  1. Got my new Wing this past week, and all I can say is "GREAT" !! After having two RSVs I was a little hesitant to go to the different riding position but rode for 6 hours yesterday and had absolutely no problem. It's smooth, it's quiet, it's so comfortable, it's got plenty of power and I absolutely love it. Only problem is I have to work and can't ride as much as I want to.

Don't get me wrong, I think the RSV is a great bike but I was ready for a change and I ain't looking back.

If you like them, and your copilot likes it I say go for it NOW !!!

    Good luck !!

  2. Thanks everyone for the well wishes and kind words. I really enjoy this site and the people here. But I am going to have to ask Don to change my name since I don't have an RSV now. Think I'll just keep it simple and go by "Rich", my name.

As for the garage, my wife and kids did the garage for me last year. I had not finished painting after Katrina and it was just primered. The paint scheme is my daughter's idea. And her and my son did the floor. My wife bought the work bench and cabinet. I was in Ok. City for a month and came home to this.

Hipshot, the detectors fold up. They will fit in the saddlebag. Unfortunately I haven't had time to go hunting lately.

  3. It only took me 3 months to make a decision but I finally picked up my new bike tuesday. It wasn't my first choice, or even my second. But after eliminating the first choice and scratching the second choice because of the dealer I chose this. No, it's not a Venture. After losing my 99 to Katrina, which was the bike I dearly loved, and then totaling out the 06, which by the way, wasn't my fault, I decided I needed a change. Have only managed to put 50 miles on her due tyo work and bad weather but the weekend forcast is for sunny skies so riding I will be.

    I still think the Venture is one of the finest touring bikes and hopefully you all will let me continue to hang out here. Met a few of you last year at Vogel and am hoping to meet more this year. SO, here she is;

  4. DC from PA by way of St Louis, Memphis, and Birmingham.....you need to get a new GPS !!!!!!

Just kidding, have a great ride. I will be in DC over the holiday weekend but I'll be in a motor coach, on charter. If you see a "Visions Tours" bus, that's me!!!

  5. He's right about the 06 emblem being rather large, but it was distinctive and I really liked it. Have a friend that is holding a set for me. The 08 went back to the same/similar emblem from the older bikes. But most people who take them off do so to get that clean smooth look on the tank. If you've ever seen an RSV with the rubber strip taken off the top you'll be amazed at what a big difference that makes also. Tank is smooth and painted, and looks so much better without the strip on it. But then you just about have to put a mural there...the bike screams for a mural there.

  6. Dealer in Picyune Ms. has two, a blue and a midnight. The dealer in Hattiesburg had 3 a month ago. I understand Corinth Ms. dealer always has them, and is the cheapest in the area, next to what my local dealer offered me. Dealer in Slidell La had a midnight about two weeks ago when I was there. This is the most RSVs I've seen in the area ever. I guess Yamaha isn't like Victory...if you don't sell at least 80 Victorys a year, you're likely to lose your franchise. (just what I've heard) As someone said the RSV riders are an elite group. PTBAV

  7. Hope you get this before you leave but just a little suggestion. When you get to Baton Rouge take I12 east instead of I10. The two split on the east side of Baton Rouge. This will save you some time. I12 crosses I55 in Hammond. Watch the traffic in Baton Rouge. I think they gather all the crazies in La and put them there. You will probably run into some construction in the BR area but shouldn't be a problem .

I55 in La is rough; sometimes the left lane is smoother. When you get to Jackson Ms again WATCH out for traffic. That is, FOR SURE, where all the crazies are for Ms. I55 from Jackson to Memphis is pretty nice. I'm not familiar with I57...don't know where you'll pick it up but if you're going north on I55 out of Memphis into Arkansas the road gets really rough after the Jonesboro (Hwy 63) exit.

Can't give you anymore advice than has already been posted, but if you have the time, don't push yourself. 500 mile days is comfortable. I've ridden from Biloxi to Ok City straight through; that's 13-14 hours, 815 miles. By the time I got there I was absolutely exhausted. Have fun and good luck!!

  8. OK Don, I'll be the stupid one. I have looked all over the site and can't find the dates for Maintenance Day. Could you please post it here for stupids like me ???!!!!! If at all possible I would like to try to make it this year. Thanks in advance.

  9. I've had two RSVs, the first after riding a Royal Star for 4 years. The Royal Star is a lighter bike and it took some getting used to the RSV. But time and practice is the secret. One morning I was leaving my house for work on my 06. My driveway has a little curb where it meets the street so there's a little bump. I went out into the street...no sooner had the rear wheel cleared the bump than I gave it a little throttle. The bike stalled,. I was already leaning to the left and down I went. There I lay in the street next to my fallen steed, LAUGHING MY HEAD OFF!!! The neighbors must have thought I was crazy. It was just so funny how it happened. No, no injuries to me or the bike. As others have already said, the Venture is top heavy but manageble, and if you do drop it, it's heavy to pick up. Just take it easy for the first few hundred miles, and I even STRONGLY SUGGEST riding solo for those miles, and you'll do fine. The Venture is a helluva bike....respect it and she'll give you countless miles of enjoyment.

  10. I drove over to Baton Rouge saturday to look at and test ride a BMW K1200LT, which I had supposedly set up for on friday. When I got there they had the "sold" 2008 for me to look at but the demo was "down" because they had taken a front brake line off 3 days earlier to repair a customers' bike. On top of that while I was in the shop looking at a new bike they were putting together the owner (woman) came in and started yelling at me for being in the shop. The sales manager told her that HE brought me into the shop and I was a "potential customer". She stopped yelling but didn't apologoize. I left the shop area and started to get into my truck. The sales manager came out and I told him that I drove 2 hours thinking I was going to be able to test drive a bike, and I didn't appreciate getting yelled at. I then left the dealership. Unfortunately they are the only BMW dealer here in the South but I won't be going back there.

