  1. Yesterday

Went for a nice ride (about 100 miles). It started off with me meeting my friend about 20 miles from my house. when we met up i told him i wanted to stop for gas before we went anywhere. he told me that he would rather get going and push all the old gas out of his tank before we stopped for gas. i was at 3 bars on the guage so i reluctantly agreed. We headed out to the point where my fuel light just kicked on. told he we needed to stop for gas so we pulled over. I pull up to the pump and get off my bike. Just as i get off the bike i realize i left my dang fuel cap key at the house (75+ miles away). So after a little heckling on his part and some rage on mine we start heading back the direction we came from. I only made it 3 more miles before i had to switch to reserve. I only made it about half way back and had to call the wife to bring me the key. She began heckling me as well. Who the heck at yamaha decided to use the bag key for the fuel key as well. Was it to hard to just key the cap like the ignition so you can never forget your key?

Anyway on a side note. Sweet redemption on the hecklers. The baby cried all the way home for the wife and while we were waiting at the gas station my partner decided to check his oil on his harley and pulled the dipstick out and broke it off in his hands (nothing went in the pan). Oh yeah the heckling reversed.

  2. I agree with alot of the guys. 100,000 miles is alot for any bike regardless of how reliable the motor is. You can find some lower mileage bkes for pretty cheap right now. I just got my 04 with 22,000 miles for $7000. It bluebooks for 11,900 according to NADA. Now if the bike is just an absolute steal like say $3000 or so get it. Just be aware that the money you saved on buying the high mile bike should go into replacing well worn items like bearings and such to keep it from turning sour. JMHO.:mo money:

  3. billf739............Use a brass bristled brush to get all of the rust off....then scrub the area clean with a wet SOS pad.....rinse well...when the area is good and dry spray the rust area down with Clearcoat. Get at least 3 good coats of Clearcoat on the rust-infected area.

    Ride safe and smooth sailing.

Boomer........A Chief who knows about kicking butt on rust.

Just have him bust out the needle gun and some haze gray. Seems to fix everything. maybe some bug juice? hell it cleans the oxidation off of brass fire nozzles and still gets served on the mess decks. now that is some all around stuff

  4. www.leatherup.com is an awesome online store with great customer support. they sell more than just leather products. I bought a full face from them for $60. They have many different brands to chose from at a discounted price. Dont worry about getting from the internet either because their exchange policies are great. They are very helpful.
  5. Highbeam headlights and auxiliary driving lights are not appropriate for daytime use around other vehicles. The light pattern in these lights is not designed to "mark" you in traffic it is designed to illuminate the road ahead. Driving in traffic during the day with a bunch of lights on is obnoxious and inconsiderate and it does have a negative impact on other drivers by blinding them. Because these lights have a thin "pencil beam" meant to illuminate down a long, dark road, highbeams and driving lights do not provide more visibility across a wider sweep angle, they just put more light into a small area of focus (into the eyes of an oncoming driver or into the rearview mirror directly ahead).

For better visibility to other vehicles in inclement weather (rain, snow, fog) a good set of fog lights would be appropriate to help people see you, they can also help augment the low beam if aimed correctly (with the cut-off low enough). The constituency that does care is the local police, who may give you a ticket for improper equipment use.

Other passive safety measures to increase your visibility, such as wearing a high-vis green, yellow or orange jacket, having retroreflective surfaces on your gear and a white or brightly colored helmet will improve your daytime visibility to other drivers without blinding people. For forward visibility to other drivers the best solution would be daytime running lights similar to the ones fitted to cars. These are aimed upwards (like highbeams) but have a wider beam angle and a much lower intensity light. Their only purpose is marking your vehicle to other drivers, not illumination. I have never seen this type of light offered as standard equipment or an accessory on motorcycles although it would be a good idea.

It is from difficult to impossible for the oncoming driver to look directly at you due to the brightness of the highbeams. Which is at eye level for many cars (and for short driver in suv's). Yes, people and lights are variable, but that does not change the facts and idea expressed.

Think like a non-motorcycle rider. To the Billions of people who drive but not ride, we are a non-issue. We are not soft tissue on two wheels. We are not as important to them as we are to ourselves.

