The new Pipes look far superior to my current 87's so I hope it can be done? I also unfortunately noticed the 83's tip's don't have the springs to keep them in place, what keeps the 83's tips from falling off? The 83 has the anti vibration built into the mount which is in the passenger peg bracket. The 87 has this anti vibration right in the mounting bracket of the muffler. Some sort of adapter would have to be made up to attach the muffler to the lower end of the 87s passenger boards. Bolt is much smaller so a spacer or bushing of some sort? I mounted a MKII set onto my 84 which was fairly easy but not sure the other way around would be as easy.. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I just noticed the 87's are quite different than the 83 set. the 83 set only has 1 tip, but they are in much better condition than mine so I hope I'll be able to find another tip. I bought it for the collector which is in good shape luckily, the rest is only needed for looks so I still can use the original pipes if I have to I'm actually going the other way: putting 86+ side boxes on my 83 and leaving the tips off the 83 muffs. You see, every time you force exhaust to change direction, it introduces restriction. Anything in the way of the pressure/sound wave also introduces restriction. Which means adverse effects on performance. Some will "poo poo" turn down tips making any difference, but I've proven something as simple as a thumb screw in an exhaust costing (or giving) a HP gain on the dyno. Actually, here's a guy showing a similar thing on a Harley: Time will tell if not having the turn downs will effect anything else (IE: heat, exhaust soot, etc) Edited September 11, 2015 by Great White Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Vonwolf Posted September 12, 2015 Author Share #6 Posted September 12, 2015 I bought whole exhaust system pretty much just for the collector, it seemed like a pain to try mine and it was cheap enough so why not. The chrome on the 83's pipes and mufflers are better than mine so I'll use most of it, but the mufflers only have one of the end cap's and from the way it looks on the 83 parts diagram it looks like they're all one piece. Great White Posted September 12, 2015 Share #9 Posted September 12, 2015 (edited) I've got a 30,000 kms "unmolested" 83 in the garage and the muffler end caps are spot welded in place. They look like they're not attached, but the spot welds are visable from the underside. There are about 3-4 spots. Same with the 86 mufflers I have in the parts loft, except the turn downs slip over the spot welded end caps and are retained by springs. Take the turn downs off and the muffs have the same style end cap as the 83. 86+ muffs are essentially the same as the earlier years (with mounting differences already mentioned) except with this turn down slipped on and retained by the springs: http://thumbs4.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/m6Hm3wN_FnLOFnAUwb3Ue5Q.jpg Can't speak for other years, but that's the 83 and 86 ones I have at hand. Vonwolf Posted September 12, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted September 12, 2015 I only have my one 87 and yep it's held on by 6 tac welds, but the end piece of the MKI "tip?" has a "tang?" that protrudes out the whole circumference of the lip that is held in place by spot welds, there are no grinder, drill or cutting marks of any kind on either of the joining areas of the muffler pieces. That is the source of my confusion the pieces slide together perfectly and somewhat securely, but a good whack from a pothole in the road and it would take flight never to be seen again.That might be what happened to the other piece? <!--url{0}-->[/img]</p><p> <img src=[/img] I know everyone is looking at their MKI'sand MKII ans seeing spot weld of some sort, but unless this thing was done by a Master welder or maybe a Magician (I doubt it) there are no welds holding these two pieces together. I'm not trying to be difficult, but I do know what a drilled out spot weld or a ground off tac weld look like and they and not anywhere to be found on the muffler ends. My 83 won't even budge (not going to try popping with the rubber mallet either!). I also see what looks like some deformations in the ring that would press into the muffler body. Vonwolf Posted September 12, 2015 Author Share #12 Posted September 12, 2015 It is strange I'm thinking my original mufflers are the one that have been messed with by a PO, It expect factory welds to be nice and neat like the older end piece and not rusting tac welds at random places like my bike has. There is also no way the newly acquired muffler ends, nice as they are would stay in place for very long. Might be the reason I only have one so my guess is I have yet to see a true unmolested muffler the more I compare the sets the weirder it gets? Mysteries really annoy me, I will not be able to get this out of my head, I have no point of reference I only have the one bike and Ventures aren't exactly falling out of trees here. Might see if I can sift through close-ups of eBay pictures and see if I find a clue, I destroyed my Back a couple days ago and I seem to be immobilized at the moment so I appear to have the time Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
