  1. Good Morning Newb. Just reread to entire thread as a refresher. Right off the bat you said all four pipes were getting hot. Then you said #2 wasn't. You also said the PO replaced 'the coil', do we know which?

Are all the plug wires original? The caps have resistors in them that can rust and interfere with the spark, especially under load. If you take them apart CAREFULLY, mind the small pieces and the assembly order. Mine were knackered (UK term) and had to be cleaned up to get a good resistance reading.

You've got petrol in the carby so I would think the pipe should at least get hot, even if it wouldn't run well. WIth the air cleaner off do all the butterflies open when you twist the thorttle? Should be able to slide the slide out of the way and look down inside.

I have read on the site that Seafoam is good about eventually ruining the plugs, and some folks put in new sets after a heavy treatment of the stuff. Might be worth having a new set available.

So. Have you peeked inside the TCI? After all my futzing around I found mine rusted, corroded, exfoliated, 86ed, all of the above. The fact that it would even run was an act against nature. Again I agree with Da Fool, you don't just throw money at old mechanical beasties, but if you haven't found any chewed-up wiring or corroded terminals in the ignition circuits, I'd be taking a wee little peek inside the TCI. PITA to get to but might be worth it. Cheers.

  2. I've got the forks apart on my Johnny Cash "One Piece at a Time" Frankenstein '83 and Mr' Muskegon above has the jist of it. I did'nt need to take the caps out for the forks to slide out, but no way to loosen them efficiently afterwards if you need to get inside, but it sounds like you don't. For the air collars, I tap them from below with a long screwdriver and a rubber mallet to get them moving, then they'll slide off the top no problem. The snap ring will pop out of the groove with just thumb or fingernail pressure then also slide off the top, then the fork will fall right out on your foot. Or mine!

I just ordered the seals for the anti-dives when I ordered the rest of the seals to rebuild the forks. I use Partzilla, also occasionally known as Boats.net.

  3. Totally agree with the Pucster:backinmyday:, no point not replacing everything you can. On my latest set of forks in order to upgrade the brakes after just rebuilding a set of 83 forks over the winter. Shoulda thunk it all out before doing all that work, c'est la wee.

On the three sets I've taken apart there was another bushing, although it's called a piston. It's not on the '83 diagrams but it is on '84 and up. It's # 36-73 on the '84 diagram. I ordered those also, we'll see when the parts arrive if it's actually that bottom bushing. I'll let you know.

  4. I rode my '83 around on 2 cylinders for a couple months not knowing 2 were dead; I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't maintain speed going over a bridge and why it was drinking gas like a say lerr. Mine turned out to be the TCI, but the others speak wisdom in telling you not to throw money at it. I totally agree about the carbs, took 3 cleanings to get mine right.

Worth a peak inside the TCI, though...

  5. Happy Spring everyone,

Was thinking about getting rid of the Venture since moving to the mountains. Living 5 miles up a dirt and rock canyon road is pretty harsh on the bike, just sounds like stuff is breaking as I go along. But just took it out yesterday after installing COPs and it's just too much damn fun to get rid of!

So I think I want to do the brake upgrade to thr R1/R6 type. Being super-super extra lazy, can someone give me a parts list of what I'll need? I guess the first thing will be '86 and up 1st Gen lower forks, but what else? I guess de-linking would be worthwhile at the same time. So. Yeah.
