Passing Lamp Option

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone....

I have looked and looked on the site and have not found anything about the following I got from the Star Touring Remedy List...

Do NOT buy the Venture passing lamps. Instead, buy the V-Star halogen passing lamps. They will fit the Venture passing lamp mounts with no problem. Remove the red wiring from the switch in one of the lamp housings and wire it to the Venture lamp switch. Why do this? Unlike the sealed beams, the halogen lamps have a replaceable H3 bulb. Pull out the bulbs and keep them as spares. Purchase the PIAA or Silverstar Ultra H3 bulbs. They are still 35 watt bulbs (i.e. do not consume more power), but put out 70 watts of light. Passing lamps part no.: STR-4NK35-10-00

OK...$88.00 for the H-3 Lamps on this site

for the Halogen passing lamps....Unless there is an EASY way to change the Passing Lamps...I did see some posts for the Adjure lights...ANYONE here do this mod?....I have done the Silverstar Bulb for the Headlight....

ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS....:confused24::confused24:

I have seen a few members use those lights - wish I had known about them way back in '04. I certainly would prefer to have the H3 lights instead of the poor sealed beam lights. Just make sure you stick with 30W or 35W bulbs; the more common 55W bulbs will prevent your battery from reaching full charge unless you are spending many hours at high RPM on the highway. :080402gudl_prv:

George I've been giving that same advice to anyone that will listen... I had a heads up to this cuz my Bro's got the sealed beams and they do a poor job of adding light and look kinda yellow... So when I ordered my passing lamps I got the RSV light bar and the Stratoliner lights... The Strat bulbs didn't work out and I've replaced the bezels with wannabe Adjure tri-bars (similar to the V-Star bulbs) and they work great... I'm using the 55W Silverstars in mine but I also have the Buckeye Performance higher output stator... I ran the 55W with my old stator for about a year but the stator burned up.. One more thing if you go with the 35W H-3s buy an extra set of bulbs because they can be hard to find in stores... Most I've been to only carry the 55W bulbs... Do you already have passing lamps or are you buying them for the 1st time? If you already have the chrome buckets you just need to replace the bezels.. If you're just adding passing lamps get the RSV passing lamp light bar and the V-Star (or other H-3) passing lamps... This will come with the chrome buckets, bezel, and H-3 bulb and some wiring... Good Luck

Sounds kinda close to what I did, but mine wasn't on purpose. I bought the Venture light bar with Venture lamps not knowing they were sealed beam. It was one of the rare times I didn't put a lot alot of research into something and it bit me (as I should have expected). But, I lucked out as my best friend's father-in-law had gutted his lamps for his VTX to add flashing red/blue LEDs (does escorts for funerals and such; SAPD). They just happen to fit the venture buckets perfect like and I know have an H3 bulb setup. For the moment, I am still running the OEM 25W Honda bulbs, but I'll eventually pick me up some nice 35 watters...

If you have the sealed beam lights, there are other sealed beam bulbs that fit....

Search for PAR36 size bulbs with a 12-14V rating, and whatever beam shape and wattage you want......as long as the charging system can keep up!!!!!

I am thinking about the H4460X bulb as it has two 40-Watt filaments with a beam that is 22 degrees wide and 10 degrees tall for one filament and 22 degrees wide and 13 degrees tall for the other. you could run a wire to both filaments, run one for low and the other for high, or just use one as a spare....... BUT they are about $31 EACH.

I put the v-star lamps on mine and then removed the switch from the bucket and rewired the lamps to a relay and a switch assembly mounted on my handle bars.
