1. What's your coolant replacement schedule been? I change mine every 2-3 years because I've read that anti-freeze changes and becomes slightly acidic with use. Then gaskets are eaten away. This allegedly is the cause of head gasket and intake manifold gaskets failing on car/truck motors with an aluminum head. When I changed my coolant after rebuilding the water pump this spring, I installed 5 year Prestone, but I haven't decided if I'll leave it in for the full 5 years yet.

I would have to look into this as you would imagine the coolant would be designed not to react with the alloys. I changed the coolant probably once every two years or when I could be bothered.

  2. Ok so I got one of the heads off and now I'm waiting for the parts to put it together. Wasn't that hard after all. Not sure if I should bother cleaning the carbon off the pistons?

  3. I guess the pistons are in the upper position so the valves can't fall through. I think I going take the cylinder heads of anyway. I have ordered some head gaskets I just hope that I can do it with the engine in the frame.

  4. Can't wait to get this finished should feel like a new bike.

Ok so I have the dynatek in and the carby. I have already purchased the springs with all the other bits but having a really hard time getting them in. Are there any tricks with getting them on without taking the engine out or the heads off, that's if I can get the heads off without taking the engine out?

    Any ideas?

  5. Thanks to you all for your help. Last week I had a chance to spend a day on the bike so I decided to do the required work to get this leak fixed. I refurbished the pump as well as the breather as it was only a small difference in price. When I pulled it apart I think that it was the breather as the o rings were almost flat and I think they have been leaking very slowly for a long time. The pump seals were a bit worn but I think they were still holding up. Hopefully I will get the new carbies on in the next few weeks and I can take it for a ride.