The closer you get, the less they want to, or are able to, look at you. And they can only guess as to where you might be now. This guess based on where you were before MERELY WANTING to avert their eyes. When they could last accept the brightness. Highbeams are as bright during the day from the point of view of the observer.

Oh, and this is interesting. In World War II, subhunting planes put headlights (bright ones) on the leading edges of their wings to make themselve harder to see in the bright sky.

I know i am getting back ino this conversation a little late but reading this ended the rest of the posts for me. Especially the part about the police giving you a ticket for the use of the highbeams during the DAY time. I actually just took my exam for motorcycles in VA and got 1 wrong. It was this one to be exact. I marked that it "does not" increase safety to use your high beams during the day and got it wrong. The examiner told me that VA encourages the use of High beams for motorcycles during the Daytime hours. Now coming from a cop (military or not we still utilize local statutes) the only time i give a ticket for high beams is at night when driving in the presence of other vehicles. I have never even thought about stopping someone for using their high beams dring the day. Hll i couldnt even tell they were using high beams during the day.

  6. This isnt trying to spark ANOTHER debate. you all know i am new to this and i finally got bored enough to search for pictures of a First Gen. I saw a picture of someone sitting on their seat and took a picture of the controls. I swear the first thing that popped in my mind was "ground control to major tom"

  7. i agree with the driving lights. I am glad i finally found the switch for them even though i only needed to find it once (to turn them on). You wont see me with them off. The high beam is always on during the day as well. I only turn it off at night. The driving lights will help them see me but i dont want to blind them so they dont see someone else.

As for the brake lights. I am getting that flasher module so whenever i apply the brakes the brake light flashes before it goes steady to get the attention of the guy/girl behind me.

Hospitalization is free for me but i have recently developed an alergy to pain.

  8. I would not run an automotive filter on a bike that is still in warranty. If I had an engine still in warranty, I would only run the Yamaha filter and a motorcycle oil, probably that Yamaha branded crap just to keep the service dept happy.

I personally run a Purolater PureOne PL14610 from Advance Auto on my bike and Rotella T 15W40 diesel oil. You'll be hard pressed to find a better oil and filter combo.

My bike is not in warranty so I don't have to worry about fighting with a service department when the engine decides to go south.

    flb 78,

Have you noticed a drop in your gas mileage using the Rotella oil? A couple of my Harley friends are telling me not to use the Rotella because it killed the mileage on their bikes until the oil sarting breaking down. they said they went from 38-40 mpg to lucky to get 32mpg after a frh oil change with Rotella.

I did just get back from advance auto with my PL14610 oil filter. Now i am trying to decide what oil to use. It is betwen Mobile 1 and Rotella right now. AMSOIL is just too expensive.

  9. Wow this is getting expensive. I went to advance to get a couple thing to clean the bike with. After my military discount and still $40 later i have a few things to clean the bike with. My wife is going to kill me soon. I bought the bike as a way to save money on gas to work. I am making up for that money on products to make her like aweome. I am getting away with it so far becaue i explained it isnt something i have to buy every week. Anyone else having this problem? its like a drug addiction right now.

  10. I got the midnight edition with the chrome forks to. Even with the little things wrong with it i still think i got a steal at 7500. all the others aroung here comparable, without the chrome, were almost double that price.

I found the switch thanks wkboard, it was a little black push button switch on a big black fairing. Cant for the life of me figure out why i didnt see it the first place. Thank again, Josh

  11. i just got back from iraq myself. Kuwait is considered a "safe"place so you dont carry anny ammo with you while on the Base. Yeah in kuwait it is a base not a FOB. it is Camp araf jon.

In iraq itself i couldnt leave my compound on the FOB without having at least my 9 and 1 mag. That is on the FOB itself. Outside the wire it is a full load out everytime. Good luck to all out there with you. Watch for them IED's they are really all thats left that is dangerous out there. we hit one and i will tell you it aint pretty.

  12. cool i will check there today when i get home. if i cant find the switch i will just take the lights apart and follow the wires. was hoping to not have to do that but i gotta do what i gotta do. Thanks again.

  13. yeah he didnt know where it was either. he works at a dealership where he took the bike for his girl. Shw couldnt even touch the ground when she got on it so he sold it to me. He has no idea where the switch is either. We were both looking for it. I will ge it out in the sun tomorrow nd look some more
