Detachable Tour Pak Prototype is Here !

Recommended Posts

Finally got the prototype detachable tour pak bracket back from the water jet shop (thought it was going to be laser cut). i'm attaching some pics. keep in mind that this material is only .060 thick and the final product will be .125 (i.e. 1/8"). there are several changes to be made, one is more radiusing on several areas, another is removing some additional material from the sides, and possibly utilizing gussets if necessary. you will notice that the front of the bracket uses the stock front mount for the stock backrest, you will also notice the back of the bracket uses additional docking hardware with locking mechanisms. the tour pak in the pic is one i purchased for approx. $110.00 (plus shipping), it is ABS plastic and actually has lines on the top of pak which mimics the gas tank lines. we will be repainting the tour pak (getting rid of that silly yellow dot on the top of tour pak) and will also be painting the bracket to match the bike. feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Gee Naturbar your bike looks a lot like mine!

The bracket is looking good. Realize it is a work in progress, but I think your on the right track. I have the Mustang pillion seat on my bike which I think is a little bigger than the stock Yamaha seat but it looks like there would still be suffient space there. If you need any dimensions for future fitment issues, just let me know.

How does it lock in place on the rear pins?

Once you have the final design would you consider offering a chromed version?

The tour pack your using is the same one I was considering. Are you happy with the unit so far?

06RSTDRIDER,

i apologize for not getting back to you sooner. if you are referring to the space between my bracket and the rear seat - i can make that spacing to your specification. the front of my bracket uses your stock yamaha front backrest docks - the rear of my bracket uses harley docks which screw into the stock holes which have chrome caps in them. you just push out the caps redrill that hole and tap to 3/8-16 - you then use the docks and hardware that comes with my kit. this rear bracket does not interfere with the stock yamaha backrest either. i see no reason why i can't sell the bracket chrome plated (understandng that good chrome plating drives up the cost). i will have the real brackets tomorrow and will test fit them and if all is well then they'll get primed, basecoat and clearcoat and will be installed. i will post pictures as soon as i have completed the installation on my bike. the tour pak that i am using is ABS plastic (very light) - it came painted, albeit not the best job and the top of the pak has this dumb yellow medallion on it. we disassembled the pak, remove the medallion, scuffed the paint and shot base/clear black to match the bike. just today i water sanded it, buffed and polished it - it now looks incredible for a $100.00 tour pak. i think you will agree when i post the pics. thanks for your interest.
