  1. Haven't been on much I see you ordered one. Yes I'm happy with it. I ordered mine with the uprated spring. I installed like it came out of the box. Recently turned the Compression/rebound adjuster in CW 1/4 turn (adjustment is combined). Its good one and two up so far and I haven't added any more preload. That being said I would ride solo with the OEM air shock set at 45 psi. To me it seemed like the best value. I like to give all the options so people can research more if they want.

When installing pay attention that you install it with the compression rebound adjuster (allen head screw on bottom) pointing to the right. That way its on the up hill side of the bike when on the side stand. Just Makes it easier to get to.

  2. Where is the best price on carb joints.......Mine don't seem to be leaking when I spray starting fluid but the sure look like they should be leaking.

May be the better question is why do you think you need carb joints (other than the cracks)? What prompted you to start looking? Running poorly? Lean misfire? Plug color white or light gray indicating a lean condition?

  3. Mine was leaking oil but still holding air just fine at 23K miles. I replaced with a Hagon.

Replacement options are Hagon, Made In england, California distributor 2year warranty, rebuildable, 399 and 469 with HD spring includes Shipping from Hagon LLC in CA.

OEM yamaha through discount online retailers around 475 shipped (boats.net) Only option if you want to keep air adjustment.

YSS, shipping seems iffy from the distributor from some reports. You'll get it, just may take a while. Similar to slightly higher pricing to Hagon. Made in Thailand?? or parts of it.

Works Performance 799.00 several here have that one as well and like it. Only 1 year warranty. Based on a straight comparison of phots of both products,I could not justify in my mind why its $400 more than a part made in England, likewise couldn't justify spending $400 more either. That being said, I have never ridden a bike with one to compare.

A more recent thread on the options here http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=75298

  4. Look at what similar bikes are selling for in your area Cycle Trader, Craigslist, etc. Check Completed Listings on ebay (bikes that actually sold). You are always better off if you don't Have to sell and can project that during the sale. That being said, Its a tough sale because you need a buyer with cash or the creditworthiness to get a signature loan for that amount (and willing to go into debt for a 10 year old bike with no warranty). If you can wait for the right buyer who has been shopping these bikes, you should get be able to get what its worth to you. Tax refunds are coming and now is a good time to sell.

  5. I just got my hagon shipped. Any thoughts (or tricks) on install that I should be considering? I did find the write-up regarding the works install. I am not quite sure how to adjust the thing so I guess i will put it on and see how it goes.

    Larry

Install is pretty straight forward. I think Rick Bulter posted a thread on setting preload to account for sag (bike only) and loaded. I haven't bother to check it. I can tell you it doesn't sag much at all( Ihave the Uprated spring).

When you install it pay attention to the rebound/compression adjuster (allen head screw on the bottom). I installed the shock so the adjuster is pointing to the right (up hill side) of the bike. Easier access

I ordered the Hagon with the Uprated spring. I weigh 195 and the wife is 160. I installed right out of the box. After riding for several hundred miles I added a 1/4 turn (cw) to the damping screw. I have not needed to adjust the spring preload.

  6. I'm back...the three weeks promised for delivery turned into about eight, something to take into account if you're in a hurry to get/install. To their credit, the manufacturer did not charge me 30 bucks for delivery.

I was prepared to be thoroughly pissed off about the delay but the shock is beautiful to see, a serious piece of equipment. If i can figure out how I'll post pictures...

I installed it today and could not find torque requirement for the rear shocks.

Which Shock did you Buy and from which source?

I ordered my Hagon from Hagon LLC in California on a Monday and it arrived in Fort Myers, Florida on that Friday.

  7. I have the Hagon and like it. I think threre is another recent shock thread here or in General tech with more info/posts. You can almost buy two Hagons for the price of one Works shock. Hagon has two year warranty and is rebuildable. Two spring options Standard and Heavy duty. I'll post inthe links to other threads on edit.

This thread covers the available options: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=75298

  8. I have been to Hap's and got to meet him (Hap, not Kenny). Place I worked was dealer trading for a bike up there. Neat Guy. He told me story about when he was a Harley Honda Triumph dealer in the early 70's. Harley wanted him to build a separate store or lose his dealership. In the 70's that was a no brainer and guess who is not a Harley dealer. Of course he said I didn't miss having them in the 70's and 80's but would like to have thme back now (this was early 90's on the cusp of Harley's return).

