I changed my headlight bulb and I love it but now the passing lights look weak.

hello i did the same on my 99 rsv and the passing lamps where not bright the was a post that said to change the passing lamps to a set from a vstar 1100 i do not rember the part # is is for the haligens lights i did this and used a h3 silverstar bulb now i have very bright lamps on the frt i love it the lamps are 118.00 at the dealer silverstar he bulbs are 19.95 ea from pepboys

If they do, Yamaha makes two different passing lamps..... one takes PAR36 bulbs, the other has a PAR36 lamp that uses a H3 bulb.

 

Why are you using Silverstar bulbs???? There are a LOT of better bulbs on the market.

What bulbs do you like better than Silverstars. I have used them on a Valkyrie Interstate for several years and love them. I have also never had one burn out.

 

Do you have to buy a whole new fixture or can you convert the sealed beam to the halogen?

Running Silverstar H3s myself.... When I purchased my passing lamps, I didn't realize they were sealed beam. So, my best friend gave the guts of his father-in-laws passing lamps for his VTX (He is a cop and uses his VTX for funeral escorts...swapped out lamps for LED strobes). The new guts used H3 bulbs, but all I had at the time were the 25W Honda lamps. To me, they were way to yellow compared to my PIAA GTX headlamp. So, I picked up a set of the silverstars at wally world. I tell ya, those bad boys got some light to em....hehehe :D

I would be interested in finding out whether the sealed beam passing lamps can be converted to halogen as well.

 

One comment on the H3 - had them in the passing lamps on my Roadstar. They are most commonly sold as 55w lamps which may be too much load for your charging system or wiring. You can find them in 35W but you have to look a little harder.

I don't like Silverstars... I have installed Piaa Xtreme White Plus H4 bulb in the headlamp for my bike. In the passing lamps I will install a Piaa Xtreme White Plus bulb of appropriate size.

 

 

 

Yamaha offers 3 options for passing lamps for the RSV and RSTD.

 

REMBER that our passing lamps are PAR36 sized lamps or sealed beam bulbs.

 

I got all this information from the Star Motorcycles web site....

 

See the part that is high-lit in red blelow, but remember you will have to rewire your sealed beam passing lamps for the H3 Bulb

 

  1. Sealed Beam Passing Lamps

    Fits all V Stars, all Road Star Standard/Silverado and Royal Star Standard/Tour Classic/Tour Deluxe (with use of mounts) STR-4NK35-10-00 $118.95


    Sealed Beam replacement light bulb STR-4NK35-50-00 $18.95


     

  2. Halogen Passing Lamps

Harley Davidson offers at least two Par36 sized lamps that should fit in the Yamaha chrome housings but you might have to do some wiring modifications.

 

  1. 68208-98A about $70 for the pair. I think these take a h3 bulb.
     
     
  2. 68348-05 about $70 for the pair. I think takes a 881 bulb but I will put a Piaa Xtreme White Plus 880 (27 watts so not a big load on the charging system but quite a bit of light) in it..... IF I purchase a set. But I don't know if the Yamaha passing lamp housings are deep enough to accept them...

 

 

I hear tell that there is a PAR36 size lamp that takes an H4 bulb, but I have not found it without a chrome housing... yet. Also I don't think the electrical system could handle 3 high beam very well, and it is against the law in most states to have more than two headlamps on a motorcycle........

I have the passing lamps with the sealed beam bulbs and I would be much happier with the halogens (H3). I would use the PIAA H3 bulbs - I have the PIAA H4 for the headlight and its great.

 

Do you think that I would just have to replace the lens in the sealed beam bucket? At a bit over $20 each, it would be worthwhile as long as there aren't any complex wiring issues. (Would it need any sort of socket or lamp holder?) The PIAA lamps would cost a lot more than the conversion.

that price I THINK is per lamp, so you would need two of them.... Check with your dealer.

 

 

You MIGHT need to modify the bike's wiring a bit change from a PAR36 Sealed beam lamp that takes two lugs to the wiring of the H3 bulb.

Note in the picture above that the H3 has one male spade terminal and no ground mounting, so you will have to make some minor modifications.

In the photo above, you will see the electrical connections on the PAR36 sealed beam lamps that are USUALLY used as passing lamps. note the two screws for attaching wire lugs.

I will probally buy the Harley 68348-05 about $70 for the pair.

 

I THINK that they take a 881 bulb but I will put a Piaa Xtreme White Plus 880 (27 watts so not a big load on the charging system but quite a bit of light) in it... A lot lower current draw on the charging systme at 27 watts per bulb verses the 50 watts per bulb that the H3 draws.

 

I have seen them on a buddies H-D Ultra Classic and I like em, but IIRC they did say Harley Davidson on some part of the lamp.
