  1. i agree........but let's get back to the original question..........no where is 5w mentioned anywhere....

and to answer...i use rotella 15w40........and my defense would be that the 15 is in the range of oil recommended by yamaha.......but, that could be up for debate as to warranty in the strictis sense.....so i agree....it gets vague....

  2. and since we've now gotten into this............i think most can agree it's vague........so then a legal decision would be based on previous case outcomes.........

i think i'll stick with my "graph"........

  3. i did.......page 7-14 says, "recommended engine oil" see page 9-1.....then: it shows a graph, ( doesn't say recommended) engine oil 10w30.....or.....20w40.........

then it says, "recommended " engine oil grade,,,sg type or higher, JASO standard MA

so,...how will a court decide "recommended" as to "required".......i'll agree it can be debated......

plus, if we're gonna get detailed, where in the manual does it say certifications are mandatory...that's an opinion.....the manual says, recommended.........which can be interpreted as optional ( maybe)......

  4. yeh, that's what i would be worried about.....i've heard enough stories of people with legitimate documentation having to fight for warranty work......much less having to defend an engine issue using a weight of oil not specified in the manual......

yep, i know that's the "cold" rating.........the engineer's that design motors are the ones that decide why and what types of oil to use.....so they have their reasons...

  5. the vent is a standard vent for the honda goldwing....i believe you could probably get that vent somewhere......yep, there'll be a rectanglular hole left in the clearview....i should not be needing the shield, so i will probably sell it....you the first to ask , so you'll be the first to be notified.......i will have to get pics and post 'em......i have no idea what price....but i 'll let you know right now that when i installed this shield a few years ago....i cracked it at one of the mounting holes.....it's been stopped drilled and is not visible at all and hasn't creeped.......the shield itself has no observable scratches......i let you know more...........i have nothing bad to say about the clearview, only good.....and rainx can be used.....

  6. no, the clearview is fine, no complaints, and yes, putting the vent in the f4, saves some money......i went to daytona and back........and the noise caused by the wind turbulence is killing my ears...and i wear plugs...and have a nice 3/4 nolan helmet i bought last year...no help with the noise......so i'm gonna try this taller windshield.....if i don't wear a helmet, the noise is not bad at all.......but i'll swear that a helmet makes noise worse.....

  7. just got off the phone with dave at f4 windshields....and wanted to say how nice they are there and what they're doing for me.....i have a clearview windshield with the vent.......i need the tallest windshield out there and f4's is 1 inch taller than the tallest clearview....i already have a vent so they are shipping me the shield with the vent hole cut out, and a new faceplate, around.....plus 10% off......nice to work with

...the clearview people are good too....

i've replaced the rectifier about a year ago......the stator wires were soldered as suggested.....connections have been checked before.....i've had issues with this bike that started with a dead battery years ago........as i check/ replace/ fix "stuff"....i seem to correct problems, only to have other little problems show up.........it took me until last year to find a bad connector in my heated jacket......but i still saw a load drop when turning on my old halogen passing lamps....now i have led lamps.....figured my problem was solved........only to have this voltage swing/drop show up again...........like i said, if i turn off the jacket/pants combination......i'm seeing almost 14 on the gage....but at one point with every thing on.....i saw 14.......

  9. engine speed has no effect

i guess it could be a problem with the clothes....

at certain times, i had the 13.8v....even had to turn the heat down......i was suspecting the stator might not handle it.......but other's on here have had no problem with the stock stator handling what i had on....i'm even running led passing lamps

just trying to run these symptoms past here to get ideas

  10. bert

i'm on my first E3....jury still out for me on mileage....i got about 12,000 on the original dunlop

rode skyline/ the blue ridge/ natchez trace 2 yrs ago in the last week of may....10 days of riding, 7 days of rain...i wouldn't pick that time period again but you could just chalk that up to luck.........no fuel on the parkway....nice places to stay ( one place had cabins).....but very limited number of places on the parkway.....we had to pull off into the towns off the parkway.....check out little switzerland......lots of scenic lookouts...some sections were/are closed.....but the detours are well marked........start doing research.....you'll enjoy it

  11. ok.....just got back from Daytona.........i had to use my heated gear, gloves, jacket liner, pant liner.....what would cause the charging system to , at one time , to be showing proper voltage ( 13.8) with everything on....then later , voltage down to 12v...and then back up to maybe 13.2 ,,etc...and i'm not talking about the thermostat cycling off and on.....if i turned of the pants and jacket, the voltage would go to normal......gerbing heated clothes..and i have the updated stator.........the way i understand the stator, is that it's basically has "3 phases "...so , one could be acting up ?......what else...

  12. i just got back from daytona...... i wasn't stopped , by anyone, going down or back......i did see a lot of patrols...maybe i got lucky...

well, i just read the article...i went through Sav. on tues. and Thur..so i missed it........i liked the officer's statement about making people aware of motorcycles.....i made some people aware of motorcycles also...glad my stebel was working

  13. to go !......well, i had bike all packed last night, cloths laid out for the morning, all i had to do was get dressed, plug in my heated gear and hit the road for daytona, wanted to be moving by 6..................get up, look out window.....SNOW....and frozen streets......which means slush and salt later.......i hate winter....

  14. thanks for all the comments.....i wish i had the time to go slower..( i'd like to take the "coastal" road)....but i gotta make a balance of time and safety....basically have 4-5 days to play with....i don't wanna rush, and heavy traffic makes me feel rushed.....and that's not safe...i've been on I-95 south of dc to richmond....it was stop and go....no, no accident......

  15. the days we went before the rally, there were no crazies.....you could get a hotel when you wanted....you could eat when you wanted, no lines....ride all the roads with no crowds....see the monuments, no parking problems....yet there were just enough bikes and vendors around to feel a part of being in sturgis..........but you cannot predict the weather......
