20lbs.???? I need to go out and buy more grease!!!!
When I broke apart the housing and greased the shaft that area was dry and clean. I will leave it this way.
Thanx everyone .

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Regular old grease it is then.
Dislike getting older...brain farts a hell of a lot more.

I may regret asking.....but here it goes. What do you all reccomend that I squirt into this zerk fitting on an 83VR.
-
Please consider an '83 Venture Royale that I have posted for sale.
I own two and I need to let one go.
This is under protest mind you...but the warden rules with an iron fist.
Should she ever mention the second one I am sure going to miss her.
(HOPE SHE DOESN'T READ THIS)
Thanx everyone...

Again for what it is worth.....I too have a '83. I called Mobil 1 direct to ask the same question about synthetic oil. Told by Mobil not to use it due to the incapatibility with the older gasket material. They stated that should I tear down the motor and replace gaskets with newer ones then I could go ahead and use synthetic.

Thanx Jeremy.....I'm so excited about the bike...my very first one so I'm overthinking it and seem to be chasing rabbits. If I'm going to speed suck it up and accept the mileage.
Thanx for all the input guys!!!! Hopefully my journey through this bike will allow me to return the favor someday.

Nothing new was going on with the bike. I did do a teardown to check and fix any encountered problems. Had the front forks off. Did the steering head, springs and oil. Rear wheel was off. Pulled the driveshaft for inspection and greased it up. Brakes all the way around. The long trip I just took was stormy. Winds encountered every day. We did spend a lot of time up around 80-90mph. Am I just fretting over nothing??? The only thing I remember doing.....gave myself a major DUH....when I reassembled everthing I used the wrong grease on the axles. I used the moly-whatever stuff that I put on the driveshaft to cut down wear. My trip was the next day so I left it alone. Hopefully not a big oops. I plan to disassemble and rectify.

Each time I dink with the carbs I check the sync. The bike is right on.
Honestly, I don't have a caliper, I did not notice that much of a difference in thickness between 3-#4s and the stock spacer. I used to average about 36 - 38mpg and it has dropped to a solid 33mpg. At the higher mpg the bike had new plugs and ignition wires. Still does. Ah my journey continues.
So am I to understand that the diaphrams, with no holes, should be good to go?
And of course, possibly, go back to the stock set up?
I believe the bike should do better than 33mpg. Any more ideas guys & gals?

Okay, so last night I tore back into it and added the third washer. If I had thourghly read you Randy I could have saved myself some time. The third one was the ticket.
Need to ask...My low end is back but I still have a bit of a bobble starting out. New development for this bike. Has power but stumbles a bit. Could krinkled diaphgrams, hole free though, cause this. I will be replacing them just not right away.
3 #4 washers installed
Pilot screw 2.5 turns out
Idle set at about 1000rpm
Carbs sync'd

Thanx...I believe I will add another washer...unless someone has another idea. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow with the third washer.

Okay...so last night I did the needle shim mod. Used two #4 S.S. washers in place of the stock plastic one. Found out that I need to replace my diaphragms at some point...kind of krinkled but hole free. I first reset the idle mixture screws 2 1/2 turns out. Then I did the mod and reset idle to about 1000rpm. I then moved on to sync the carbs. All went well. This morning though on the way to work I now have a hesitation when throttling from 1000-2500rpm. At about 2500 it pins me when the gas catches up. I seem to be starving the motor a bit. May it be as simple as adding one more washer or should I play with the other adjustments. What do ya all think?

That is cool. Damn I love this bike. Thanks for the explanation.

I haven't pulled the rear tire yet but at 55 mph I am at 4050 rpm.....just a little tidbit before I pull the tire. It will be next week.
-
I will give it a little more time. Just got back from a trip that added 500 miles to the springs. They'r not too stiff....I mean not unbearable. Thanks for the info...

Thanks for the info Skydoc. Be about a week before I can tear into it. When I do I will let you all know what I find out.

I recently replaced my fork brace with a Bob Meyers one. Wow....I can not reccomend Bob's brace enough. Handling is tight. Follow the advice above and get one. NOW!!!!!!!!
Also replaced the springs at the same time. Wow, wow and double wow. Enough said. Oem bad, bad, bad.....I decided to try 15wt oil. I seem to be a little stiff and ocassionaly bounce a bit at low speed. I run zero air in the forks and 35psi in the rear. I did use the 3/4 spacer. I believe the simple fix would be to go back to 10wt oil. What do ya think?

If you are just looking for a radio antenna I used a hidden one from this company.
http://www.ecshylites.com/page/page/761353.htm
Windy where I am at and the mount for the antenna kept ripping holes in my half cover. I used their TTC2 model and it worked out great. Snaked the antenna just under the rear of the dash. Zipped tied the ends to the frame for the fairing and had just enough lenght to reach the plugin on the radio, I had to poke it through a few places to get the shortest path to the radio. I also had to drill an access hole through the plastic. I work for the military in the middle of a desert and had shoddy reception on my way to work with the oem pole. Now I get reception in quite a few more places and almost no static.Very happy with the new antenna. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry if I am repeating what has already been answered but after reading the first post my body is tingling and I have one hell of a devilish grin.
This will fit an 83...yes?
So.....better hole shot.....little more rpms.....and will not hurt the top end?
A buddy has an FJR and spends time at 150 on long, straight, deserted roads in the desert. Would I now be able to spend time with him.....hmmmmm?
My bike runs strong. Great pull and acceleration to 120 and buried. Think I could see a improvement?

The name Big Tom sounds okay....but the name Spanky kind of worries me. If they come as a pair I think I'll pass.

Thanks Freebird. The bearings are in good shape, just dry. And I do want to ride. Feeling like my shoulders have a devil and an angel perched.
-
Thanks for waying in everybody. Job is just going to have to take longer. Bearings and races.....I know, Iknow.....do it right. Back to the parts counter and shop I go. Dang it!
Even with the hassles....I love this bike!

So am I stuck with going to a shop to have taken off and pressed back on?
