating here and mentioning to use the one that doesn't actually hold the cover on.

  16. Here is a recent RSTD thread with additional input (mine and others) including some maintenance questions.

    http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=53557

With respect to your first gen question, I have never owned one, but have had occasion to ride one when I worked at the motorcycle shop years ago. If top heavy is a concern for you, its my recollection its going to be similar to the ST and Vstrom. That being said, with proper mods (fork brace, progressive springs) its probably still one of the fastest, best handling, full dress tour bikes you can buy.

Most all of the engine, suspension, and drive line parts are still available, but most if not all of the ancillary components you will need to find used. Going through the carbs on one thats been sitting can be an expensive propositon if it needs the vacuum pistons replaced. Last made in 1993 (Rare if you can find one) the newest one you'll find will be 17 years old.

    Good luck and Welcome!

  17. It looks nice. Has alot of the features the new Stratoliner deluxe should have had (cruise, bagger duals).

Not sure I would rush out and replace my RSTD with one. I am debating the Strat deluxe fairing if I think I can get it to fit the RSTD. Been at the dealer eyeballing it. its more swept back than the harley style batwings so it should look better with the RSTD bars. Its available as an accessory item now and so is the radio package. A little pricey, but its available in Raven, so no painting for me.

I saw a STratoliner deluxe with lowers on it at Indy at the yamaha tent. The lowers are an accessory but they aren't showing up yet on the website. I would wait to see where Yamaha heads. I am starting to think/agree with some of the earlier posts that the next Venture is going to be a full dress Strat with cruise, radio, trunk, bagger duals etc. Economy of scale. My bet will be called Stratoliner Venture. Who knows.... It would be great if they built something with the new Vmax motor, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

Anyway, so much for the HIjacking. I think Kawasaki hit the feature option package right on. I need passenger options so it doesn't work for me.

  18. Star- Thanks for the price info on the Stock rack.

    Solo-

The naturbar bracket places the trunk to high in my opinion. I prefer to keep the weight down as low as possible. I have a tour pack from an Ultra classic and am placing it at the same height relative to the rear seat as it is on the Ultra. This is also roughly the same height as the Venture trunk. I try to keep any mods as close to the stock design as possible to reduce any potential ill effects on handling. The rack on the rear of my bike now (pic) is almost perfect for height and placement, but its not stout enough, needs more support. The base of the naturebar bracket should be at or near the top of the pillion seat mount bolt by my estimation for more stock trunk height.

  19. Bj, thanks for the link - I'm waiting on a call back from the dealer. That may be the one!

Dave and Derrek, Great info - thanks very much. I like that long valve check interval (FYI Its a shim motor, so when the time comes you will possibly need access to the shims), and actually do like the fact that the bike has carbs. I've been using a Morgan Carbtune on the Conc for awhile and think it'll work just fine on the RSTD (The Morgan is popular here and used by many). Does it have a spin on oil filter too? (YES!) The gear whine shouldn't bother me all that much as the valvetrain racket on the Conc will make a non owner think there's something wrong with the engine. I'm an "old school" kinda guy in that I like to be able to work on things myself and when something on the bike takes a dump - not needing a computer to diagnose it is a plus. Same with my boat engines - 325 horse 350 ci , carbureted chevy's - no smog control, no computers - engines the way they were meant to be. Just like wrenching when I was a teenager.

I have given some thought to the RSTD's lack of lean angle - I currently live on Long Island (NY) where that's not a problem but am retiring and moving to Georgia next Fall. I figure I'll make the RSTD my 2 up and commuter bike and keep Connie to thrash about in the twisties. I love taking her down the Blue Ridge and thru the GSMNP along with the Dragon and every other squiggly line I can find on the map down there. One thing that I'll need to get used to is not being able to stand in the saddle like I can on the Concours, I wonder if the weight on my lower back will turn out to be a problem?? (If you cut off the heel shifter, you can get both your feet (balls of your feet) on the rear of the floor boards, they are not quite under you, but you can elevate from there. I'm 6'2", and when I ride solo I put my heels back on the passenger floor boards, to change the weight position on the seat. A driver backrest is also a nice addition to consider)

I'm really leaning towards a new one for 2 reasons - first is of course the warranty 5 yrs!( great heads up btw regarding the in service date). I thought the Connie's was good at 3! Number 2 is, I like to know that it was broken in and taken care of properly, this way if a problem pops up down the road I'll know the history and not wonder if it was a lack of maintenance snafu.(There are some low mileage used RSTD listed in the classified here as well. I bought mine used down here from a Craigslist ad. The original owner was from Minnesota and had bought it new at Larsen's of all places.)

Thanks again for the replies - if you guys are indicative of the caliber of person on this site and riding these bikes - I may have found someplace as good as the COG and am looking forward to joining you all.

    Best regards,

    Sean B.

    Your Welcome! Good Luck! RSTDdog

  20. Being you are a First generation Concours owner (an 04 concours is like a ZG1100 A-18 or something like that), you'll appreciate the technology or lack there-of in the RSTD.

This motor, like the Concours, is virtually unchanged in its base form since it was introduced in 1984, withthe exception of tuning and power variation between the models it is used in and a bump in displacement from 1200 to 1300 cc (original 1st gen venture and Vmax, and 2nd gen venture and and Royal Stars)

You can synchronize the carburetors without pulling the fuel tank which is nice and is generally easy to maintain.

The only known issue is the gear whine. Intrinsic to the straight cut gears used in this engine, some have it worse than others. Search here and the 2nd gen forum for more discussion on this topic than you can stand.

I can tell you my only regret (my prior bike having been an ST1100ABS TC) is that there is no sport aspect to his bike at all. Coming off a Concours, you will be scraping the floor boards. Knock 10-20mph of the speed of your favorite road on the Connie depending on your ability to tolerate your feet being pushed on accompanied by scraping sounds.

That being said, the fact I live in Florida makes this an ideal bike since the majority of the curves are the interstate on ramps. Passenger comfort was also a consideration for me and the looks and cruise control won me over hands down. I am mostly about the touring these days, but a recent trip to indy via North Georgia, Deals gap, the Skyway and other roads had me wanting more sport on ocassion.

Unless you are dead set on a brand new one, there are a bunch of these out there used, with low miles (less than 5K miles) in the 5-8k range depending on the year/miles. The value on these unfortunately tanks pretty badly. If you are going to put 100k miles on it, than that doesn't really matter. There has been an 06 midnight with 9k miles for sale by me on craigslist for about 6 months now. He started at 8K and is now down to $6900 (Midnights are black with extra chrome from the factory, The S models also have extra chrome).

If you want a new one to get the 5 year warranty, be sure that the in-service date with Yamaha Corporate is the day you take delivery. Sometimes a dealer will buy (or have an employee buy) left over bikes in inventory in order to take advantage of any incentives before they expire. The problem is the warranty clock starts ticking at this point and the "new leftover" may not have 5 years warranty remaining. If the dealer is ethical he should advise you if this has occurred.

Good luck and be sure and post back what ever you decide. What you ride doesn't matter around here.