Hap's is (or at least at that time 1992ish) was the epitomy of motorcycle shops. Also had cycle salvage. A short while later when I had my 92.5 ST 1100ABS, Hap's had the matching trunk for it. Know that Honda introduced and then discontinued the Hondaline Trunk for the ST1100 within a 6 month time period.

Cool article. Brings back memories. I worked in a Motorcycle shop owned by a real estate guy, had no real appreciation for it. Would be nice to work for a Shop owned by a motorcycle guy......

  9.

Playboy, there is a hitch in your giddyup. I cannot raise my own bid to higher than what is showing right now. It is showing $ 1,575.00. I could go to the thread and put in a bid of $ 2,000.00, but until someone else goes higher than me, it will stay at $ 1,575.00, because it is done in intervals.

It takes someone else to bid higher than what my current high bid is...for the bid to change. And, I cannot be the one that raises the high bid, because my current high bid is already higher than the current bid of $ 1,575.00.

    Now...back to Playboy...:stirthepot::rotf::cool10:

    :backinmyday:

The work around for that is easy. Simply sign yourself up (or your wife or SO) with another member account and pay another 12.00 (Freebird needs money too to pay for the extra bandwidth the excessive Thanks button use is causing) and then you can bid against yourself and run the bid until you don't feel guilty about the price your paying :stirthepot:. Not to mention it will double your chances of winning the auction!!!:080402gudl_prv:

  10. I bought mine from Partshark last year. They list it currently for $458.19....

    http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=1755554&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=2011&fveh=51690

    Partsshark 458.19 +23.50 SH=481.69 Boats.net=474.67 free shipping over 250.00.

Then if you don't want air adjustable Hagon with 2 year warranty 399 or 469 Shipped with an uprated spring. I have the Hagon and like it.

  11. If none of them are out then obviously you don't need shims. If you go through and check all the valve clearances first and say you have three or four that are out of spec, sometimes you can swap the locations of the shims around (if you are lucky). Requires a bit more work since you need to remove the shims on all the ones that are out, calculate what you need and measure what you have to figure out if that will work. Can't imagine a dealer not having the shim kit though.

  12. You may want to try draining the carbs. Better to try draining out any stuff you loosen up while soaking than trying to suck it through the jets. Low air pressure through the fuel line after the pump will help blow off the needles and empty the bowls with the drain open.

Will it idle with the choke off ? All four pipes getting hot? That's a good indication your pilot jets are clear.

  13. I've decided I am thanking every post in this thread.

    JohnnyB

I'll Thanks Yours if you Thanks Mine..... I'm looking to increase my Thanks per post ratio.

What about group Thanks.....If everyone online happened to hit the Thanks button on the exact same post at the exact same time, then what??

  14. Yamaha Ring Free (expensive stuff) is basically concentrated Techron,,, I do believe.

Supposed to have same main ingredient. Used to use it for stick valve on my Road Star.

You are correct. When I worked for a Yamaha dealer inthe 90's the regional service rep told me Ring Free was concentrated techron. He indicated it was 4 times more concentrated than retail Techron products. Expensive? Thats relative I suppose. Maintenance doses of Ring Free are 1oz to 10 gallons (IIRC working from memory) so quart treats 320 gallons. Heavy Treatment to Decarbon piston, valves and heads is 2 oz per gallon. I have a bottle, I need to go read it.

The guy who posted they use the 20z bottle in a Royal Star tank (5 gallons) and get decarboning benefits seems inline with what I was told about the concentration differences.

The Techron Fuel System Cleaner is 12.99 for the 20 oz bottle that treats up to 20 gallons. I wait till its BOGO at advance to buy it. Convenient to use for the car that way. Usually every other month its BOGO. Ring Free I order online with other Yamaha parts to get free shipping.

In any regard, Ring Free/Techron is good stuff IMO.

  15. Pinwall won't seperate the brackets from the boards and they have the boards and brackets priced @ $139 each. I feel that is a whole lot to much.

Assuming this is true, I would agree. Brand new From Yamaha boats.net has them for 150.00 and 153.00 L&R respectively. Brackets not listed separately new.

