Falling Waters, you're right down the street from me. We'll have to get together for a ride sometime... if I ever get my bike put back together!!![/QUOT
Mike I would be glad to meet up for a ride when ever you want. What are you doing to your bike? I may be able to help you get it back together if you do not have it in a shop.
Thanks!!! I am replacing the engine. The original was making some unnatural noises.... I think as a result of hydro lock. New engine is in, just trying
connect all the hoses and what nots... and figure out which bolts go where. I might take you up on the help when I get further along especially if you have the same bike to look at and see which bolt goes where

I haven't payed for a hair cut for over 30 years. I get out the clippers, set the guide to 1/4 " and cut till the hair stops falling.

What is the color on the wires?
Black... all black. Wait, that's just the dirty greasy grime.
Black clip has 1 black and 1 white wire
White clip has 2 that are different shades of green... maybe 1 mint and 1 kinda seafoam green?
I was hoping to just remove the clips and just swap them, but I think I'm gonna have to cut and splice. Good thing is that both engines have the same color wires coming off, only the clips are different

As far as I know, they never changed.
I didn't think so either, Total of 4 clips, 2 connected without issue, but the other 2 were different. Supposedly both engines from 2005 RSVs.
I guess I either need to splice in the correct clips, or try to track them back under the engine. I'm really not sure where they go or what they're for.

The joy of riding motorcycles... Heater works great in the summer, A/C works too well in the winter! Although the nearly 70 degree weekend we just had was pretty comfortable for January.

Soooo, Did they change wire connectors on some of the RSV's? There's 4 wire bundles that come out near the drive shaft (pictured). The wires run under the engine somewhere but I haven't tracked where yet. Question is the wire connectors pictured, did they change for different years/models? I tried for about a 1/2 hour to connect these to the connections under the battery box before I figured out that 2 of connectors are not the same as what was on the original engine. Grrrrrrr!!!

Can't say much for a 2nd gen, but my experience with 1st gens is that coming out is the easy part,,,, got to remember where you held your tongue to get it to go back in. In other words,,, if I'm allowed,,, it slid out but wrestled back in. Does that tell you something?
Thanks! I was thinking I was going to have a similar experience... but remarkably, going in went much smoother than coming out.... still a PITA, but not as bad as the removal.

Well after reading about hydraulic starts, and talking to the previous owner (my dad) about him finding a nice size fuel spill after leaving it in the garage overnight.... and me not understanding why the starter wouldn't turn the bike over before the knocking sound started... I decided to buy a working motor so that I can still ride while I try to figure out the problem...
Anyone know of a thread for engine removal and replace on a 2nd gen? Removal was a PITA, and now putting the replacement seems to be even more of the pain.

I never even heard of a pocket holster until now. I googled it and there is a boatload of then to choose from. They even make different ones depending on which pocket you plan to use and even what type of pants you will wear.
Enter shopping mode..........
Got my pocket holster at walmart of all places and it perfect for cargo shorts or jean pockets... CHEAP and convenient!!!

Thanks for the info Tom, I have been looking around for something to carry in my vest when riding and in my pocket when not. my 9mm Ruger is just to heavy and my 22cal American Arms is a little small but very trust worthy so I am looking at maybe something in the .380 cal. Thanks again good information
I've been happy with my Glock 42. It's the only 380 that Glock has, and I couldn't be happier. Small enough to carry anywhere, even in a pocket of cargo shorts, but still pack enough power to provide protection. If you're looking for something to carry, Look into the Glock 42, or 43 if you prefer 9mm.

Clutch and putting it in gear has no affect on the knock. However the speed of the knock does seem like it is proportional to engine rpm... I'll get a longer video and rev the engine a bit in the process.
I do have a mechanics stethoscope ($3.99 at Harbor Freight) but it just seems like the whole engine is tapping... I try to isolate it to the loudest area, but valve covers, clutch, water pump, cylinders... All seem to be the culprit!
Methinks I'll try removing covers on my next day off to see if something stands out as alarmingly wrong. Unless someone has a better course of action. I'll get the video first though.
Thank you all for the help to this point!!!

Thanks freebird for the help posting, but the site won't let me post it yet because I don't have 20 posts yet. But now there's a youtube video titled
"2005 Royal star venture knocking" I'd post it here, but I'm still on probation with the site.
Did it sound anything like that? I was hoping for something easier like replacing the water pump... I'm handy, but definitely not a mechanic. I think what you've done is well beyond my abilities.

I just received a 2005 RSV as a gift from my father, and when I get it home it started doing the same thing you are describing. Did you ever isolate the issue? I'm new to the forum and I'm trying to figure out how to attach a video/sound clip but not having much luck.
How am I supposed to figure out how to fix a bike if I can't even figure out how to post a video!!!
coolant leak

Hopefully you've already solved this, but I had the same problem. Ended up being my mistake. I replaced the engine and when I connected the coolant hose (right behind the spark plug) I forgot to position the hose clamp. I thought my engine's head was cracked or something. SO MAD!!! Even more mad, but relieved, when I figured out where it was coming from.
If your leak is on the front left or the back right cylinder, check the hose behind the spark plug.
