#2 has low compression, 65 psi. I had the valve clearence checked and adjusted on all four. Then a leakdown test pointed to the rings.

My 85 has a weak #2 cylinder. I picked up an engine from an 83 for $130.00 with the carbs. I want to do a complete rebuild of that engine and put it in the 85. The 85 runs good even with the bad cylinder but I want it to be 100%.

Check out the following link. Has anyone here used these and is that a good price for a complete set?

Look at this post from the tech library.
-

Check the compression while you have the plugs out. My 85 has a week #2 cylinder and will do over 90 mph easily in fifth gear.
-
That is really cool, great job.

My 85 had the same problem. It was the float and sending unit mounted in the tank under the seat. I got a replacement on ebay for around $30.00 with shipping. The sending unit has a fine copper wire coil in it and when the copper wire breaks it's done for.

The stock spacers are 3 7/8" long. If you had just washers and no spacers installed i would have to say you have aftermarket springs not stock springs.
-
If I remember right the spacer that came with my progressive springs was about 3 in. I cut them in half because it was too stiff with the full spacer.
-
I have the stock spacers, but you could make some from PVC pipe. When I get home tonight I can measure the length of the stock ones.

I just picked up a used engine today for $130.00. I,m going to completely go over it and use it to replace the three cylinder in my 85.

The last 2 winters I used seafoam in the gas instead of sta-bil. I have not had any problems. The bikes start right up in spring better than they did when I used sta-bil.

I have a complete trunk with a good latch and key. I can send you just the latch and key just send me a PM with your address. If anyone else is interested in the trunk let me know. It has 2 small cracks in the top cover.
-
Is this one of the parts you need? (see picture) If so send me a PM with your address.

You should also pull off the front wheel and clean and re-lubricate the speedometer worm gear. I had a bad squeak at the front wheel and thought it was the wheel bearings. The grease in the worm gear was dried up.
-
I am also fixing up my 1st Gen cassette deck, but I need one of the large buttons. If anyone has one to sell please send me a PM.
Thanks