However Pinwall pricing on this type of stuff is normally pretty good. I'm guessing 139.00 would be for the pair at best and otherwise was likely an error or typo. Call them. They may have some boards that were damaged that they didn't bother with listing and may have the brackets laying around (literally).

  16. Thanks for the reply. If I wasn't so lazy, or overlooked it ( readers choice) I might have looked in the manual to find that out. Thanks djh3

He was quoting the Yamaha Manual. You were asking about your Kawasaki Vulcan right??

2nd Edit: I see in your profile you have a new Yamaha RSV too. 87 Ethanol or not, just fine in the Yamaha. Thats what I run in my bike.

See what your Kawasaki Manual Recommends. Given that, the higher the octane, the more resistant the fuel is to igniting. Higher Octane fuels prevent pinging or knocking (typically Valve clatter on acceleration). If your bike will run on 87 with out pinging, I would say run it. Although not all pre igniiton is audible.

The biggest problem with ethanol will be with a bike that sits. If your riding frequently (no more than 1 month to burn a tank a fuel) and bike your Kawasaki requires premium, I would run premium ethanol over the 87 non ethanol all things equal, particularly if the price is the same.

I would question however the 87 octane non ethanol fuel myself. Currently (In my part of florida anyway on edit: I see you are in Fl too.) the only Non Ethanol Fuel available is Recreational Marine Grade fuel and its 90 octane. Few street stations here haveit, mostly marinas. Its also the same price or often more than premium unleaded (4.29 gallon here for the non ethanol last I checked)

  17. Well, I finally pulled the trigger on a new hagon shock. Very nice customer service person!

I think I need to try some leveling links too. Anyone have some out there they want to get rid of?

    Larry

You may find that with the Hagon Shock, you won't need leveling links depending on your objective for them. I have the Hagon with HD spring option and it sits up higher than the stock shock although I can't quantify how much since I didn't do before and after measurements. I have an HD tour pack installed and my bike looks level to me.

Leveling links would be easy enough to add afterward if you feel you still need more height.

  18. I am waiting for the 2014 Indian. 111 Thunderstroke engine w/6 speed OD tranny. Reported to have a touring model. Won't be announced until Sturgis, but the engine was announced at Daytona this week. www.indianmotorcycle.com

    :farmer:

The Cheapest 2013 model is $26499.00 up to $37,899. For that kind of money Indian would not be on my short list. I wonder how many they are selling at that price??

Of course if Polaris can establish it as a low volume, high status brand, cudos to the marketing department. Just the pricing will make it a bike not everyone on the block will have. Polaris will also have to make a distinct separation between the Indian and Victory Lines. Time will tell....

Polaris would be wise to blitz the True Story Movie "World's Fastest Indian" over as many televison network outlets as they can. Great movie. Anyone who hasn't seen it, needs to.

And so its not a total Thread hijack. Congrats to Steve on the New Ride. PM sent about the backrest.

  19. Has anyone ever really burnt a valve?

I have seen a burnt valve from a RSV with 96,000 miles. My friend owns a shop and keeps it around. He worked for the local dealership through several owners for 35 plus years and owns his own shop now. I worked with him back in the early 90's. Only person around here besides me I trust and I would let work on my bike.

I have seen it personally and more apt to happen on air cooled bikes. Its why when a bike runs poorly , the first thing you do is check compression and spark. Trust me, you will only clean the carburetors three times on a bike once to learn this lesson.

  20. But where is it price wise for what its compairing to? I mean an 883 sporty is what under $6k.

Assuming you can get a harley Dealer to sell you a bike for MSRP the 2013 883 Iron (model Yamaha is targeting with the bolt 950) is the cheapest sportster and MSRP is 7999.00

Per the article MSRP on the new yamaha is also 7999 or 8290 for the R spec which adds a few extras. The yamaha is lighter , likely faster than the 883 and IMO better looking than the Iron.

I have ridden both an 883 and a 1200 sportster before and will Venture a guess that the Yamaha 950 will likey be smoother, although Yamaha seems to have a habit of making their bikes shake on purpose now. You gotta love the marketing department.

I still say (hope) they will build a tourer with a version of the new Vmax motor. That would make the most sense form a cost recovery standpoint.