  11. Well if they end up closeing Hwy 129 like they have been talking about, that place wouldnt be worth much at all......:whistling:

Maybe they already know something we don't ! I would do some checking before I invested the kind of money I am sure they are asking!!

  12. I had a 99 and an 06 and from what I've seen and experienced, they all are pretty much the same. I have read that the 07s have a headbolt problem but I don't remember anything specific to the 03. Biggest issues with the Venture have been the clutch whine/chirp and some problem with the rear end, which is usually cured by a good cleaning and greasing of the splines. On earlier models there was a problem with the trunk; it would develop crackes in the bottom. But yamaha came out with a mod to correct this. If you can look at the bike up close lift the mat in the bottom of the trunk and look for tiny cracks usually radiating from the mounting bolts.

I seem to recall that there was an issue with the lowers cracking and also cracks in the plexiglass lower wind deflector mounts. Neither of my bikes had this problem. I would guess that the cracked lowers was caused by overtightening the mounting bolts. There have been problems with the radio controller and the CB, but if all is working on the bike you are looking at I wouldn't worry about it. It's like buying anything used...all could be good one day and the next....... If the bike looks as if it's been maintained well I would bet you have a keeper. Ventures are a tough bike overall and have a good record of many many useful miles. Good luck and Happy Riding!!

  13. I bought mine through the local dealer who, at the time, gave me a 15% discount. Had to wait awhile but it was worth it. You might try Rickh on the Venturers.org webpage. He can get almost anything you need and his price might be better than the dealer, unless you get a discount. Unfortunately the dealer stopped giving discounts. Further unfortunately, I don't have my 06, or any bike for that matter now.

  14. Fozzy, I put the Yamaha deflectors on my 06. They were great and looked a lot better, IMO, than the Bakerbuilt. They fit the curve of the lowers and when closed, take almost all the wind off your feet. You can open them and pull in as much air as you want. When I went to WV last year(my last ride) I had them open most of the way on the interstate and they helped considerably to cool the lower part of the bike, my feet and legs. When I got to Beckley I closed them because it got cold and there was a marked difference. They also help keep you dry in the rain. If I get another Venture they will be one of the first accessories I add.

  15. I was going to look for a 2ndGen, but now I think I'll stick it out until the 3rdGen RSV 1800's come out... Then I can payback all those 2ndGens with all their parts falling off..... :rotfl::rotfl:

The only time I heard of anyone losing parts off a bike was from a tired old 1st Gen. But I think the rider was actually pulling the parts off and dropping them so he could find his way home!!!!!!!!!!!:rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf:

  16. Great video !! Thanks for posting. And the pictures of the Midland Airshow are great also Boo.....Thanks !

I was lucky enough to be stationed at Bitburg AB Germany in the 80s. We had 3 squadrons of F15s. Our neighbor base, Spangdahlem, had the F4 Wild Weasels and Hahn AB a little farther northeast had F16s. Of all the jets I've ever seen the F14 Tomcat because of its size, and the F15 because of its speed and agility, are my all time favorites. The F15 was the first, and for a long time, the only jet fighter that could accelerate in a straight climb from the deck. It still holds some records that haven't been broken. The F14 amazes me because of how big it is and what it can do. They have one on static display at the Navy museum in Pensecola and when you walk under it it is BIG !!!!!

The Raptor is amazing in that it has such fantastic slow speed agility. And if I'm not mistaken its exhaust is/can be vectored. No doubt it is heads above the F15, but the Strike Eagle will always hold a special place in my heart. By the way, I was in Comm in the Air Force. These guys used to vibrate my ILS to pieces when they took off. But they were thankful I could keep it on the air when they wanted to come home.

By the way, the F4 was a "flying brick". It had a glide ratio of 1:1.....1foot down for every foot forward. Could not accelerate going straight up, even in full AB. But they would scare the hell out of you coming in at treetop level on a straffing pass if you didn't see them coming.

  17. Seems to me that the oil companies could go to Venezuela and buy refined gas and bring it here and sell it for a profit but still a LOT cheaper than we are paying now.

When we were in Germany in 97 I told my wife that we are lucky in the US but that our luck would eventually run out and we would be paying $4 a gallon for gas. Well it took awhile but, guess what Folks, it's that time!!!!

By the way, and Don, I'm trying not to get political, but what country/companies do you think developed all the Middle East oil fields????????

  18. 86er beat me to the punch. I was going to ask you "what is wrong with a Z1R??" I have one and to me it's a good helmet. And as 86er pointed out it is rated right up there with the more expensive helmets. Most of the time I wear a 3/4 Shoi RJ Air. I would like to get a full face/flip up but haven't really looked lately. My Z1R is a half helmet I wear around town. I'm on my 2nd RJAir because it's the most comfortable helmet for me when I'm on the road.

  19. Great advice Orrin. We don't have the problem of potholes here in the South as much as we do sand and gravel on the roads. With all the construction going on here on the coast the roads are really messed up. Interstates aren't too bad but you really have to be careful coming up behind semis, especially the big dirt/gravel haulers. Seems no one down here pays any attention to the law and covers their load, so lots of windshield get broken. Even state and county dump truck equipped with those rollup tarps, don't use them. Wish I was a cop for just a week. I don't think they would have enough ticket books for me.
