1. Hey greg:

The most recent oil change used a Valvoline 10w40 as opposed to the 10w60 Maxum. The whine has since gotten worse.

The Maxum 10w60 is a synthetic ester-oil based racing oil that is specifically designed for "wet clutch" applications. The Advanced proprietary Tri-Metallic formula lowers engine temperatures, reduces friction, increases film strength and extends oil drain intervals.

Therefore, I noticed less clutch whine across the board.

    Hope this clarifies?

  2. I proceed with caution because people are "passionate" about what works for them...

I recently got an oil change after ... a bit longer than it should have been... and they used what was recommended and what they had and I noticed a considerable change in the clutch whine.

my previous mechanic - who is unfortunately out of commission for awhile due to health problems - used Maxima Maxum Extra 4 Synthetic 10w60 oil in my RSTD and now I remember why. The Maxum is engineered for Wet Clutches, heat reduction, etc. The oil did wonders for the clutch whine which most people observe gets worse as the bike heats up.

Big difference! I live in the moderate climate of SE North Carolina, so I feel the viscosity is fine for all year...

I look forward to your responses!

  3. though I have to agree that it is kinda cool, there is no practical value. I mean, I got a closet full of them, but my sansa clip mp3 player has 1200 songs on it and growing. plug and play on the bike. the tunes go on for miles and miles and no need to "Flip the Tape."

    haha!!

    Hey VR members:

I recently got the Star OEM chrome rear fender tip and installed it. This was in a shed with little room, but I managed to get it done with few screw ups, and scratches.

I followed directions that were provided, but keep in mind that in addition to the saddle bags, the passenger backrest hardware will need to be REMOVED from the rear fender to gain access to where the hole needs to be drilled. This was a little time consuming, and some anxious moments as the allen bolts were red threadlocked in. Took some leverage to break loose and get off. Ditto with putting back on. Lining them back up was time consuming to assure no crossthreaded allen bolts.

One thing that I will stress- and that I did not do thoroughly enough is- TAPE OFF THE FENDER several inches HIGHER than the top edge of the chrome tip. I taped the back of the chrome tip as instructed when fitting, but the edges are so sharp that it cut the tape and eventually scratched the paint. Also, during installation, masking off the fender ABOVE the top edge of the tip is important. More on that later...

Be sure to quadruple check your marks for drilling! If you have someone that can help you with this, please employ their assistance to make sure that the chrome tip does not move when marking. I was a little off and had to use the rattail file to broaden the drill hole. During this process, I slipped and scratched the crap out of the fender, hence the MASKING TAPE ON FENDER SUGGESTION! ha! (note: the stock Yamaha color of my 2005 according to Color Rite is 0919- Bluish Gray Metallic....) Also- Remember WOOD BEHIND FENDER WHEN DRILLING. Even then, be careful not to penetrate wood with drill bit and nick the tire.

I searched and searched for the 3M gasket type, self adhesive-backed, rubber trim to put on the back of the chrome tip that was suggested by another VR member. I had no luck finding this stuff at Home Depot, Lowes, or a 3M Window tinting place? If you have the time to get it, it may be helpful with chrome to paint contact. I used Electrical Tape since I couldn't find it.

I used quick dry nail polish to prime the drilled holes.

As usual, this project took much longer than expected. My opinion for a DIYer: plan on 3 HOURS to complete due to all the hardware removal and reinstallation if you don't have the bike on a lift, have air tools, etc.

I also installed the front rear chrome tip and it was lickity split- less than an hour.

    Good luck!

  5. just found all the GOOD OEM fender tips. Twiggcycles out of Maryland has a bunch of RSTD parts.

I have found that it is better to search under "Venture" and then cross-reference the items for the RSTD.

I guess it all depends on what you need...

  6. I have a pic of them on my '99 in my album. They were installed by the original owner and they still look good as long as you keep the bug guts off of them.

looks like you have the round ones too... Thanks for your response Wrench!

  7. I have had mine on sense 2003 and they are just as shinny now as they were then. I like how they look and when I see a bike with out them, there bike looks naked....

you have just about everything on that bike!! very nice! I wish Star had pictures with ALL the accessories on a bike for a reference ya know?

  8. Well it didn't exactly take 10 minutes, but it was a fun project and looks great!

I had no such luck "sliding" the plastic backing in between the windshield and brackets with the 3 center bolts loosened. The gasket continued to get out of place... I eventually took a lot of bolts out the get everything aligned properly. Also make note that the 2nd bolt in on both sides are LONGER to accommodate the lower leg brackets. Took a few minutes and some creative swearing to figure this out...

When I put the windshield back on the bike there was an issue with the center bag pulling down towards the top of the speedo?? So much so that I could not get it unlatched easily. I see on your pictures that there is not a center rivet at the bottom of your center bag attaching it to the plastic backing, but there is on mine?? This doesn't allow the bag to sit up in the center and causes it to "pinch" in... strange. (See Photos)

I would just make sure to give yourself enough time to do this all properly. I removed the bottom rivet on the center bag and it solved all the issues. Had i realized, I would have removed the rivet BEFORE putting the bag on.
