What is this wire connection for?

Hey guys, sorry if the question is too basic or stupid, but my 86 Royale is my first bike and I am learning as I fix it ( or make things worse)

After dealing with a dead battery this wire connector remained and it makes me wonder what is it for?

The red thing is the battery electrolyte level sensor probe, it goes into the top of a battery to monitor the level of the liquid. It can be removed by reading this thread:
