  1. I believe the surface on the work table was flat, I remember using a torpedo level across the bodies to verify Does the reading from the sync test tell me that I have a serious vacuum leak? I guess meaning I have no vacuum at all on that cylinder unless my brand new meter is sticky, maybe I needed to play around with it more. Also there was fuel coming out of carb holders where I pluged sync hoes into
  2. I believe I need to find the tech talk that refers to adjusting float heights, etc. I really didnt know what I was doing when it came to setting them, I benched all the throttle plates the same by using a thin paper clip from what I remember I love the way it's running but i know it's not healthy and the mileage is brutal I think maybe i need some better parts to maybe, I've learned it's not worth buying cheap parts on this project
  3. This was the kit I used, I re used the original float needle valves as when i put these ones in i had gas pouring out the overflow onto the ground. The carbs have been pulled out of bike about 5 times now so I've gotten it doen but not looking forward to doing it again lol
  4. I did buy a carb rebuilt kit and used some new jets and gaskets which were probably cheaply made as I dont think I spent alot of money on it. So I blasted out all the passageways with carb cleaner, there is 1 air fuel mixture screw on cylinder 4 that is stripped and seized. I did compare the jets to old ones when replacing, I did also have the enricheners pulled part and replaced a gasket their from what I remember
  5. I believe the problem to be with the carbeurator, probably when I put it back together, i am new to all this stuff and I did bench sync but whether I did all the stuff proper who knows, bike does run great even at the low psi but it's getting tons of fuel, was hoping I didnt have to take carb off again but it is looking that way Wish I could have a mechanic work on bike but no one is interested in my area or the ones who will work on it would only do it in winter so this site has been a huge help with the project
  6. Compression showed 120s for the front 2 cylinders, 140s for back 2
  7. Hey everyone, I am having some carb problems and wondering if I can get some pointers or lead in the right direction I have some gas-carbon splatter coming out the right side exhaust, spark plugs are dark and 1 was fouled, also noticed a drop of gas under exhaust from sitting. Next thing is I hooked up my new carb sync tool, and show nothing on cylinder 1, with 3 and 4 being relatively in sync as shown in my photo, to those with experience what does this mean? I am a newbie with this stuff but I'm afraid to keep running bike as I dont want to damage engine. My gas mileage is terrible, I get about 120km for 13 liters
  8. Also this was my first sport touring, love the storage, I get 2 extra helmets in the trunk, I added 2 new speakers, sounds great going down the highway for the stock radio. It has so much in it for it's time, and the project will be really fun and rewarding when you actually get it on the road and enjoy it. I also had to do the brakes on mine which was a pain to bleed until I learned from this site about the system, that service manual will also be very handy as well, I was able to find some new parts for bike but some things I had to buy used from motorcycle salvage.
  9. I love mine, my grandpa left it behind 16 years ago, it sat for 15 years as my dad rode it for a year, it looks like the bike is in great shape from what I see in the picture. If it has been garage stored I expect you will have nice bike. I had to pull off carbs and clean all the passage ways with carb cleaner, and yes it took about 3 times of removing off bike until I got it to the point it would at least stay running. It's a learning experience and there are tricks you will find. I had messed up stuff along the way and have had to replaceman parts due to learning. I changed my tires as well as rubber that has sat that long probably not worth it. Obviously will need a new battery All things you may be able to get bike for alittle less but at 1000 that could be fair if it was well maintained up until it sat You will need a rad flush, probably valve clearance adjustment, would do the valve covers at same time. this site offers so much help in doing your project, there are many good fellows on here also that are willing to help out and can give you good advice. He bike runs great and I couldnt have gotten to where I am today with it without this site, he air suspension feels nice, bike rides so smooth and for a heavier bike very easy to ride. Has lots of power too, it's to bad you can't test drive it to see how great this bike really is
  10. This is great, thanks for all the advice, i really feel I am learning alot, hope to one day be at half your guys experience level. I am going to attempt to clean all this crud out of system tonight. My next question is what do you guys recommend I use for coolant? I know we had talked about using no suds dishwasher power and water for first couple flush through. And also a stronger chemical would a coolant flush product be worth the money? I used to use prestone 5050 blend in my superhawk and never had any issues. I seen patch is in Calgary, I probably gave you a wave at some point in the 7 years I spent there. I also really loved motul oil, my bike ran so smooth and shifted so nice. Do you guys have recommendations in that regard? I did read the article case for fogging and what a good read it was, really lucky to have this site, thanks again for all the work you guys put into this. So much to learn on here and when no one is willing to even look at a bike this old, I have been able to get this classic back on the road
  11. Thanks alot guys, I really appreciate it, I am feeling more confident now in the project, i really think I didnt get all the sludge build up in the first 4-5 flushes I did and that was before bike was on the road, now getting 500km of riding in the sludge has plugged up in areas I believe, the rad was super slow to drain so I have lots of work to do to get all this crap out of the system, aside from this bike runs fairly well, hoping the low compression is something that can be solved by adjusting valves or having a mechanic do work on the top of engine for me this winter. I'm sorry for bringing up multiple subjects in this forum if alot of this stuff is already out there, the only issue I have found with bike is running really rich, which could be to do with how I put carbs back together, i have an idle backfire and she burns tons of fuel, I have a morgan carb tune coming in the mail this week so hopefully I can learn that and see if I can sort out some issues being that every mechanic in my area is either to busy or will not even look at my bike as it is to old. I am really thankful for all you people with experience with these bikes and hope one day I can see you guys on the road. I owe you guys big time if this all works out for me, such a comfortable bike, these bikes are great!
  12. I had done a coolant flush when first getting bike, there was some of this crud in it, I never thought anything of it just figured that dexcool had been used and that was the issue, I am now wondering if it didnt all get flushed through originally, I did a compression check and have 142psi in rear cylinders 122 on the front, still have to do the wet test and see if it changes, seems low though compared to manual, so might be looking for a new bike, love this bike with only 500 km that I got to ride on it, just dont know how much to spend on it
  13. Does this mean I have a blown head gasket? Basically looks like mud in the coolant, any advice, does this mean the bike is toast?
  14. Hey all, was just wondering if anyone has had experience with the cheaper China made diaphrams, I got the price on the oem diaphrams and slides today and was really surprised at how expensive they are, I'm kind of wondering if they are worth it though as I have experienced poor quality before in cheaper parts, would be awesome if anyone could give some advice on the topic, thanks!
  15. Thanks guys, I was thinking about glue myself but wasnt sure its a good idea, now I feel i have nothing to lose and will hopefully be able to source new slides if all else fails
  16. Hi, is there a trick to re installing diaphrams? I put them back together but they keep blowing apart. The plastic washers and metal sleeve are all in peices everytime I open cover
  17. Hi all, just want to say thankyou to everyone who has put the work Into this site. So thankful for all of you people and really proud to be a member. My grandpa left behind a 1987 yamaha venture royale 16 years ago and bike had sat for 15 years. After lots of monkeying around with the bike and messing with carbs I have got bike going and love it. I had been working on and rding sport bikes up until now and have so much appreciation for this bike.i am up in london Ontario canada so if there are any members in the area, would love to connect. Also would like to do some decent trips on bike when getting it running even better, I have been using this site for lots of information and it has helped me get to where I am at today with this bike, I owe you guys who have all taken the time to create this website
