  1. OK, so I am in the mist of my rebuild I have hit 2 road blocks, I am really hoping someone can point in the correct direction. 2000 venture btw.

    1) I have moved things around enough that I have lost track of which ignition coil is for the left and right side on the front of the motor. My coil sit on the back bone, one above and slightly aft, the other below slightly forward. I am thinking the one on top is for the left cylinder. Please let me know if you know.

    2) I am having trouble identifying the oil for the transmission, some of this may because I am used to using different terminology than the service manual. I am seeing 2 different things. One is that the final drive use an SAE 80 gear but if I am looking at this right, that is the hub/differential for the rear wheel. I am also seeing the area in question being called the middle drive. I read that this uses the same oil as the motor. Does that mean oil from the motor is being pumped to the transmission? With a separate fill cap behind the chrome cover with the oil fill cap, I am guessing I need to place oil in the transmission, but what kind? Oil is currently in the motor and the second cover on the left is off and no oil is coming out.

    Thanks in advance

  2. I am not 100% sure which variant it came out of. I am guessing it is just out of a royal star. If spending some time in the garage, I found that the heads just wont work from the new motor. The intake boots are both smaller and the wrong angles. The bolt pattern is different and I can not swap the boots. I decide to just swap the heads, so I will use the original cams and hopefully there will not be much of a power change. I pulled the entire AIS off and pluged the ports on the head. Not sure what those ports are made off but they are hard.

So I have the heads on and I have noticed that there is not enough slack in the timing chains to slip the chain over both cam sprockets. I am guessing I need to take one of the sprockets off a cam shaft. If there is any advice to be shared, I be happy to hear it.

  3. Recently I was given a 2000 Venture for helping a friend move, catch is, there is a hole in the top of block behind the left rear cylinder. I get it home, make a quick table and put the bike on it and begin to pull the motor. I drain the oil and only coolant comes out. After talking with a dealer who informed me that any engine from a royal star of a given age will make a great motor to swap. I go to ebay and find a 96-00 royal star motor. It showed up today and I noticed one thing. My bad  motor has a hose connection at the top of every exhaust manifold. The replacement does not. I spent some time here and believe this is part of the AIS system? So, what I would like to do is verify that yes, this is the AIS system, and that it is ok to use the replacement motor without out the AIS system and not switch out the heads. If I can do this, can  completely delete all of the components, hoses and diaphragms, from the AIS system or is there something else also running off those components that I do see?

Thanks FreeBird and Papa Fred for the two posts I found to help to get to this point
